(PSA... Maybe) P**Wall XPI No Longer Work With The Australian/Herald Sun

Without being too obvious, I am finding this morning while opening The Australian and Herald Sun website, I was given the rude awakening of begging bowl being served in front of me.

I thought my mobile XPI was corrupted so I attempted to reinstall but to my surprise, Firefox has disabled XPI sideload and funnily enough even though I was using an old version of Firefox, it doesn't recognize the XPI. It's an eye opener to me. Anywhoo….

Investigation so far revealed it is the websites that are now one step ahead than the XPIs. I know this because I was given the begging bowl in both my desktop and mobile version of Firefox.

Are you finding the same issues as I am? Is the fun truly over? It is very interesting they finally caught up on Australia Day lol. I know because I was still enjoying the fun yesterday.

Cheers

give this a try: https://github.com/iamadamdev/bypass-paywalls-chrome/blob/ma… - still works for me

I had been using this one but it stopped working: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bypass-paywal… (alhough I've just read that the one above uses google analytics and the clean one doesn't, so just switched back to test to see if clean one works again)

    "sideload" What do you expect….

cut and paste link into https://www.printfriendly.com/

    example

    https://www.smh.com.au/sport/tennis/truly-unbelievable-tsits…

    paywall

cut and paste that url into the website given above

    https://www.printfriendly.com/p/g/b9kFvb

    no pay wall

    • Thanks. Positive for TheAge/SMH but negative for HS/TheAustralian ("Ack! Print technology timed-out while trying to connect to this page")

      Must be different technology.

      • ah my bad, i thought it was a master key for all paywalls :C

  • or try putting 12ft.io/ in in front of the url you are trying to access.

  • Okay. So far I have found some works as normal (no wall).

    Example: https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/victoria-uni-to-s…

    But for some, wall activates.

    https://www.heraldsun.com.au/subscribe/news/1/?sourceCode=HS…

I am noticing within the URL there is a mode = premium and I am guessing this is the one that cannot be 12ft.io-ed or printfriendlied.

When using the old trick, this is the URL looks like
    https://www.heraldsun.com.au/subscribe/news/1/?sourceCode=HS…

Looking forward for anyone to research the "premium" code update to be looked into.

As a side note, I don't think you're missing out much by not being able to access the Herald Sun/The Australian :)

    • Covid news are not restricted on Herald Sun website.

It's possible to post this as an "Issue" on the developer's GitHub page…. there are a few steps to take first to check it out which I don't have time to do for a few days. So if someone feels inclined please go ahead….!! Not complicated

    https://github.com/iamadamdev/bypass-paywalls-chrome

Just scroll to bottom of main page for "New Site Requests"/"Troubleshooting" and after performing these checks it can be reported as a New Issue….. and hopefully solved!

Using archive.md to bypass paywall. Everything else gives me no cookies. Have to wait abit for archive.md to cache the site but at least you can access the article. Takes roughly 30 seconds before I can read the articles. Worked for courier mail, gold coast bulletin etc. If anyone finds a better work around that'd be great! Changed android browser specifically to bypass pay firewall. Going back to Samsung browser …

    • FYI. Up until 8/2/22, the archive.md was working but today both HS/TheAustralian (I am convinced both are using the same engine) are not working.

It came back with "Not Found (yet?)" error.

  • This sucks, bloody Murdoch press

OK folks everything is up and running again, use this link to bypass paywalls for the Australian, Courier Mail, West Australian, in other words the Murdoch press

    https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clea…

I also had bypass paywall from same site running at same time, it interfered with the link above, removed it and voila^ !! everything is back to normal

    enjoy !

    • You are the man!

    • Does this only work on desktop?

    • FYI - not working for herald sun as at 8th Feb.
I note that Herald Sun is NOT listed as one of the sites it claims to handle. So not a bug, just letting others know.

    • Good stuff man!

  • Any ideas on how to add any of these amazing extensions on iPhone’s browser/s?

  • No idea,not an apple person…sorry

  • Still not working for heraldsun.com.au?

      • thanks for your reply, but still no good… :(

        • Update:

I got one of the HS article to work (tested vanilla with Paywall activated first so it's not a free or non-premium article).
Copy the whole original URL and paste it into Firefox in Private mode already loaded with the gitlab stuff.
          It should work.

Nothing is working for me. Hopefully someone will come up with a workaround.

    • This is what worked for me for PC Desktop.

I used Firefox. If you already had the old Paywall Bypass or something like that, disable it. Obtain this extension (see above). Install Ublock Origin as well. Get these two extensions available in private mode too.

Once you have done this, grab the URL and paste it into your Firefox Private. It should work both HS/TheOz.

Still hoping for 12 ft ladder as it was the easiest

  • Anybody got any updates regarding this issue…. Still getting blocked with HS/DT etc despite trying everything suggested above…

  • +1

    Just tried in Chrome https://github.com/qnoum/bypass-paywalls-chrome-clean-magnol…
    Also using ublock

    Heraldsun is working.

Anyone know how safe these plugins are? At the moment I don't dare to use this plugin in my main browser
