  • Anyone know why my fogbits are dying but next to it, the salvinia minima are growing so well….
Are they competing for food and the frogbit losses?

Fogbits usually refers to the same plant as salvinia minima, are you referring to different plants?

You would need to provide much more info about your tank and its conditions: How much light do you have? Soil? Fish? Water-changes?

If you have a lot of plants and no aquasoil, I'd recommend a fertilizer like Superfood or Indian Almond Leaves. Frogbit sits on the top of the tank so a lack of CO2 would not be the problem.

Feel free to contact us if you have any more questions.

That’s really helpful advice. Clearly you been doing this for a while :)

      • No, frogbits are not the same as salvinia. Totally different shape size and leaf thickness. Yes i understand both floating types.

Both above water, and leaves are not getting wet.
Same tank, same water, no c02, with guppies. Yes I put flourish fertiliser.

Thats why i was wondering why the frogbit are dying but next to it, salvinia are growing.
It is possible some floating plants can't live together?

        Thanks

        • Oddly I've always had problems keeping frogbit alive in my aquariums. The leaves always seem to die away. They do great in my pond though.

        • Flourish only contains micronutrients and trace elements. I would bet that your floaters are suffering nutrient deficiency.

You need to also put in macronutrients (NPK). I use powdered KH2PO4 & KNO3. My micronutrient mix is AquaGreen's Amgrow Trace Mix.
You may calculate your nutrient dosing schedule or powder dosing schedule here: https://rotalabutterfly.com/

If you want an easy all-in-one mix, see:

"It is possible some floating plants can't live together?"
This is called allelopathy and I have never witnessed it affecting plants in the aquarium hobby (to the degree that they die). It mainly inhibits algae species.

        • Apologies, I haven't grown Frogbit or salvinia, so am not aware of the difference. You mentioned flourish fertiliser, is that Excel or the actual water-column fertilizer?

Trying a few different fertz may be a good idea to find what is missing with trial-and-error otherwise, since they both get nutrients from the water-column what they need may be in shorter supply and more competed for than rooting plants. But it also could be just different condition requirements of the two as well.

That's all I can think of at the moment though. Hope it helped :)

  • Hello, I have a large pond , approx 10,000 litres. Can you recommend a bundle for this? Also, do you ship plants and fish to Brisbane? Thank you.

    • Yes we do and for 10,00 Liters, a combo like this may be a good start but it will take a while for them to grow out to fill something of that size. You might want to consider a few of these combos (We will add extra if you get more than 1).

  • Perfect, was just looking to plant my 300L tank.
