Looks like this car is based on wltoys 124017 v1 and suffers from really bad cogging.

I have the wltoys 124017 v1 and the cogging is so bad it is almost unusable - really takes the fun from the car in the grass /dirt

Better off finding and getting the wltoys 124017 v2 with the updated motor, esc and 19T pinion which fixes the ridiculous cogging problem

    • Glad i havent bothered with any of the brushless ones yet.

We have a few a959b/979b, a 12428b and a 124018 and havent had any drive issues.

    • There is an upgrade kit to fix the cogging on the v1. If you just change the pinion, the cogging will be fixed but the car will be slower. The upgraded motor will bring the speed back up.

Ah don't show me this. I've just spent 2hrs trying to fix my kid's MN99s using replacement parts that Banggood sent me. After a day of use my son plugged in the battery backwards and it killed the motor controller. Lucky I'm an electronics engineer, so I ordered a replacement IC. I mean, not even a reverse polarity protection diode in it. Anyway that was fixed after some solder work (after waiting 3 weeks for shipping, my kid wasn't happy). A week of use afterwards (not harsh/hard use), one of the diff cogs started slipping, so it was RWD only. A day later the same problem happened in the motor transmission. Borked completely then. Complained to Banggood and convinced them to send me a new motor and a 'upgrade' diff/axle shaft. Well the latter is useless. I had also ordered 'upgrade' suspension parts and none of it is compatible with the 'standard' bits, so you have to hack it, break bits to get it together. I'm going to try to get it going RWD only now and let my kid play with it as is, hopefully it lasts more than a week.

The quality of this stuff is pretty bad. I'm surprised they can charge >$100 for it. I want to chuck it and buy something decent.

    • I’m interested in getting something like this for my son, thanks for your insight. If you do end up getting something you think is more reliable please share.

    • Pulled out my 'Jet Hopper' the other day (not used in 35 years). It still works perfectly. Absolutely flogged that thing. We created a ramp off the roof of the house. Never broke a cog…. Not made like they used to.

I still have my old Tamiya RC car. Used to jump it off all sorts of things.

I think the significantly lower speeds back then helped quite a bit with the durability.

Edit, also adjusted for inflation they were significantly more expensive.

      • Ahh yes! I have a Madcap that I’m trying to get parts for, I might upgrade the motor and get it an ESC. And lithium-* battery. I remember my old 7.2V NiCad would last less than 10 minutes from a full charge. I used that car for a couple of years until the tyres got bald and the engine cogs wore down. Also need some more steel bearings.

These sets were expensive, but you got good quality.

Re the MN99 stuff, the upgrade bits don’t come with any info or manual, to have to work it out and it’s not straightforward.

  • Buying similar products from a local hobby store isn’t much more expensive than this and at least has proper warranty.

Got a link to an example?

They were not even remotely close when I last looked.

      • I’ll be honest I don’t know the specific spec differences, but something like this looks similar even though it’s 1:10 scale

Couple of things, that's an online store. I thought you were meaning like local bricks and mortar stores. They are better prices than the stores i thought you were talking about though.

Car itself is a brushed setup, not brushless. Only 28kmh according to their page, less than half what the car in the deal does. EDIT: uses Nimh batteries as well instead of lipo?

Also looks to use far more plastic than the "EAT14" (what a stupid name though).

Their 60 kmh brushless one is around $300 https://www.hobbywarehouse.com.au/hsp-94107top-11v-66001-2-4…
