Choosing Compatible Parts For A Computer

Hey guys,

I'm building a computer. Nothing fancy, just a simple workstation so no need for a gfx card. I've done some research on the parts but would someone please be able to confirm that the following parts are compatible.

  • Motherboard - AsRock Z68M-USB3
  • Processor - Intel i5-2500
  • RAM - 8G Kit 1333 - g skill
  • Case + power supply - Thermaltake Commander MS-I USB3.0 + 500W power supply
  • HDD - 1TB Seagate 3.5"

Thanks.

    Intel i5-2500

Why not for an extra $10 (or so) get the i5-2500k, as you already have the Z68 mobo

Everything else seems fine(parts are compatible)

If you want, you can add an Optical Drive, if you want one, a cheap and simple LiteOn or LG is fine

    • Thanks for your friendly advice Issh,
I don't plan on overclocking this machine because I don't to have to deal with extra heat issues. Might save myself a couple of bucks on the processor and get the i5-2500. Thanks for suggesting the DVD drive, I'll get the LiteOn Optical Drive to make installing the OS more simple.

Even if not planning to Overclock I suggest the 2500K
More efficient and if you ever sell it will be more saleable
Off Topic - good luck to your Lakers, I fear they will lose in the early rounds like my Celtics this year

  • You guys have convinced me :) Definately getting the 2500k now. Would you be able to inform me if the hdmi output on the mobo is able to provide sound? Thanks for your help

HDMI should always include audio as it's part of the specs of the format
      Check the Asus website http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=Z68M/USB3

I recently specced and bought a pc from this site including a $30 Easter discount
      mrpcgeek.com.au
      Found via OzB http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/65604
email [email protected] with your parts list and ask for a price
Probably get it as cheap or cheaper than anywhere and they will assemble
Very good service and mention ozB for a discount ;)

      • That's brilliant ! I shall shoot James an email and see if he can out do MSY's prices. Thankyou

the difference between the 2500 and 2500k is the unlocked ratio for overclocking and the better onboard graphics.

Since you have no video card the 2500k definitely looks like the way to go.

  • I really appreciate all of your help guys. Can't wait to get my hands on the parts and update my super laggy pentium D.

  • Don't know if it's too late to make suggestions and particularly one that isn't probably of great value to vanilla PC use… but would recommend you consider using a mother board that can be used in a hackingtosh. Can't remember the boards that are good to go but head over to tonymac for the list. I have an Asrock z68 board, not compatible. Hence no further knowledge of getting apple to run on a pc.
