    My dogs love this stuff.

The duck jerky is better size for smaller dogs.

  • +2

I'm curious if it's safe for human consumption.

    • +4

It smells awesome. Their duck jerky smells even better. I haven't been able to gather enough courage to try it yet. If I had to eat dog food this would be my choice.

      • Please don't eat dog food :-)

      Product Type: Pet Supplies
      Model Number: B197
      Package Quantity: 1
      Country of Origin: China

      I'd give it a miss.

      • +1

If it was the B250 it would have a flavour explosion. So yea I'd give it a miss too.

I have tasted it. It tastes like my booger. (I'm being serious)

      • Send us some your boogers for accuracy.

  • My Labrador thanks you.

My dog absolutely inhales this stuff

You mention it and she goes berko

  • Is this good value in terms of dog treats? I'm planning for a future puppy and wondering if it's over the top

    • +1

It's great but for a puppy I'd be a bit careful introducing it as they may eat it too quickly and get it stuck in the throat. Its a bit tough. Dogs absolutely love it though.

    • I wouldn't give it to a puppy. They have a tendancy to swallow stuff whole. I cut mine into small pieces before feeding it to my dog(6.8KG).

  • Yum

  • what's in this that makes it not suitable for cats? the price difference is huge…

    • +1

These pet treats, made in China, are often irradiated, a process that has been proven to be fatal to cats. The ones that are sold as cat treats are more expensive because they're often made domestically within Australia, or processed via another method more expensive than irradiation.

Why not just feed your dog chicken breast at 1/3 the price?

    • Because you'll end up doing your head in trying to rationalise Ozbargain logic.

$31/kg on chicken breast graded as pet food and packaged in China.
$11/kg on chicken breast graded as ColesWorth RSPCA approved human food and grown in Australia.

      Also:

      Colesworth - evil duopoly.
Amazon - benevolent 800 pound gorilla monopoly.

Dried chicken breast is roughly four to five times lighter than its original wet weight after being rehydrated.

So $31.66/kg is actually equivalent to (at worst) 4kg of chicken breast. At Woolworths, the lowest price for chicken breast is $11/kg.

By purchasing the Blackdog chicken jerky, we're saving between $12.34 and $23.34 for a shelf-stable, dehydrated dog treat.

So should I be eating this dried chicken breast instead of fresh chicken breast if I want maximum protein per dollar value?

  • +5

Please be careful and do your research if you choose to feed your dog this product.

Some Blackdog products, including the chicken breast fillet, are made in China. It can be confusing, as the label states '100% Australian owned,' but the country of origin is China.

So, why is being made in China a problem? Because the meats are often irradiated.

    Why is irradiation a problem?
Irradiation is a process used to kill bacteria and extend shelf life, but it can also cause the breakdown of nutrients and create potentially harmful chemical byproducts. In some cases, it has been linked to negative health effects in animals, such as organ damage or digestive issues, especially when consumed in large quantities or over extended periods.

This method has been banned for any products meant for consumption by cats, as it has been proven fatal in many cases.

I’m not trying to spread fear, but please make an informed decision about whether it’s worth the risk before feeding these products to your pets.

    • Damn I wish I saw this before I bought two kilos!

The branding is really shady, from making it appear Australian, to calling it breast fillet and showing the ingredient as just chicken on Amazon when there's actually soy protein and a bunch of other fillers.

    • Thanks for the heads up! If anyone's interested in further reading, check out the link below:

RSPCA's stance is that pet food should not be irradiated.

    • For this reason we started making our own. Australian chicken breast from the butcher in the dehydrator, and then stored in the fridge.

  • If you guys have money to burn wooo. $35 for 1kg of chicken. That is like buying a raw chook on Hamilton island.
Put away your phones, get a oven that cooks low and slow, 60 degrees celsius. Buy chicken, even at woolies and coles $13-18 a kilo? and enjoy dried meat.
Take the phone out, munch on the tasty dried meat snack, while you puppy starts drooling and making "I want human snacks" eyes at you.
