BenQ Tk850i True 4K Home Entertainment Projector $2636 ($659 off) + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

271

I've been looking this for few weeks. Previous cheaper price was in Nov, 2021 for $2695 and the cheapest at JB was in May, 2021 for $2595. I'm sure you could ask for a better price if you buy at a store.

I have a media/sitting room, not that big 3.5x3.8m. Once the blinds and sliding door is closed, the room is not pitched dark during day time but at night is clearly dark. Previous users, experts in projectors; what do you think.

I like this projector it had a good review but the cost for me at the moment is a no go… Still using a Benq w whatever it is… 1080p which has been good for streaming but brightness could be better.

As for your room I have no door on one side so it gets a bit of light on but found this years ago and bought it, from NZ. You can get paints but this got me at the time.

    https://bit.ly/3I5iuII

Other videos on this screen in daylight too. I think it’ll feel too small in your room. I have 4*7m room and use half for the “cinema” so the back of it is used as study. But not having the wall at 3.5m feels great to have the couch in. Probably sit about 3.5m from screen.

    • Cheers for the tip mate.

"The TK850i uses a 0.47” DMD DLP projector that creates a 4K image through the use of pixel shifting. Pixel shifting uses a native resolution 1920×1080 sensor to fire the same pixel four times, shifting where it hits the screen slightly each time, to create a total of 8.3 million distinct pixels on the screen."

    True 4k my a*se.

    • In project world. As long as it can do pixel shift for 8.3 million pixels. It's called true 4k. No sure if it can take 4k signal tho.

      • +3

Marketing speak designed to pull the wool over people's eyes. A 3840x2160 pixel grid is the minimum required for anything to be "true" 4k.

        • +1

If it was 240hz and shifted 4x would that be true 4k

          • +1

@Azif: This is basically exactly what pixel shifting does 👍

        • +3

@thatguyfromthatplace This does create a 3840x2160 pixel grid, as per the very description that you just quoted above !

Pixel shifting uses a native resolution 1920×1080 sensor to fire the same pixel four times, shifting where it hits the screen slightly each time, to create a total of 8.3 million distinct pixels on the screen."

          • @Nom: No, it doesn't. It creates a 1920x1080 grid which it shifts around to try and pretend that it has more pixels than it does. Seeing as how it can't do that at the speed of light, guess what? You will never have 3840x2160 simultaneous pixels, hence it's not 4k.

            • @thatguyfromthatplace: These are the kind of guys who buy an MR2 and put the Ferrari fibreglass kit on it.

            • +1

              @thatguyfromthatplace:

Seeing as how it can't do that at the speed of light

It doesn't need to go at the speed of light, it just needs to go faster than your eyes can perceive.
This is a pretty fundamental misunderstanding about how the pixel shift technology works 🤷🏼‍♂️

Why are you so against it ? Do you prefer 1080p projectors ?

              • +1

@Nom: I prefer honesty to deception. Wobulated 1080p is not 4k. It will never be 4k. It is incapable of being 4k.

            • +1

@thatguyfromthatplace: Don't understand why this is being downvoted, this person is right, if you call it "true 4K" it should be 4K pixels simultaneously. There isn't an issue with calling it a 4K projector, but accurate information would be 4K via pixel shift or something, people shouldn't defend marketing that is obfuscates the truth or that is deceptive (I think this is more obfuscation than deception).

    • Came here to check if it was full 4K or just marketing bs. Thanks for saving me the time

      • +3

Pixel shifting is categorically not "marketing bs" - see post just above from thatguyfromthatplace that explains how it works.
You do get a complete distinct set of 4K pixels on the screen 👍

        • Sounds like you guys bought one and are trying to convince yourselves

          • +2

            @captaincabinets: No, I have a 1080p projector.

When it finally dies, I'll replace it with a 4K pixel-shift model.

      • You're welcome.

    • +8

      What a load of rubbish.

As long as there are 3840x2160 pixels in the image, what does it matter how they get there?

Google it and have a read of what professional projector reviewers say about pixel shifting: image quality of 4k from pixel shifting is close to the quality of 4k from a 4k DMD, and the general consensus is it's not worth spending a lot extra for 4k DMD.

      https://www.projectorcentral.com/4k-projectors-defined.htm

      • +1

Cool, and plasma is 'close to' the quality of OLED. "True" implies that it's not 'close to' it implies equal.

        • -1

Nice false equivalence. Plasma is not OLED, 4k @ 60 fps is 4k @ 60fps though

      • There aren't, though. You get 2k here, 2k there. You never have 4k pixels at once.

      • +1

Thanks for that link. I’ve now gone down the pixel shift rabbit hole. I remember when it first came out and people poo poo’d it.

Lots of the comments here sound like they are from people who are rigid in their definitions- which is fine. I think we can appreciate the eye isn’t perfect - as evidenced by retina screens looking ‘sharper’ then other screens with higher dpi.

I’ll have to head down and check these out. Never been in the market for a projector until now.

        • +1

Most comments are from people who never used it before and think it is 1080p projector.

  • +1

I have this projector. Had a stuck pixel fixed. Now I have a slight shadow in lower right. Still waiting to get fixed.

Had the 1080p BenQ previous. The image on this thing is incredible. The brightness is huge. Whites are probably a bit too bright. Nice blacks also compared to my 1080p. Colours really pop.

    • Thanks for sharing real life experience. I always take the online reviews with a grain of salt.

  • +4

At this price, why don't you consider getting a 4k laser projector. I have just got a mi laser projector from kogan for around $2500. It is very good, short throw, with amazing sound. I guess much better than BenQ. Actually I upgrade from BenQ short throw to this.

    • +1

I had few mi products over the years. I appreciate their value for money aspect. However, my experience with many of these brands that they are very good when new. Over the time, performance is greatly diminishing in comparison to other well known brands. On the other hand you may buy two of them for the price of an established brand.

By the way, have you used the Mi? How is it?

    • what model is this? i didn't realise that 4k laser projectors had hit mid-2k!

    • To be honest the quality control of MIJIA products(not manufactured by MI) and warranty of Kogan are questionable.

  • I have the TK800 which I got as a refurb for 1200. It has amazing brightness, I really love it.

Not sure at this price point, or what this newer model is like.

  • how does this compare to the viewsonic x100 4k+ ?
i dont care too much about android built in because ill just be connecting an apple TV anyway

  • +1

I've upgraded from previous Epson 1080P to TK800M and the difference is obvious especially with 4K HDR content. Projector is good for night movie time. Why bother to go gold class while you can have at home.

  • +1

Hi OP, have you considered an 85"+ 4k tv instead as some of the non-OLED varities are at simillar price points.

    • For a small room, that would be the best option.

    • +2

I went down this way 4 years ago with a x8500e sony 75"… as tv's get bigger, so much light bleed.

My next big TV is oled or has to have local dimming - then that get's super expensive!

    • Hey smarter_fool, I actually have LG Nano 86'' in the family room, which is awesome as a tv. Family room is much bigger in size 6x4.5m, so the tv fits perfectly.

I'll like to try with a projector in the media room, but don't want to spend too much as well, like Sony projectors. Hence considering this.

      • Does it have DSE as many LG LED TV posses this?

        • +1

This is the first time I learned about DSE, I actually had to google what it means. No, not in my tv.

  • unable to do dingy pay split to 25 payments with no interest

Before rushing to this deal, study throw distance.

  • Laser projector better

    • I think they are. But, nothing in main stream brands at this price. I was looking at LG HU810; first it is double the price, second no where to find in Australia.

How about this one for $2000?

    Anker Nebula Cosmos Laser 4k

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nbl/nebula-cosmos-laser…

    • I like this! I will get this (subject to domestic approval) when the unit is launched and folks have tested a production unit to death.

  • +1

I have TK850 and it's okay but i feel lamp-based projectors are getting redundant now. Will give a try with a laser projector next time.

    • +1

I went back to lamp based projector after using an LG LED projector. Even though they say LED lasts 20000-30000 hrs etc, it faded at 2500! If bulb based you can at least replace the bulb!

  • +1

I use a projector for pretty much all my family entertainment. If i were to upgrade the most important factor I would be comparing is the noise the projector makes. Especially if you have a small room.

    • That's a good point, however, how would I know to compare, the real feeling of fan noise??

  • +1

"The HT3550 shines, no pun intended, in darker rooms and offers a perfect fit for movie fans. If you want a home cinema, then the HT3550 has been made for you. Meanwhile, our engineers and designers crafted the TK850 for brighter environments and sports fans, probably while watching a lot of basketball or football. In any case, the TK850 works best in relatively well-lit rooms and showcases high speed sports content with flying colors."

Good projector… But I got one for $1100 at Amazon…Black Friday deal

    • No way. Seriously? Must be a pricing error. their full hd versions are sold at that price.

    • Which one? Same TK850i or a different one?

      • Just checked, it was TK810, not good as TK850i technically, I bought it at $1,008.48…

  • This and the W2700 are direct replacement for W1100 and W1090. I have thought about upgrading to W2700, but gave up. I might do it if it comes down to $2000.

  • That’s very standard price .. you can negotiate at jbhifi ..

I end up buying 5700 ( refurbished one ) better machine overall for $2500

    • What is the difference between Tk, HT and W series? From my understanding Tk and HT are same but Tk has brighter lamp, so catering for a room with more background light.

      • W2700 is same as HT3550believe in US it’s HT
W5700 is overall superior machine than 850

      • Long story short: if you are planning to gaming, the tks has the new Chipset with better input lag and 240hz 1080p feature.

  • +2

The TK700STI is also on special for $2076. It's the first time I have seen it on special for 12 months.

I don't think people realise that native 4K projectors start at around $9000. Shifted-4K is the affordable option for most people!

    • Holy cr*p! That it is the true deal!!!!

  • +2

This is very much the average price…. not a deal… also it does not have as good color reproduction as the BenQ W2700i - if people are looking for recommendations I'm very impressed with the Epson EH-TW7100

    • In another hand it is wayyy brighter than w2700.

  • +1

Do not buy this one. This has the old Chipset. Check the tks700i with the much lower input lag model and 240hz 1080p feature.

  • +1

How about this project? Seems to have the same spec as the tk850i.
    https://www.justprojectors.com.au/viewsonicpx748-4k.htm?gcli…

    • This ViewSonic is brighter, better chip, 240hz, lower input lag, cheaper.

      • Wow

        • Better connection (USB type C), smaller, better adjust keystone feature, more colour wheel (8 vs 4 = less rainbow effect), lighter, newer.

Downsides: no Android tv, less remarkable brand, lack of good reviews, noiser possible.

  • I have a W2700 and am more than happy with it.
During the day I use block out blinds (less important for brighter models such as the TK850i), e.g.
    https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/trippevals-block-out-cellular-b…

If you are using a screen make sure you do your calculations:
    https://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-TK850i-projection-calc…
    or
    https://projectorcalculator.benq.com/

  • I'm good with my $138 Big W 1080 projector
