LOL. I just did this after reading comments from the same deal a while back, where people said their is no ID checks on making an additional card.

Eg. I C Weiner would be accepted if you're so inclined

    • +7

I added a additional cardholder a few weeks ago and required ID verification.

      • Mine didn't…it took a while for the page to "Verify ID" or what ever it said. But after a minute, it was approved.

    • +1

I remember people used to get cards in the names of their pets and then go wild on that Amex Shop Small deal topping up their opal cards. $20 top up would net you an extra $10 I think? 5 times per card = $150 of Opal travel for $100 per card. Rinsing and repeating with each card was one way of beating the commuting fees, but not the surcharge the Opal retailers would sneakily charge… but that's a different story

      • +1

        $20 for $10, not $30 for $20 i.e. spend $20, get $10 credit

        • Ah I stand corrected.. it's been a while since I had an Amex & needed Opal credit

  • there are no additional card fees to pay for up to 4 Additional Card Members

Guess this deal isn't for DJs Amex cardholders as each supp is $29/year

    • kerfuffle as you're a DJ AMEX guru, can I ask if you hold/prefer a DJ AMEX card or a DJ AMEX Platinum card? Seeing that the DJ AMEX Platinum does not attract fees for adding additional card holders, it surely is better with promos like Shop Small? But yeah the difference in annual fees ($196) may make it less attracting……

      • +4

Not Kerfuffle, but imo DJ’s Platinum is hot garbage. You’d be better off keeping the standard DJ’s card and combining it with a regular Amex card with no fee (Qantas Discovery, Amex Essential, or Virgin Escape) as they offer 4 supp cards for free.

      • +4

What @BargainGeezer said. I have a DJs Amex I don't pay for, ever (this includes supp cards). Don't get the DJs Platinum unless you really need free alterations and literally buy everything from clothes to food to alcohol at DJs.

I only use my DJs Amex at the supermarket, petrol station and DJs, unless there's another Amex offer that I can benefit from. Everything else goes onto another Amex.

        • Can I ask how you are able to get DJ Amex fee free please? I use the DJA card for petrol/groceries but I have too many Amex cards and am starting to wonder if it's at all worth it. Is it just a case of ringing to cancel and they try to retain you by giving it to you free? I didn't think Amex do that.

          • @Jinster: Targeted offer to get me off my Storecard six years ago. You can also get it for free if you work for David Jones.

    • DJ Platinum Amex has no additional cardholder fees (up to 4 Additional Cardholders). Upgrade?

What is purchase and refund protection?

    • +4

      Refund Protection:

When you buy from a merchant and have a change of mind, if you wanted to return an unused/unopened piece (as applicable) and the merchant refuses to accept the return for whatever their store policy might be. You can request the insurance for the purchase and you'll have to return the item to Amex(Chubb, their insurance partner).

      Purchase Protecton:

Ideally as per the insurance, if your recent purchase is accidentally damaged/ stolen (without a lapses on your side), they provide insurance in such instances. This particular one always came across as too good to be true insurance for me and don't know how they accept an accidental damage.

      Hope this helps

      • +3

The reason why it is 'too good to be true' is because its less likely for these events to happen within 90 days and when it does, most cardholders won't remember or be aware of the protection. If any significant amount of people were claiming it you would probably see it go real quick lol (like 28 degrees price protection!).

      • I wonder what Chubb does with all this stuff when you return it to them.

      • +1

The refund protection is rubish. Its run by chubb and they are useless

        • Would you be able to elaborate? Is the process difficult? Or do they tend to deny claims?

      • I claimed on this a while ago, bought a Garmin vivoactive 3. Watch was $449 when it first came out.. rebel had 20% off for a weekend within weeks of the watch coming out while Amex was running spend $400 get $100 back with HN. Went to HN for pricematch (bringing the watch to ~ $360), and i bought a $40 fan to reach 400 for the cashback. Effectively getting the watch for $260 (i needed the fan anyways).
Then a month later i had a tiny cosmetic damage on the screen so I lodged a claim with Amex/ chub. They asked me to send them a quote from manufacturer for repair. Because watch was so new the repair cost quoted was $250 from memory. I sent it to Amex and a week later received $200 credited back ($50 deducted as gap payment).
Net cost to me for the watch $60.
I sold it for $150 last year.

So the claim through this insurance does work.

        • when you actually requested the quote and submited to amex, must you pay upfront for the repair first? or you did you wait for amex to send you the 200$ credit back?

        • Does Payment through Paypal on the Amex card eligible for this insurance or it has to be direct on the card ?

          • @auindie: Considering that Amex won't give you Statement Credits if you pay via PayPal, I'm going to assume that it has to be directly charged.

            • +1

@kerfuffle: I've claimed AMEX smartphone screen insurance and my monthly phone bill was paid via PayPal.

  • Would the additional cardholder affect their credit score?

    • +4

No, because the liability is on the main cardholder.

  • Do they confirm in writing anywhere that making someone an additional cardholder doesn't impact their 18 month waiting period?

It'd be dumb if it did affect the waiting period, but just want to be a bit cautious here.

    • +4

I had the mrs as an additional holder to my old amex, and then she applied for the amex travel card and received all the promo points and bonuses, so I'm guessing it's fine?

  • +1

Not coming up for me. Says $20 and nothing about the other stuff

  • Do they do credit check for additional card holders?

    • A while ago I applied for additional cardholders for use during Small Shop and they had to do ID/Credit Checks, which was annoying.

    • No dude

  • Does this work for essential card?

  • +4

Not for everyone, only for those received email/notification.

  • +2

when i click on the link and log in i cant see any offer of 10k or insurance? btw ref "You can have up to 4 Additional Cards" ive got more than 4 on some accounts an still pay $0 . also tip if you already added a card holder to another account just enter their card number on application save having to do id check again. if they call up just say they are already a card holder on another account quote card number to get approved.

  • Is it only for express card holders?

    • I have Qantas premium Amex and got the offer

    • What's an express card?

  • So you can get any Amex card for free with no annual fee? What's the catch here?

    • +3

You have to already have a main card. You don't get any extra benefits on this new card except for what the main card already had.

    • yes you can. some of their card is free (no annual fee ever).

    • +1

The best card to get is the "The American Express Essential® Credit Card"
It is a simple no fee card, but the great thing is it comes with up to $500 Smartphone Screen Insurance if you use your card to pay for your phone bill etc.

Plus the random AMEX deal that gets posted on OzBargain doesn't hurt too.

      • They once gave 10K points too at one stage upon sign-up provided you spent X amount

  • Which card offers the most benefits?

  • I'm guessing I'm out of luck since I already have 4x additional cards? Can't remember why I did it, years ago now, must be for some ozb listed promo

  • Received the offer via email, applied but still need to call them up to discuss.

  • +2

Just got it done. They dont do a credit check but they do verify the person that will be listed as the additional card holder.

  • Clicking on the link for me it says:

  • Never knew these kinds of promo would occur.

I have amassed 225000 gateway points and about to leave Amex. Can’t figure out what to blow my booty on

    • You can use it to pay off balances owing

  • Is this targeted? It's not showing on my plat

  • I get the below but no 10k points… Targeting to certain card types? Qantas Ultimate No dice!

          • +1

            • @Pufff: Well since you're so confident, go and add your random card and let us know if you get the points.

  • This promotion not available for Cashback Credit Card

    • Well yeah; how do you expect to earn points on a non-points earning card?

  • +1

I was offered this when I called customer service for another issue. They asked for name, DOB, phone number and drivers license number of the supp. I gave them name, DOB and my phone number, no drivers licence number was required.

  • Has anyone received the bonus points? I signed up a family member on 8 Feb (she hasn’t activated the card yet) and I’m still waiting. I have called twice and I’ve been told to wait a few weeks. Just wondering if she is required to activate - there was no mention of this in the T&Cs. Or did I overlook it?

  • Signed up on the 10 Feb. Haven't received anything yet.
