Is it based on a true story?

    • +3

David Gregory Roberts calls “Shantaram” a novel, but it is strongly autobiographical

        Thanks…

I might wait for the TV series…

        • funny enough, they've been attempting to make this novel into a tv series

Think the TV series adaptation was being filmed in Melbourne

    • in Melbourne? isnt this an indian drama in Bombay?

Really enjoyed the book. That said, there’s been plenty of commentary from the family that took care of him and others saying he took advantage of others and wasn’t nearly as kind/noble as he claims to be. Consider it fiction (“inspired by true events”) and it’s a good read.

    • Funny that. When I read it the first time I thought he was a bit self loving and didn’t really believe that it was as true as made out to be. Still not a bad story though

    One of my favourite books.

Couldn't get through the sequel though, anyone else the same? Should I perservere?

    • Same, the sequel was interminable and I couldn't finish it.

    • I didn't know there was a sequel!

Shantaram was my travel companion on long flights, loved the book!

I finished it but nowhere near as good

    Fantastic read.

  • Forget if it is true or not.
Some powerful examples of language that speaks to you makes it worth reading for that alone.
