Telstra Prepaid - Coming off Simplicity - How to Maximise Value for Low Usage?

Hi all

I've been on Telstra Simplicity for years. Been waiting for a refund of around $300 from Tesltra since they turfed creditme2u, and today looks like the day it might happen (need to call someone with my BSB etc).

I just had a quick browse on Whirlpool and noticed some saying their Simplicity plans have a 10 year expiry due to some 'loophole', but couldn't find anything about what the loop hole is? Anyone know anything about it?

Simplicity worked for me as it is my backup sim for when Optus doesn't work.

Looks like the new equivalent is Telstra Prepaid Mobile Casual - $30 /6 months with a very small data (300mb), texts (100) and calls (80min) allowance.

Did see some chatter about swapping between offers and buying plus packs then swapping back so you have more data/ calls etc, but still a decent expiry.

Any tips on these processes?

Cheers

  • How is 0.3GB, 100 texts, and 80 minutes meant to last six months.

    • Not even by 2010 standard!

    • Yeah it's pretty sad. But I 'think' the play is you activate under a 28 day offer with a heap of data, buy a talk plus pack for calls, then switch over to this 6 month expiry plan and all the accumulated bonuses come across, and you have 6 months to use them. Maybe need to switch back to get more data/ talk packs over the 6 months if needed… I think.

Must be some Telstra masters out there?

      • Makes me feel foolish for just paying whatever Telstra ask. I do like not thinking about it though, and not even thinking about running out of data because I know the shaped speed will be good enough. I know I've been on hold for 80+ minutes a few times in the last few months too, not thinking about my precious minutes is a big relief.

      • Do you have a specific reason to stay with Telstra? Given global roaming, creditme2u, and a bunch of stuff is gone, and plenty of complaints about their bad customer service. For light use, and mainly for backup, maybe the other companies have more economical offerings. BTW, I asked the other day, still no date as to when prepaid global roaming will be back. Perhaps never.

        • Yeah unfortunately I drive into central Australia every few months. Some places only Telstra works, and surprisingly in some places only Optus works. I just bought a Woolies sim to try next trip, but Aldi and Boost didn't work, so not confident.

Optus is my daily phone, but the Telstra backup saved my butt once when I needed a roadside assistance call out and there was no Optus reception.

Also, (brace yourself) to get my $300 credit on my old plan (that they have terminated…ie I cant recharge it anymore, so will lose my $300 current credit), Telstra need me to buy and activate a new sim with a new number, Then they will bring the number across and then transfer $300 into my bank account. I said I will just port my number over to Woolies Mobile and send me the $$…no can do.

          • @tunzafun001: Wow, that's painful.

I ended up not bothering with a refund, so I still have lots of credit. My usage is also light, more for backup - if I need it, $10 pays for a 200MB browse pack, $20 for 700MB for 30 days.

            • @bluesky: Are you also on a Simplicity plan? and can use your credit to buy plus packs?

              • +1

@tunzafun001: No, it's a Long Life plan. Yes, I can use the credit to buy browse packs.

Woolworths Mobile uses Telstra Wholesale, so the coverage will be identical to Aldi.

Boost uses Telstra Retail, and other than no 5G, the coverage is identical to Telstra.

            • @Colin2905: Thanks for this. It was a long time ago when I tried Boost. Might need to try again.
