[QLD] Free CBD & Surrounds Street Metered Parking @ Brisbane City Council Area

1490

Update March 1st: Due to the recent floods this has been extended for at least the next few weeks.

To help support local business, Brisbane City Council is turning off all metered parking for the rest of February.

Applies to Brisbane's 7869 metered parking spaces, which are mostly in inner-city areas. You'll still need to abide by parking time limits; however, you can ignore the meter.

  • Just wondering how would they know how long you have been there without tickets? Do they mark your tyres like (i think) they used to, or take time dated photos or something?

They have a car or person going around and taking pictures with their app. I was caught one time because I pulled over a no standing sign to look a parking spot and next I got was a fine in the letterbox. I tried to reason with them that I got a parking spot after they got the picture and even showed my receipt with the time but they didnt care.

    • +2

They had an initiative that uses camera and AI in some area to check how long a vehicle is parked at one spot/area. Then they also have people going around like naira mentioned too.

  • Applies to Brisbane's 7869 metered parking spaces

Is is all of Brisbane or just inner city? If it's the former then I suggest updating the title please :)

      Updated, thanks

All of Brisbane City Council street parking metres are being switched off.

The move applies to Brisbane's 7869 metered parking spaces, which are mostly in inner-city areas.

I think it is inner city and surrounding areas based on this pdf. https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/sites/default/files/document…

I think if the parking meter is off when you park, it would be safe to say you will be fine.

      • +9

        … you will be fine

        you will NOT be fined.

  • Is there an official release from BCC, rather than concrete playground?

    Free On-Street Parking
From Wednesday 9 February until further notice, all on-street metered parking spaces across Brisbane will be free to assist local businesses with their economic recovery and ease the transition for employees returning to the workplace.

Please note time restrictions still apply and will be enforced.

For example, in a 2P Meter 7am-7pm, Monday to Friday zone, customers can park for a maximum time of up to two hours then must remove their vehicle from the zone. Customers that overstay the parking limit may receive a fine.

Off-Street Parking – 50% off published rates from Wednesday 9 February until further notice
To assist local businesses with their economic recovery and ease the transition for employees returning to the workplace, Council’s two off-street car parks, Wickham Terrace and King George Square, will be half price (50% off all published rates).

I'm very happy time restrictions are still enforced. Last time this happened, it was a free-for-all, and everything in the CBD was full before 7am by tradies working on construction sites.

        How dare they!! 🤡

      • +2

Yeah I remember this in 2020. Not just regular 2 hr parking spots either, Loading zones, drop off zones, pretty much any available space had a construction workers 4x4 parked in it, usually for the entire day. Hope council actually enforce things this time.

  • Ohhh look Adelaide City Council, you box of spanners, councils can do nice things.

      Too busy building churches

  • On the flip side. I went it Melbourne City for the first time in 2 years. Saw street parking with a big blue P sign and a pay station. Parked, and paid. It said I only needed to pay until 7pm so $1 for the spot. Sweet.

I come back to the car and find a ticket on the window 😕. Ticket says "stopped in a no parking zone - $180" wtaf?

Turns out, after 7pm the spots become a bus stop… Wow. Sure it's my fault for not paying close attention to the signs. But why have a big blue parking sign and no notification on the machine when I buy the ticket?

With predatory fines like this. It's no wonder people don't want to return to the city.

      lucky you didn't get towed

      • The tow guy would have made a mint. There were 6 other cars who fell for it along with me

        • maybe they're there because of you

        • Was it clearly signed but you didn't take notice?

    • +3

"I will never set foot in Melbourne again, due to a parking ticket I got in 2014."

This happens in Brisbane too (Margaret st). Turns into a bus zone - poorly signed and poorly lit at night. I challenged the inadequate lighting but they didn't agree - pricks.

      • +1

You have more chance fighting a murder charge than a council fine.

Finally a place locals can park their Campervans now that they can't afford rents.

  • -5

Lol to help support local business, why what’s the matter isn’t everything fine with almost all people jabbed? Lol

    • Right?! I thought everything was supposed to be great once we opened the borders and stopped lockdowns.

  • thanks OP will head into the CBD this saturday and support the restaurants

    • Weekend free parks are easy to get anyway

      • No it is not easy in the CBD, there is no free weekend anymore.

    • King George Square is normally $5 all day on weekends, so according to the blurb, it should now be $2.50.

  • I’m Unlikely to be in Brisbane, but upvoting since I like the idea.

  • -2

    dang, just left last weekend

    • good

      • +4

I'll come back then, this isn't over

  • +2

Won't someone please think of the poor Brisbane carpark operators.

  • +1

Cam confirm that it includes Southbank in Brisbane

    • Pretty sure it includes any metered spaces in the BCC area.
