Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM Lens $3839.20 Delivered @ digiDIRECT eBay

130
DDIRECT20

Been eyeing this lens for a little while now, I don't think I've ever seen it go below $4k? My mate at Digi Brisbane who always tries to do me a deal straight up said to me get the lens off this eBay sale he won't be able to match it in store so I take it really is a good price.

    Canon Lens $3,839.20

    Cough… cough….

It is a little hard to swallow isn't it

  • Anyone going to Broden this?

    • Bill Gates ?

Sorry, I thought it was the lens mug from Aliexpress at first. Almost pulled the trigger lol

  • Thanks OP, bought 5.

    bokeh not enough at f2

    • At 70mm, the bokeh on the sample shots look quite nice.

    • Have you tried this lens or check sample images?

This lens delivers impeccable image quality and decent bokeh for a zoom lens!

    • It's a zoom…f2 constant max aperture is unusual. I often stop my 50mm 1.4 down to 1.8 as it is. 70mm @ f2 is giving a larger aperture than that, and better portrait length to boot.

It went below $3.7k back when digidirect still had the lens at about 4500rrp.

However, I missed it back then, and it's rarely even been included in their 20% sales since or has been OOS locally.

B&H, when you factor in sales tax in NY and conversion rates from USD to AUD has it for about $4700AUD.

I know other retailers in Oz currently have it for about $4.3-4.4K, but this is the best price this lens has seen since about 2018.

    Effectively replaces the 24mm (arguable), 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm (arguable) f/1.8-2.0 equivalent.

Did a recent shoot where I had to change the 16mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm multiple time in 4 hours of shooting. Missed a few shots because of it.

At this price point, for a professional shooter, definitely worth the consideration if it suits your shooting brief.

Yea I started a photography business on the side and shot a wedding end of last year. Did the ceremony with 2x R6 and 24-70 2.8 on one camera and 105 1.4 on the other. Thought about running with 35+105 but venue was quite tight so I didn't feel comfortable not having something wider than the 35. The images that came out of the 105 were magical but the 24-70 while more than adequate looked a bit lackluster next to the 105 images which got me thinking about picking up a 28-70 while not a fast prime will still give a more unique look than a 24-70.

Got a very small and fairly casual wedding coming up next month where I didn't feel like needing to rent out a second R6 so I figured this lens would be perfect for it so I thought screw it and pulled the trigger haha. That and the lens is short everywhere and prices are expecting to go up if what Canon Rumor posted was anything to go by.

At this price point, for a professional shooter

      Are OzBargainers professionals though?

  • Lol oh wells glad everyone can at least have a laugh!

    • Ha ha…🤣

  • +1

Its a bit of an in-between lens.. a compromise.
A 2.8 would do the job just as well for the majority of pro work at a reduced cost and weight. While 1.4 primes would give you more of that in shallow depth of field look..

But I guess it has its benefits if you were one body/one lens shooting.

I bought this lens for ~$3600 in Dec 2019 from Amazon AU. I was tracking it and week after week the price kept dropping, then it got to~ $3400 and someone bought it, and I think there was some sort of Amazon algorithm that pushed the price back up and i got severe FOMO and bought it. After I bought it the price automatically changed to $3800 I think.
I believe there was also 8 - 10% shopback on cameras at the time too…
Other than the price i love this lens for so many things!

    • must be one of the lucky ones…I hadn't bought the r5 yet, so was on the fence about the lens. Wish I had bought it when it was hovering around $3.6K

how do you find it? aside from the weight, is the sharpness acceptable for this price range?

      • +1

The lens does so many things, it’s not quite as good as the primes but you can’t complain about value. i find the image quality to be super sharp.
the weight is probably just okay. the arms can take it but you don’t want to have it hanging off the neck for long periods of time.

    • Man $3400 that's insane…the only copy at Amazon AU right now is 4799 fulfilled by DigiDirect.

  • +1

Shot with this lens a full day last week … my arm still hurts. It’s a nice lens but the weight is crazy - makes the R5 very front heavy. The 24 1.4 kills it … the 85 1.2 kills it … it’s supersharp but it’s still a compromise. Still not sure if I love or hate this lens.

    • I'll take it off you if you decide to hate it…

    • How did you find the images? I didn't mind the weight when I tested it on my R6 but I'm someone that's used to running around with a Sigma 150-600S and 105 1.4 Art haha.

      • +2

The image quality is great … it get closer to the feel of the primes. For me it is a lens to put on when I don't have the chance to change lenses fast and need a zoom on the 2nd body - If a lens is useful to you will depend on the use case.

        • Yea for sure getting this lens was partly knowing I'll use it for specific cases and a lot of GAS/FOMO lol!

  • +3

Great lens. But if you're like me and a prime guy, and thinking this one lens would replace a few primes in your bag, it probably won't. It's design to feel like it could, but then they made the 50mm and 85mm f1.2 so good that makes this feels like a brick. Even the old EF 24mm f1.4 feels sharper then this at 28mm f2.

    • Yea I am holding onto my 35/50/105 1.4's for sure as I posted above for me it'll be specific use case and because of GAS/FOMO haha.

    • Does it feel sharper OR is it sharper ? If the former than most likely it is due to blurrier background at F1.4 compared to F2.
And pricewise, EF 24mm f1.4 itself would cost you $2500. So, figure out how much you need to spend to get 3 or4 primes.
The only real concern about this lens (after the price) is its weight.
Another thing I do not really like is a wide end which is not 24mm.

      • I have been trying to minimise my gear for simplicity and I think this lens is definitely the answer. Not a pro, just hobbyist!

        Definitely sharper than 50 1.4!

But yeah, the weight is real and attracts a bit of too much attention for my liking …

IQ-wise, you won't regret it! So good!

Also, as you mentioned yourselves, you may actually save some $$ by having this one compared to collecting all of the primes.

      • I think it really depends on what you're want to do in the end with the lens. The only lens I am moving after this purchase is my 24-70L 2.8II; my Siggy 35/50/105 1.4 aren't going anywhere.

I didn't have issues personally with the weight but I am used to shooting with 150-600S and the 105 1.4 so YMMV.

  • This alone makes jumping ship to Sony FE mount worth while.

The RRP of Sony's equivalent (24-70mm Gmaster) has RRP of $2999 and is often on sale for under $2k!

    • +4

The Sony is f2.8, not f2. It's not the equivalent.

    • +2

Sony does not have F2 equivalent. Correct me if I am wrong but no other system make F2 24/28-70mm lens.
And no one jumps ship from a system that have F2 zoom so that they can get a cheaper F2.8 in a different system, let alone pros which is what this lens is targeted to. Usually it’s the other way round. People change system to get a better lens that is not available in their current system.

    • +1

Yea as the guys mentioned it's a never been done f/2 standard zoom…something that was rumoured that Sigma was going to attempt back in the day for the EF mount but Canon actually managed to deliver with the RF mount.

  • Been debating the RF 24-70 VS RF 28-70 for a year, the weight of the 28-70 always makes me worry. It's even heavier than 70-200 ( 1070g, comapre to 1580g)

Finally decide to go with 24-70 for the lighter lens, 'cause my RF 15-35 already feel front heavy, and uncomfortable to shoot the whole day wedding.

Any one know the current ebay sale on 24-70 RF 3,119$ is a best deal?

    • +1

Looks like so it's even cheaper than all the other grey stock out there. As fmatt mentioned above it's probably been cheaper but I doubt we'll see those prices any time soon considering RF lenses are meant to be in short supply and Canon's been struggling to keep production up with demand so I'd imagine once local retailers clean out their inventory it'll run short too and prices will go up…hope I am wrong though.

    • That price is as good as it get nowadays. In the R and RP early days, you can get the 24-70 f2.8 for $2800 with combined sales and canon cash back, funny enough it was from Digidirect as well, 2-3 years back. Now with R3,5,6 available, the lens demand is high enough they don’t need to do as much discount on these RF lens.
Being an opportunistic photographer, F2.8 can be heavy and cumbersome to lug around all day, so I mostly use it in low light, indoor, or when I want sharp and shallow depth of field photoshoots. I’d be more inclined to take the 24-105 F4 on day trips as it’s more versatile (range) and portable.

      • I have the same thoughts on my 24-105 F4 which I'll stick with till world economy is back to normal. Which probably means I'll stick with it forever :-(

  • Bought this from digiDirect last month for $4500 😢

I have never seen this lens included in the 20% eBay deal before …

Definitely one of the best zoom lenses or probably the best zoom lens in the market …

    But,
    - Heavy
    - Bulky
    - Attract too much attention

So, yeah … there are trade-offs with this great lens … Actually consider or reselling the lens, but, might suffer huge loss given that digiDirect when compete with 20% rrp like this

    • +2

Yea I was asking my mate at Digi and he said it's basically never on their 20% off sale (as in normal store) which makes me wonder if that's the reason on their website it sits as "pre-order" so they can get around not putting it on sale despite having stock. I think he said they get some rebate from eBay so it's on the eBay sale this time who knows.

I miss the old days when the xx% off sales at Digi would even apply to their pre-order items as well.

      • I mean, if you look at R5 on eBay at the moment, you will notice that they are having 20% off, but, they have jacked up the price, which I believe what they usually do with RF lenses! Very surprised that this time, this lens is included in 20% off and the price is not jacked up!

        • +1

Yea for sure I was surprised too which is why I bought it despite not sold my 24-70 just yet not sure when we'll see that price again. I guess it's a super high cost lens and it's not selling so this was an opportunity for them to move some inventory especially if they are truly getting rebate from eBay.

          • +1

@basketballfreak6: Been reading the comments and I wish I am doing more professional stuff like you to justify my expenses on this expensive hobby lol

Aa, true! Didn't cross my mind previously!

this was an opportunity for them to move some inventory especially if they are truly getting rebate from eBay

            • +1

@G-Bard: Haha it's just a serious hobby for a long time up until last year I decided to take a side gig more seriously.

I will readily admit this lens was more GAS and FOMO because of price though.

In saying that I don't have a problem investing in a good lens when the price is right…I look after my gear despite use and quite frankly every time I've sold a lens I've gotten most of my money back making it feel like I've rented for many years for very little money.
