I have a BGTECH 55" TV that doesn't have great sound so I'm after a budget sound bar not sure what to look for when buying a sound bar i.e. channels, input ports etc.
Shortlisted a few:
Sony HTS100F
JBL Bar 2.0ch Soundbar
Samsung HW-A450/XY

If you have the space maybe consider edifier r2750db ? Apparently better value than a soundbar in same price bracket. It goes on sale semi-regularly at $199.
I use the Edifier 1280DB which were recommended on here by others. The sound is great, much better than the TV, but gotta use a seperate remote to control the volume.
Even though I paid $160, it pains me to say I've seen it regularly on sale here for around $100.
This is a good price for a mid range soundbar and sub woofer. I was able to negotiate the price down to $275 delivered
