I would recommend looking on the used market instead. For $100, you can pickup a 10-15 year old bike that cost $1000 new and it would still perform WAY better than this junk. Department store bikes are terrible products, with the exception of the Aldi 29er (they are pretty good).

    • Nowadays 12 year old Giant/Trek entry level bikes that cost $600-800 back then are still being listed for $200-300 online, possibly with rusted drivetrains, pitted hubs, etc. Most bikes for <$100 on Gumtree/eBay/FB are either stolen, broken or random no name brands.

      • I saw a Scott Sub 20 listed on FB marketplace for $80. Could see Alex rims and hydraulic discs from zooming the picture so it was a recent model. Seller listed the model wrong etc. but had a 5 star rating and a decent suburb etc. - It was a case of seller who didn't care.

        It was sold in 15mins

  • Is this sturdy enough to do a ride around Australia over a 3month time frame

    • err…

    • +8

Yes, provided it sits in the back of a ute for 99.9% of the distance.

Any bike that has "Shimano" decal'ed on to the frame, is like the food products with the price permanently printed on the packaging. Avoid.

    • not necessarily, you need to know which groupset it is. you can find that sticker with a bike that has a claris or a dura ace di2 groupset. very different, and both have shimano stickers.

      • +2

But with named groupsets, the crank & RD will have the series labelled there and there is generally no need for the frame to have markings. I mean just "Shimano" (or "Shimano SIS") and nothing else on the chainstay. That is generally a hallmark of low-end bikes trying to product associate itself up the quality ladder.

      • Can you show me a link to one bike which backs up your claim?

dang it, i got a bad deal. i should have just bought this instead of my Merida Scultura. this bike is so much cheaper and with the money i saved i could have gotten pedals, shoes, helmet, kit, etc…

    • And boosted your private health cover! :)

Merida sculturas are good bikes tbh

      • lol
ok, i will just stick with it then. i will try to ride a lot to get my moneys worth, lol.

    • Well Sophied.

  • Opps I bought a road bike from Anarconda it cost me $399 at the time but boy I had lot of fun riding it. I even took it to the summit and ride all the way up and down the mountain until it finally broke after 10yrs of riding. I'm hesitating of getting it fix by 99 bikes because of this deal.

  • +2

Most people who are willing to buy this aren't going to ride after a few times anyway.

I've seen quite a few Kmart bikes on hard rubbish piles.

  • Bought a cheap bike from them once. Started to rust badly after one month. Gear shifter broke in less than 2 months and then the freewheel broke so I got my money back as they don t know how to fix it. Never again

  • Can anyone suggest a good bike for a 9 years old kid? I want to train my kid and also let the kid use the bike for a while.

We got one from a bike shop for about $300. Lasted a good 7ish years and 3 kids.

Probably a 24 inch bike. Might be a little on the big side but they will grow into it. There are some bikes in the Giant XTC range that are okay. My eldest is 10 and he rides a Trek multitrack ladies bike, it's black and not some girly colour so he doesn't care. Stay with the big brands like trek, Giant or specialized and you should be okay.

Try the byk bikes? Little one learnt to ride on these. Check them out on fb and gumtree. Sometimes ppl give them away for free too.

    • what is your thought on Aldi bike? Im not gonna pay more than 250 for a bike that use occasionally and kid will grow up fast and we gonna to dump that bike

      • ALDI non food items are usually pretty average.

        How old is the kid?

        • 7-10 yo

For those curious if you choose to get the assembly, the bikes aren’t assembled by any Kmart staff at all. They are assembled in store by an employee from this company

I’ve got two kmart mountain bikes. One for the son and one for the wife. Both are heavier than a more expensive one from a bike store but I’ve yet to have any serious issues. I put the wife’s one together and have tightened up the son’s screws but they’ve been solid over a few rides. The son rides it to school almost every day and we’ve ridden it to a park about 3k away and back.

  • I've bought one of these BSOs* before when I needed cheap transport quickly to get to a new job. Never again.
