Can The Good Guys eGift Cards Be Combined Similar to JB Hi-Fi eGift Cards?

Hi,
Knowing that The Good Guys have a 2 Gift Card limit online, is it possible to combine individual eGift Cards into one, similar to how JBHiFi eGift Cards can be combined?
TIA

No - can't do it on their website.

Can probably do it over the phone, if you find a friendly staff member.

    • Their general 1300 942 765 is saying that it's only for sales, so not sure if I want to contact them to ask this. Why they don't have a chat option on their website for these types of queries is beyond me?

so not sure if I want to contact them to ask this

What do you have to lose? If you don't like the answer HUCA (hang up, call again).

Why they don't have a chat option on their website for these types of queries is beyond me?

Personally, I like your chances over the phone better than live chat. This would give you a chance to explain to them, that you could buy something over the phone and then return it immediately, so you finish up with a single gift card with a combined value.

A more pertinent question is why they still maintain 2 brands (JB Hifi vs Good Guys). Surely there's some cost savings in synergies to be realized by combining them, especially at locations where they have both stores next to each other (eg Artarmon, Alexandria, etc).

similar to how JBHiFi eGift Cards can be combined?

You cannot use JB Hi-Fi gift cards to purchase other JB Hi-Fi gift cards. (That’s clause 13 in the JB Hi-Fi gift card terms and conditions.) You haven’t been able to do that online for nearly a year, and I’ve also asked staff at a JB Hi-Fi store within the last few months whether they could do that, and they said “no, that’s against our terms and conditions”.

I checked TGG’s gift card terms and conditions, and the official answer is no:

A Gift Card cannot be used to purchase another Gift Card or eGift Card.

I still think it is worth calling or going in-store (if you live near one) to see whether they can either consolidate multiple TGG gift cards into one or devise a way for you to get around the two gift card limit you’re seemingly trying to get around. If you explain the situation to the sales team (particularly over the phone), they may be able to come with a way for you to redeem more than two TGG gift cards in one online or over-the-phone transaction. To be fair, there is no known limit for the number of TGG gift cards you can redeem in-store, so if you go to a TGG store and ask to consolidate TGG gift cards, staff may not initially understand why you want to do that.

    • This is an absoloute disgrace. I've been so boned by this tonight and I can definitely say I won't be going anywhere NEAR a "TCN Card" deal again.

What use is 3x$50 or even 3$100 cards if you can't redeem more than 2?
Having to make phone calls (at 11pm at night, which isn't viable or an option) is no good.

Really want to get rid of $850 of this junk now.

  • So why have I previously been able to add individual JBHiFi eGiftCards to make it up to a higher total (max. $500)?

Because JB Hi-Fi used to allow that. I remember consolidating JB Hi-Fi gift cards through their website years ago.

However, IIRC, JB Hi-Fi stopped allowing this after a lot of people were purchasing TCN gift cards at Coles for a 15% discount in late 2020, going into a JB Hi-Fi store and using them to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards and then going onto the website to consolidate multiple small-denomination JB Hi-Fi gift cards into $500 JB Hi-Fi gift cards. A lot of people were doing this, because:

      • JB Hi-Fi at the time only allowed you to redeem five JB Hi-Fi gift cards in one online transaction on their website, and
      • JB Hi-Fi initially placed restrictions on TCN gift cards, where you could only redeem up to $500 of TCN gift cards in one transaction at JB Hi-Fi.

However, from a fraud or money-laundering perspective, allowing the consolidation of gift cards is a nightmare, because it becomes more complicated to trace where funds originally came from and where they went if gift cards have been consolidated multiple times. Considering how popular the aforementioned TCN deal was and the (probable) spike in money being spent on JB Hi-Fi gift cards, I think JB Hi-Fi’s head office determined it was too risky to continue allowing the consolidation of JB Hi-Fi gift cards.

JB Hi-Fi also a while ago removed the limit for the number of gift cards you can redeem on their online store, so there isn’t as much of a pressing need to consolidate JB Hi-Fi gift cards these days.

You’ll be hard-pressed these days to find a retailer that will happily let you consolidate gift cards issued by the retailer. The only example I can think of is David Jones.

Thanks again for your informative posts on this.

I'm absoloutely stuffed redeeming my TCN cards to TGG, stuck with cards for an idiot store I never go to. I'm really, really pissed off.

  • Just phone in your order and pay instore if you want to collate all your payment types.

Website is limited, staff are not - explain that you've got a handful of GCs to use up and they can help.

    • Spoke to staff at one of their stores. The complicating factor is that there are 6 Gift Cards, 2 TGG eGift Cards (from Suncorp), 2 x $100 The Ultimate gift for Home and 2 x $50 TCN Home. The TCN and The Ultimate can both be converted from Physical into eGift Cards, but after emailing TCN, the response I got back was TGG eGift Cards could only be used online (although TGG staff member suggested they should work instore). I live in a regional town and I'm trying to help my parents who live in the city to benefit from these without having to drive all the way just to deliver them. Trying to avoid getting stuck with $300 worth of converted TGG eGiftCards that can't be used instore.

      • after emailing TCN, the response I got back was TGG eGift Cards could only be used online

That is absolute rubbish. TGG eGift Cards can be used in-store.

        • I once used 5x TGG eGift Cards in-store to pay for a fridge.
        • In the last couple of months, I used 1x TGG eGift Card to partially pay for an item in-store at TGG.

Btw, it says on the gift card terms and conditions page I linked to you before:

Gift Cards are only redeemable within any The Good Guys Store and the online retail store: www.thegoodguys.com.au.

        • Thanks for this info. I thought it sounded suss, but I imagine I just ended up getting the first person who read my online query and their response was written from a script. Just need to be 100% convinced, a TCN Home Card converted to a TGG eGift Card on their website can be used instore at any The Good Guys location?

@savemore: At the moment, yes. (I say at the moment, because I’m fairly sure TGG opted out of the gift card exchange facility on the TCN website for about a month around Black Friday last year.)

            • Go to the TCN webpage for the Home gift card.
            • Scroll down to the How To Use section.
            • Select The Good Guys from the dropdown list.
            • Select the Online button to the right of the dropdown list.
            • Select the Proceed button.
            • Follow the prompts on the next page.
        • What tips do you have for someone stuck with about 10 or 12 cards?

Can I confirm you've said there's NO limit with JB anymore? or there's a 5 limit?
          Won't be using TGG again.

          • @hamwhisperer: I swear you’re dredging up all my old comments now!!

JB Hi-Fi removed the limit on the number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards you can redeem on their website about a year ago.

You can always confirm this by calling JB Hi-Fi.

@WookieMonster: Thank so much. Clearly I messed up.

            • @WookieMonster: Wookie thanks for all the help and putting up with my whining.

Good guys helped me out. But it sucks I had to do it and for future good guys deals, same situation.

I now have an850 dollar card but what if they have an item for 1500 on an amazing deal? Best I can do is use my 850 card and a 100, meaning that 550 dollars of gift cards can't be used.

              Definitely with keeping in mind.

              • @hamwhisperer: Good to hear they helped you out!

Yep, that's right… unless you go through the ordeal process of consolidating multiple TCN gift cards or TGG gift cards into one TGG gift card again.

                • @WookieMonster: Wait can you consildate at the TCN point, before the good guys point?

If so, can that be done online and easily?

                  • @hamwhisperer: No, I was only referring to the fact that you can use multiple TCN gift cards to purchase one TGG gift card at a TGG store.

                    • @WookieMonster: Oh I see, gotcha. Yeah physically going to the store, to make them "usable" really, really sucks. It totally kills the value of quickly getting a last minute deal.

I'm now stuck with $1250JB Credit.
                      $850 Good Guys credit
About $500 left of TCN credit.

                      Just a total mess!

Oh I did the figures, I would've paid $570 ($570!!!) for a DJI Mini 2 Drone, with Fly More combo kit.

                      Not happy, at ALL.
It's over now, lesson learnt. - Next you post a TCN deal btw, put a note against the Good Guys part, that they only accept 2 cards at a time online. Real killer move that.
