Heads up this will be on at all comic book stores (or most). The free comics are specially produced free comics that are there to advertise a particular comic. Basically expect ads.

If you want to read some real comics for free (ie not specifically produced as a freebie) check out Comixology.com. They have a heap of first issues as freebies (like the Walking Dead #1 and the Dr Who Annual for example).

    • Good point on it being at most comic book stores.

While there will of course be ads, it will mainly depend on the publisher as to how much of the free comic is made up of ads. Some free comic books are made up of the first few pages of several comics while others feature complete stories specifically created for the FCBD event. I know that Marvel has been getting some of their top creators to do each year's FCBD offering, which may or may not be due to the fact that Marvel Studios has had a movie come out not too long after FCBD for the past few years. They seem to be big on the synergy thing.

I agree that Comixology is a good place to read some free comics. That said, the comics given out at FCBD aren't necessarily any less 'real'. For the most part, you should get real stories with these FCBD offerings.

If you're out and about on Saturday, May 5 and you're near a comic book store or a book store that sells collected editions of comics (like Kinokuniya as grizz_li below mentioned) then it might be worth having a look. After all, it's free :)

By the way, while these comics are free to us, they're not free for the shops to get. They may get it cheap or whatever but they're still paying something for them. They mostly do this to promote comics and to hopefully get some new readers to come to their store.

      • No I meant the entire comic is one big ad

I'd probably pop in if I was near a comic shop but otherwise I couldn't be bother. And this is from a life long comic addict with over 24,000 books in his collection.

        • Sorry, I meant that reply for everyone, not just you. Should've posted it as a comment and not a reply to avoid confusion.

If you don't feel like going then it's all good :) Those who'll be checking it out might wanna look into Archaia Studios Press' 48 page hardcover offering. Never seen a FCBD offering go the hardcover treatment.

        • Impressive for FCBD for this issue.. might be worth checking out

    They run this every year.
Kinokuniya down the street will also have this.

That's a long and excitable post for someone who "hasn't touched a comic in years"

lol at how excited you get about the hard cover :)

…and he was just walking past the shop and got all this info…. talented

(yes I'm just trolling, I know he probably got it from the website)

      • lol nothing gets past you people does it?
Yes its on that page I linked.

I've been in there once or twice…got some weird shit in there.
I wanted a bobble head…..needless to say I was not dissapointed. Though my departing colleague who it was for..may have been.

Just makes it look like a rep. But yeah, thanks for the info :)

    Why couldn't this be posted a day or 2 before 5th May…? :-/

"Who remembers -so- far in advance?"

    • OzBargain now has a featured events thing which I think they'd put up for this.

    • So your only way of being reminded of an upcoming event is to wait for it to be posted on Ozbargain? Surely you have a phone - or a post-it.

thank you! there is another post about the free comic at Kinokuniya. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/68109

  • The Annual Sale sounds great - 20% off everything and 50% off the backissues - but yay for free comics too!

It will be everywhere, not just Kings Comics.

    kids read comics.

    • +1

      Adults read graphic novels.

      • dunno why ur comment got negged. i'll balance the force.

        • +1

          Adults read comics too!

        • I think a comic becomes a graphic novel when you are too old to say "I LOVE COMICS". If I were prime minister, I would make it a law that you are never too old to say "I LOVE COMICS". I would also make it cumpolsary to type it in caps. MODOKUN FOR PRIME MINISTER!

    • do you know the difference between a comic and graphic novel.

A graphic novel has better binding, more pages, and no adds. That's it. It's often a compilation of several comics in story arc.

There are some comics that kids shouldn't read e.g. Image and Max. Very adult content.

  • Melbourne - http://comicsrus.com.au/ Lower prices also.. USD price plus GST.

    • If that's true the NEED to have a webstore ASAP for those of us who would likely buy from them rather than the US.

      • I just got back into comics and have a few standing orders. They do Marvel and DC at USD price plus GST (as long as the dollar stays the way it is) and if you have a standing order you get 10% off on non Marvel/DC stuff. I'd recommend giving them a call and asking them if they can take an order over the phone.

Sounds like too much work. Besides these days I only buy Graphic novels. Single issues are just crap and annoying and look no where as cool on the book case.

Based on my experience, usually Kings Comics only gave 2 comics/customer/day, Kinokuniya 1, and Comic Kingdom 2. I usually went to The Phantom Zone at Chatswood because we can get each copy of FCBD comics without any limitation. Last year was the last time they did it because they closed the store not long after FCBD 2011. There is still another location at Parramatta http://www.phantomzone.com.au/stores.html

    • I had standing order no 3 at Phantom Zone Chatswood for many years. I thought they closed up years ago. Where did they move after Archer Street?

      • Nowhere. They just closed the one at Chatswood and only maintain the one at Parramatta.

    • That's quite sad for Phantom Zone.
They used to have the biggest store in Parramatta back in 1995. Then that got moved to the current small store.
Liverpool PZ closed/ changed shop to The Comic Shop.

  • i wonder if i can get the 1000th edition of Radioactive Man for free ;)

  • this is good, is there a limit for how many you get? anyone been to a previous free comic day?

    • IMO, the free comics are not worth much. It's basically a teaser sort of comics. Not your regular comic.
