Buying Strategy for Samsung Flagship

I am going to buy a Samsung S22 ultra this year, and with family change-overs and hand-downs need to do this in the next few months. I understand that the phone will be released on 9 Feb and can be ordered then and I will get Samsung care for free.

Are there better buying options I could be looking at for purchasing outright at, or soon after launch?

Samsung phones drop in price rapidly. Expect some discount offer a month later.

  • get access to the EPP, and then trade in a phone

    • I know not this EPP of which you speak.

you've been a member since 2018 and you don't know what the Samsung EPP is?? for shame

        • If it’s a phone thing, I bought my S9 as an OS grey import around then. Not a phone watcher…I refuse to feel shame for this. . 😁
So I have been forced to actually GOMA and look.
          I don’t meet the E criterion….a shame.

          • @saltypete: Likely in the same boat with my S9+, it's been a good 4 years but now it's time to upgrade.

I'm thinking the pixel will have a price reduction at the same time, so on the fence.

            • @Drakesy: It must be an S9 thing… mine is in same boat with the battery only now starting to die in the anus.

              • @pharkurnell: Mine is going fine and I’m happy with it. I’d keep it but given my sons phone has its battery going south I might as well gift him mine and upgrade.

  • There's usually Samsung buds free with pre order or initial orders.

  • They could potentially do those really good trade in programs like the ones they did with the S21. On release I'd expect some sort of freebie to go with their new phones but not any substantial savings to be had so early.

    • I am handing my existing to a family member. And there’s won’t be trade in worthy.

  • cant ya spend the extra 10 a month at telstra and upgrade at the end of each year?

so sign up for a 3 year plan + 10 per month, get a s23 next year, s24 year after?

    • Min cost $924 payment plus plan cost…And having to get a new phone each year? Never happening. I’ll definitely buy outright. I’d keep my S9 for a few more years but son needs a better phone.

      Username doesn't check out!

  • Either buy via EPP or see if you can buy a 50% off voucher for Samsung flagships which are sold through the classifieds each release, making it even cheaper.

    • Yes, I’ll look into this.

      • highly likely it won't be 50% off, it'll likely be 30-35% off the RRP of the device

        • Incorrect, there are 50% vouchers available every year. It just depends on your affiliation with Samsung. You can easily search the classifieds for past listings to see them available from the new phones to even the galaxy buds pro.

Do you really need the latest and greatest?

You can get previous year flagship Android phones for less than $700 on sale. 90% of the performance for half the cost.

    • A good point. I am attracted to some of the s22 ultra goodies but can’t honestly say I need them. I’ll only buy once every 5 years or so, so willing to pay the extra for the newest, even though the current model is probably fine. Want to buy wisely as an OzBargainer though.

the trade in bonus deals are pretty good value. If you don't send back the phone you just get charged the trade in amount and the admin fee but you still end up with a new phone for a good price and get to keep your old phone as well.

For those that have Samsung EPP, they sent out this offer a couple of days ago to register for the Galaxy Unpacked event to get the Samsung Care+ (valued at $249) as an exclusive offer. It's a phone swap program allows 2 swaps over 2 years ($149 each swap).

Thank you for that! I have signed up for the Samsung Care deal offer for the early purchase, but I thought it was a damaged phone insurance. It is, but I didn’t realise that I could use this to get a new handset two years down the track for $149. As a longer term holder this is quite valuable to me. 👍

Beware though, as Samsung Care + mentions new or refurbished phone in the T&C.

  • I suspect that stock will be hard to get early on like with the Fold 3 and Flip 3
