Job Ideas for Former Teacher?

A friend or mine is wanting to quit teaching as her current class is horrible. Do any of you guys have ideas for other careers she could look at with the experience she has? Her pay is around 90 something and she recently got a much larger mortgage so it would be ideal if the pay wasn't less than 80 something. If it was less, then it would need a path to get higher within a year or two, not a dead end job. I have been browsing apsjobs.gov.au and have just seen administrative type jobs. But surely there is something else out there for her. Or are any of you ex-teachers and successfully transitioned out to a different but good career?

Look her up and get into business transformation (Change Manager roles are great for teachers usually). She followed similar journey and a lot of transferrable skills.

  • I've known a couple teachers that had to go back to study to change career.

  • Sales rep for educational product/service?

  • Was toying with the idea of retraining mid career but no support to retrain for primary teaching and 2 years zero income to get masters of teaching to them start again on 75k, couldn't afford it.

Shame as I'd imagine it has the potential to be a rewarding career if you can navigate the politics and stress.

OP, if your "friends" current class is horrible, surely they just need to wait 10 months, and they get a new one?

    • All the classes at this school are the same unfortunately. And there are some rules around transferring, I don't think she can move schools again for 3 years (or she gets low priority or something before then which means unlikely to get a move, I'm not sure)

Hi Quantumcat, get your friend to post here with her scenario, degree, experience, state and expertise?
I know someone who has applied for retrain scholarship within the department.
Getting paid to study, whilst less than full time pay, she did not have any dependants.

        • I'll see if I can get her to post

  • don't the classes change every year though, just stick it out and things will be different next year, also, sounds like your friend isn't demanding respect in the classroom, a good teacher should be fun, but also slightly feared and definitely respected

    • YEs, but then what if next year is just as bad, then the next, then the next…..That's why you see teachers quitting.

      • If 3 years in a row are bad, then yes, but just hating this year, i say give it a little more time, kids are just getting back to school, of course they are going to be unsettled, they are used to being at home playing Fortnite all day, Teachers need to resettle in aswell, she should give it 6 months at least, see if her outlook changes

  • How about teacher recruitment agency? Your friend would need at least 3-5 years of teaching experience and the starting salary is around $75K

  • Technical Writer….Very high demand in defense industry

  • Try TAFE., she can teach English, Uni prep courses, etc…

  • Sydney Trains track signal technician.

  • Try becoming a Tafe assessment writer.
