Studio monitors want to use balanced cables.

So I have some studio monitors on my pc connected to the Motherboard via rca to 3.5mm

I want to connect these via balanced trs cables so am after advice of what to get.

Should I get soemthing like the behringer umc22 and be done. I don't care for any sort of inputs as I don't produce music, it's really just to get less noise and better sound from the speakers.

I also have a usb mic. Will this cause issues with a usb interface? Obviously the mic won't go through the interface.

Is there another option than an interface? External sound cards don't seem to have trs ports.

Can you please clarify this part? Are you experiencing ground hum?

    • Yeah just a fair bit of ground noise when gaming. I bought a noise isolating box thing which seems to work.

But I assume going balanced trs to own interface its is always going to be better than running rca into the Motherboard. Then I can ditch the isolating box

I mean could be wrong. I have no idea about audio lol.

Surely balanced trs would sound better?

It's not always the cause, but you often have interference with motherboards that lack some sort of shielding for the audio systems. A cheap fix is often getting a sound card. Dealing with it occasionally requires a lot of problem solving. Next common fix is to replace the motherboard with model with better shielding (usually more expensive but can still happen with an expensive mb).

Sound card does not fix that problem, anything connected to the power supply can cause the same issue.

  • Yes, a USB audio interface is the best option to get good quality balanced outputs from your computer, especially to eliminate ground noise. The UMC22 is probably the cheapest box around to do the job, but by all reports is a good unit. (Currently $92 at DJ City, for example.)

Just one feature to look for - do you want separate headphone and speaker controls on the interface? It can be a great convenience to be able to independently turn the speakers down and headphones up when required, without having to muck about with software audio settings, or physically turning the speakers down/off.

The next model up, the Behringer UMC2020HD, is on sale for $129 at SoundsEasy, and offers seperate headphone fader, plus an extra input. That headphone control is well worth an extra $37, IMO.

    • Cheers for the reply.

The independent volume doesn't really bother me, I already change outputs now so it should be fine

Grabbed the umc22 for 69 on amazon. Worst case I'll just sell it if it does nothing

  • Great price! Can't go wrong.
