What's Your Last Year (12 Months) Saving?

I was curious to understand how much people actually saved in last year or last 12 month's. It's net saving (not including investment property price gain or I would have saved 10k more if I didn't went for holiday or brought car all that crap…net saving means from your cash income what you saved in your account/brought stocks buy price etc).

My total cash and stock in Dec 2020 was $102k and in Dec 2021 I had $119k. Net savings of $17k in this year ( I bought $26k car this year's). I include my stock price at buy level and not at current price as they keep planctuating.

What's your or family total net savings in last 12 month or year (not total saving of your life)?

  • I saved then spent here

I will never consider that as saving. I won't consider buying house as savings as when you sell next year you may make loss…only saving when you sell and made profit and profit in your pocket…

But you included stocks in your "total cash and stock" savings. What's the difference?

Op may not have a house, and doesn't want to feel left out.

        • -3

I did included stock as you can sell easily (more like cash)….If you have high volatile stock I wouldn't include….Selling house is completely different (stamp duty/agents/maintenance etc)

            @explosion:

What's the point, if you aren't going to include the current value? If you class it as "savings", then the current value is important, not the price you paid.

          • @explosion: Very selective and non-consistent rules that you are applying.

And stock volatility is very subjective as well.

Not sure about 2022. Waiting to see if Putin takes Ukraine and Biden's response.

My Accountant told me to say I didn't save anything, so I'll go with that.

    A bit arbitrary isn't it?

Maybe a percentage of income would be more meaningful? Altho even that would be situation specific

    You guys have savings?!

There's no point comparing yourself to everyone who comments on here because no one is saying how old they are, how many kids they have, how much they earn etc.

If you're 50 and you've paid off your mortgage and your kids are adults it would be quite easy to be saving tens of thousands each year but if you're a uni student working part-time, living in share accommodation then it would be a lot harder to save money.

Also remember most people just vote for the highest number on these polls, I know I do.

      • There's no point comparing yourself to everyone who comments on here because

It's the internet, and everyone lies.

Plus, it's an ozbargain poll, so everyone either picks the highest or lowest number.

I bought a high yield MercTesla. That is a 80K saving to start with.

    Bank interest 200 dollars

Lol @ the amount of “more than $100k” votes.

    • +4

Yeah I know right. To save $100k you need to make about $200k and have NO other expenses. This place is bonkers sometimes. Must be saving a heap by buying eneloop batteries and using the fuel app.

  • +7

Your poll is pretty bad because the “Less than $100k” option can be chosen by anyone who also saved less than $1k, $5k etc.

I probably saved about 70% of my entire income in 2021. No debt except credit card debt which I pay off monthly.

    • +4

Doesn't matter, most people saved more than 100k anyway!

  • +5

OP you left out the winner of your poll more than 1 Mil .

    This is OzBargain
The real poll is how much did you save off RRP in 2021

Damn, this site must have been momentarily hacked by Whirlpool.

  • Victorian lockdowns allowed me to compare prices/usage/brands of bathroom toiletries
    Shavers
    Shaving cream
    Soap
    Lip Balm
    Toothpaste
    Floss
Deodorant - spray v roll on

Then I blow all the savings on my giant American V8 - which has so far avoided depreciation.
Drive carefully and use fuel app.

At the end of last year, positive.

By now, probably no savings over the past 12 months

But friends and family are fed and clothed

So, I'll chalk that up as a win

  • Where's the negative savings selection?
