    Teach Your Monster To Read

My monsters already know how to read.

    • +5

They'll probably wish they don't once they start reading your comments.

      • +4

once they start reading your comments.

        They proof read for me…

Fwiw reading eggs is the best one out there but the subscription is expensive.

    • -6

      is the best one

Best one is your local library, and it is free…

        On boy here we go…

Having a background in education, I’d recommend people do their own research on Reading Eggs first, particularly if your child has learning difficulties. Especially considering the cost involved. This is at least free.

      • Good to know. Thanks.

      • This is pretty vague. Can't you just link to what you're talking about? Or give us some guidance?

        • +2

I don't think you have read the comments correctly.

They are saying, don't get Reading Eggs if your child has difficulty reading. Get the ones OP has posted because it's free. The link is at the top of this page.

@onggie: Yes but why though? If Doowyah has experience in education then I'm interested as to their opinion why Teach Your Monster is better than Reading Eggs for kids with learning difficulties. Sorry didn't seem like too onerous of a request. I get that one is free and one isn't but I take into account value rather than pure cost as well.

@MikeWhitneysHair: I'm not familiar with what is taught in Reading Eggs nor this free app, but if I were to take a guess at what Doowyah might be referring to, it would be to Literacy programs that has a systematic approach when teaching phonics.

My (very limited) understanding is that public schools in WA (or whole of Australia?) has to use one of the Structured Phonic Programs outlined by DSF (Dyslexia SPELD Foundation) when teaching Literacy. So if a child has reading difficulties, they may need to be through the phase which some programs call 'preparation' phase (e.g. PLD's "Preparation: Pre-Literacy Phase"). And these phases may not be where Reading Eggs (or even this free app) starts, so it may cause the child to feel frustrated if the apps go straight into the CVC words.

Here's a link to a list of the programs by DSF: https://dsf.net.au/CMSPages/GetFile.aspx?guid=7ce6a8da-6f3e-…

' do your own research' hmm sounds familiar

      • +1

Could you at least provide some topics for people to research?

My main concern was that the above comment was recommending a paid for subscription program. I’ve seen it used across whole school settings with mixed results depending on age and individual needs. There’s no one solution fits all kind of program but Reading Eggs has a free trial I’d recommend to look at first before subscribing. Also, Teach Your Monster to Read is free and another tool used across Australian schools to support children in reading.

Thanks for the share, might check it out. My experience with reading eggs and similar apps is that these things are good with adult supervision. If you leave your kids to learn by themselves then eventually they just find ways to only play the games and don’t learn anything.

    Thanks op, I don’t have monsters…I have demons. 😆

Also free on google play, downloaded for my monster

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teachyourm…. Was $9.99 now Free

    • Thank you. Clicked in to look for an Android link.

Highly recommend. My child used this app in prep at school last year. It was handy to have at home as well during lockdowns… luckily I downloaded it years ago after seeing it free on ozbargain 😃

  • Which age range monster are we looking at

    How endearing

  • Also free on android. Says it was $9.99 now free.

Edit: I see someone else posted…

  • My 2+ year old likes reading eggs because she gets rewarded for her incorrect answers in learning words like "the" … ie a "egg splat" for a wrong press, nothing for a correct press.
I've only played with the one reading eggs app, but to me the design seems weird for that reason

Teach monster Number skills and Reading for Fun are also free. Downloaded all three. Thanks OP

  • The title is offensive to Monsters

This is a really good app. Got it for free as well but would have been totally worth the $8. Heaps of content that goes right from super early letter and sound recognition right up into relatively complex sentences and sounds. Phonics based so it actually teaches them properly. Took my daughter from being completely illiterate to reading quite well within a couple of months.

I guess Monster sounds better than gender non-binary or neutral that some cult schools are trying to implement

  • Highly recommend this app. Got this for my son when he was 2.5 years. 2 years on and he still loves it.

  • I think this app is fantastic. I really really really recommend it. My son loved it and the progress was really noticeable.
