2 in 1 Laptop Suggestions to Replace Laptop & Tablet - Budget $2,000

Hi All,

I'm wanting to replace both my laptop and tablet and was considering getting a 2 in 1.

It's mainly for portability. My tablet is roughly 5 years old and mainly used for web browsing and streaming, have a couple of games on it but nothing real intensive. My laptop is pushing 10 years and gets the occasional use, mainly for web browsing and e-mails.

Budget could go up to $2,000, but less is better. Hoping to keep this device for a while so wanting it to be future proof.

Some things that I would like to have (or better):
* i5 or equivalent,
* Up to 15" screen size
* 256 GB SSD / 16 GB RAM
* Detachable screen or fully rotatable
I am not very techy so let me know if there are other specs I should be considering too (graphics etc).

Currently looking at:
* Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (Ryzen 5, 13", 256/16GB), $1,798
* Dell Inspiron 15 2-in-1 Laptop (Intel i7, 15" 512/16GB), $1,622
* Lenovo Yoga Slim (Intel i7, 13", 512/16GB), $1,529

Is it worth while going down this path or should I just need looking at a tablet? Open to other suggestions too.

Thanks all in advance!

  • What sort of games are you playing? If nothing too intensive, I would just get an iPad/Pro

  • Thanks, I have never used Apple before so didn't consider it originally. Will do some comparisons and decide if I want to make the switch.

  • +2

    As someone who works in a computer repairs shop, avoid 2-in-1 devices if you can. They're so much more fragile, and when they do break, it's so much more expensive to fix.

    I'd personally be putting my cash towards a separate tablet and business grade laptop (eg. Lenovo Thinkpad). Would probably be cheaper too.

    • Thanks for the insight.
      The other option I considered was the Surface Pro 8 (i5/256GB/16GB) or similar and getting keyboard attachment so it's like a laptop.
      I do like the portability of tablets and don't need a laptop. Mainly laptop for document editing or what not, but can probably do that on tablets these days. I just had the impression that laptops may have longer lives but will do some more research.

  • I've had the spectre x360 for over 5 years now. Depends on what you mean by portability.

    2 in 1s aren't tablets, they're not meant to be held like one. LG gram 14" is the lightest at just 999grams with the average 13" being around 1.3kg. The tent mode is nice if you need to stand it somewhere that can't normally fit a laptop (kitchen bench or a side table) but even holding it like a tablet in the toilet isn't practical.

    IMO getting a lighter laptop and a tablet still better.

    Android/ios tablets always come with a better speakers and screens than laptops, and their battery can run for days.

    The hinge is fine on my spectre even though I'm pretty sure this was a refurb or return model when I bought it cheap on ebay.

    • Thanks for your response.
      I didn't consider the weight originally but now going towards the SP8 to use mainly as a tablet, with the keyboard for when I need a laptop (with won't be often)

    • How’s the fan noise on the spectre?
