Looking for Credit Card with Low Annual Fee and Good Point Rewards

Hi all, need suggestions for new credit card.

Currently using Commbank Diamond Awards card which I'm going to cancel as the annual fee is $350. Was put on this card as part of the home loan package 2 years ago.

Average credit card spending is about $2k per month, reason to own credit card for points collection. Any other credit card offer good points rewards with low annual fee? Will need 2 cards on a account.

Many thanks.

    Start here

  • What points do you want?
What is your spend, local or overseas?
What do you call a low fee? What is the fee is refunded as a credit like AMEX?

    • point for cheap flight or gift cards.
      only for local use..
yea i understand AMEX does offer travel credit but from my understanding not many places accept AMEX..

Lol Commbank credit cards are seriously the worst. No one should ever have a credit card with them because their fees are high and you hardly get any benefit at all.

Amex have fee free points earning options and are more widely accepted these days so I would look there first.

If you like to travel I also suggest the Virgin Money Flyer card. The annual fee is $129 (not sure if you consider this “low”) but it’s offset with a $129 flight voucher each year.

Credit Card with Low Annual Fee and Good Point Rewards

    Pick one…….

  • Pointhacks.

  • You missed the boat.

Citi Signature for life. $0 annual fee. 1 to 1.5p per $1
HSBC Platinum. $129 annual fee rebatable on $6k spend. 1p per $1 capped at 10k points

Both are no longer available in that form. HSBC has now a fee and Citi Signature for Life is no longer available.

Which means only one card that I can think of that still does both of what you want.

Looking for Credit Card with Low Annual Fee and Good Point Rewards

Where did you last use it? It's probably still at the register.

ANZ rewards platinum (IF YOU CAN DEAL WITH ANZ's worst credit card application process)
    AMMEX Essentials Card
    Coles No annual fee Card
    Combank Low Fee Gold

All these have very little minimum spend requirement and good for starting out

  • average credit card spending is about $2k

    2k per year? month?

  • PayPal Rewards Credit Card .

    $0 Annual Fee
    0.5% return per $

    • No ApplePay and high international transaction fees though

  • I thought would use my QFF points to fly back to Sydney.

    Flight outright is $792.

    Using points is 176,000 points.

    Effectively 1 cents = 2 points.

Assuming you do not get a "signing on" bonus one would have spent around $176K to get 176,000points.

    Is my maths wrong?

    • +3

Your maths isn't wrong, but you haven't picked the best-value reward either. Look for Classic Flight rewards.

I don't know what route you're looking at, but 140-150K Qantas Points (+$600 in taxes) can get you a Business Class flight from Australia to Europe that's easily worth $4,000 or more.

So 176,000 Qantas Points for your $792 flight back to Sydney (presumably in Economy) is not good value at all.

      • $792 businesss class Nadi to Sydney

        • +2

Should be able to get that for 41,500 Qantas Points + A$135 (FJD204) with a Classic Flight Reward on Fiji Airways Business Class.
But that Business Class ticket is quite cheap comparatively, so the points 'value' won't be as high.

About 1.58 cents per point, or 1c = 0.63 points.

          • @theoracle30: Thank you - captured that. Qantas has been "experiencing some problems checking the availabilty of your trip. Try again later" for half an hour now.

Bonus points can greatly outweigh earned points depending on your spending habits. I tend to get 1 or 2 large signup deals per annum, then the points I earn on the actual spend are the icing on top.

    • Agreed. For a low $2k/ month OP is better off playing the churning game to collect points

    • How many credit cards do you hold on average? Often do you cancel them?

  • Well, how many credit cards (and debit cards) do I have?

    Credit cards
1.Westpac Altitude Black Mastercard (from the home loan package)
    2. Amex Gold (no annual fee for life with professional institution, and grab the Amex offers from time to time)
    3. Bankwest Mastercard Platinum (First CC got for int'l transaction, and no annual fee for life)
    4. ING Orange One Visa Platinum (Get the promote for $150 bonus, again no annual fee for life)

    Debit cards
    1. ING Orange Everyday Visa (Got it for the application bonus and no fee withdrawals local and international)
    2. Westpac Mastercard Debit (Just come with the savings A/C)
3.Wise Platinum Mastercard Debit (Comes with Wise)
    4. Macquarie Mastercard Platinum Debit (Got it to buy the gift cards from Marketplace)
    5. Qantas FF MC Debit (Comes with Qantas FF)
    6. Velocity FF Prepaid Visa (Comes with Velocity FF)
    7. Afterpay Mastercard (Electronic only, from Afterpay)
    8. The MYY Prepaids MC

    Well, I guess I should ask which one(s) should I cancel. <g>

  • I would check out the Mozo credit card rewards revealer

  • Merged from What's Best Credit Card to Get? (About to Move House and Buy Some Furniture. )

    Title says it all really.

I am a first timer to churning and was wondering which one is the best to start off with? I was originally looking at the HSBC deal but looks like theyve recently changed it to existing customers.

    Thanks in advance!

    • Maybe start with why you want a credit card and what features you're looking for in said card…

      • Either qantas points or cashback

      People are getting lazier…

Just do a quick ozbargain search on previous posts, this is asked probably ever 4 or 5 days or click on the financial deals tab.

      Kind regards

  • Hi Johndoe89, Did you find one? Also in a similar situation, planning to move out of CBA Platinum awards card, which I got as part of home loan package. My yearly spend is close to $20000.
