What's Your Preferred Vehicle Type/Shape/Class?

After reading a few comments from other users about how certain type/shape/class of vehicles "suck" and the amount of threads we get where OP is asking about what car they should buy, I have never really seen the break down of what most users actually want here.

We have our all time favorites that continually get spat out; Camry, Corolla/i30's, Tucson/Sorento, Carnival, Hilux/LDV, Mustang/86, Land Cruiser/Haval, etc etc, but it doesn't tell us what the general consensus is or what the spread is for what we would buy for ourselves.

I can look up vehicle classes sales over the past 12 months, but that only really breaks it down into 3 groups. Sedans, SUV and Commercial. I want to go a bit deeper and see what everyone's main preference is.

Let's say you are up for buying a new vehicle this year. It has to be within your budget and what you would be hoping to buy. What class/shape/type of vehicle would be the top of your list?? And if you are up for it, why do you want that class of vehicle? What appeals to you the most about your choice? (NB: I don't really care why you dont like other classes of vehicles, just why you picked the one you picked.)

  • 2 seaters. Porsche Cayman or MX5.

If I had kids. A big fast wagon or 4x4.

  • Lol I'm loving how not reflective this poll is of the Australian market.

  • Sedan or coupe. They just look better. Get a second car if you need practicality.

  • Sedan or Coupe, specifically Merc’s C Class range, C200/C300. Have one now but a few years old, suits my lifestyle. Great cars to drive, drive incredibly well and look phenomenal. They’re not for everyone of course - no babies allowed in the Benz!

Octavia RS wagon of course -
Fun to drive, spacious boot, modern features/engine, etc

  • I'm 21 and love sedans. I don't think I'm d enough to love "Family cars" like SUVs, station wagons, 4x4s etc. Has to be rear wheel drive and make 'enough' power. So cars like v6 camrys, falcons and commodores are my go you. Currently drive a 2008 Ford G6E (boomer car i know but the xr6s were 50% more expensive when
I purchased my car) and love it, does it have its flaws? Yes of course, but the engine will outlive me, it's dirt cheap and the value will pretty much only go up. I really can't see myself driving a hot hatch in the near future, as well as the aforementioned family cars but I'm not against them, they have their place.

    • Mate, the G6E has everything the XR6 doesn't. An XR6 may cost more but hop inside one and you can immediately tell it isn't 'worth' more.

      • I've never been in one, but from a specification standpoint the suspension should be more "sporty" and stiffer, the G6E sometimes feels like a boat going around corners. But the G6E is still an extremely luxurious experience 14 years on.

As long as it's a high yield investment

  • No option for Sedan on stilts.

  • One that is not ridiculously overpriced like most of them

~2007 era subarus with turbos do it for me. Liberty GT and Forester XT. There are sportier sports cars, and better econoboxes and 4wds, but no sports car can come close to their versatility, and no off-roader or econobox can come close to their performance, especially with some cheap and light modifications. The forester is a great example of a car that can support two entirely different groups of enthusiasts: there is a community who lift them to go offroad, and an entirely separate community who lower them to make road-focused weapons out of them (platform/engine largely shared with the WRX of that era). How many other cars can claim that?

Some might find the fuel consumption high by modern standards, but the purchase price is low and it's something you trade off for AWD, worth it all things considered unless you are doing more driving than average.

      Liberty GT, wonderful!!

  • If I had only one car to own, a compact/medium sized SUV with decent sporty performance. This kind of car needs to have the ability to like accelerate/overtake with relative ease, decent ground clearance so I do not worry too much about speed humps/car park humps and the convenience of an SUV body. An example that might tempt me; Audi SQ5 / Macan; a more (financially) sensible option would be something like a Mazda CX5 with 2.5l turbo petrol.

4x4 Wagon, because 4WDing, and dual cabs are overrated.

Otherwise sedan. Had a number of them over the years.

    Polls suck

What's with all the "I need a SUV to place a baby into the car"?

Typically most parents are in their late 20s early 30s, if you're having trouble at that age, things don't look good for you when your older.

FWIW, I prefer large Sedans and for a period had 2 car seats and a booster in a sedan, not a problem what so ever.

Edit: If I where to go an SUV, it would be a midsize version, something akin to a 2.5l Turbo Mazda CX-5.

    • +1

I think the honest answer is that it's much harder to accidently leave the baby on the roof and drive off with an SUV.

  • +2

Surprised so many people like sedans.

    I love a luxury sedan… nice & big.. classy

SUVs are so blah and everywhere.

    • +4

SUVs and cross overs are for people who don’t like cars or consider them nothing more than a way to get from point a to point b.

  • Midsize sedan. They look the best to me and can be modified to become a street-weapon

Wagons always seem to be popular reading posts and comments online, but hardly anyone seems to buy them.

  • I've only ever had hatchbacks and station wagons, all less than 2.2L engines. I'll never have any other chassis type, I love the flexibility and fuel economy.

I currently drive a 1.8L station wagon and it's perfect for me!

I'm incredibly active and outdoorsy, and all my toys fit inside my car without the need for roofracks (including my skis/snowboard and gear) 🙂

I'll be keeping my car when I start a family too, no need to upgrade!

  • Shooting brake.

Had one of those shoot past our minivan on an Italian autostrada a few years ago… would have been doing 220km/h+. Beautiful vehicle, in a beautiful scene (sweeping motorway bridge over a valley!)

  • Other: Motorcycle

four wheels good, two wheels better

    Kei class car baby!

  • Suzuki mighty boy

  • Hatchback with the back seats removed to maximise boot space!

  • Dual cab ute with a canopy.

    So good.

  • hatchback/station wagon for practicality

  • The people mover has become my new favourite. Didnt like the thought of it at the start but the space is awesome.

Don't think I can go back to something else to haul the family, luggage and dogs.

  • 2k Barra!

  • Mustang GT convertible. You did not list verts.

Looks and goes like true American muscle car. Sounds like one too.
