  • NFC?

    • Of course. It's a Google pixel phone.

No More Support by Google! The absolute last security patch was released this month. Why spend $2xx dollars that have no more security updates? As for cameras, yes, they are good BUT other cheaper phone are catching up.

    • +2

The unlimited high quality upload to Google photos may be worth it if you take a lot of photos.

      • $2xx for unlimited HIGH Quality photos…you might as well spend the $$$ for Google Drive so you can store Original Quality pictures.

        • +1

I guess it depends on your usage. Original quality takes more space. It can easily chew through Google One subscription if you take lots of original videos for example. But the Google One subscription does have other perks like family storage etc. Just saying it MAY be worth it to some people

No longer applicable, ended on January 31, 2022.

        • +4

I believe that only applied to original quality, high quality still is unlimited

      • Does this apply to photos taken by this phone only, or to the Google account logged in this phone?

        • +2

          The latter

      • You can buy original reburished Google XL phones in near perfect condition for about $350 and have permanent Original Quality uploads.

        • You're wrong. Original quality upload ended on January 31 this year.

            @kampret: That's Pixel 2.. I have Pixel 2016

            Goto: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6220791 >> Android tab

            Pixel (2016)
You get unlimited storage in Original quality at no charge. You won’t be able to back up in Storage saver quality (previously named High quality).

Just checked my (Pixel 2016) phone under Photo Settings and it says: "Backing up from this Pixel is free and unlimited"

On My Google Pixel 4a, it says "Backing up in Storage saver from Pixel 4a (5G) is free and unlimited"

            • @noshopping: You are correct. I've got a pixel 1xl permanently plugged into power running syncthing from my pixel 4, so my p4 syncs the original quality photos to the P1, then the P1 backs them up. Pretty seamless to be honest. There's been heaps of discussion around this on OzB in the past. I've backed up 10's of thousands of DSLR raw files via the P1 as well.

        • is it this phone ? it is $179

          • +1

@bazingaa: yep i think that's it. That only has 32gb, I got 128gb version so can store more photos while it syncs to google photos.

    • Pretty lame only a bit over 3 years support for a flagship mobile

    • +2

Google software support isn't worth much atm anyway.

I love the stock Android/Pixel experience when it works, but has been a bit of a clusterf*ck the last couple of generations. Each update seems to introduce new issues, with Google denying that longstanding widely reported issues exist.

From commentary online it seems like the Pixel launcher software is the cause of a lot of this, but using a third party launcher hasn't helped in my case.

At the moment I have issues with Bluetooth audio cutting out when the screen turns off (have had this since day one with my 3a XL, as has my wife with her 3a), performance is shot, with lots of lag that wasn't there previously, and BIG delays in being able to answer a call when my phone starts ringing (lots of people reporting this issue after the last update).

      • Sadly Android seems to struggle with 4GB ram these days. Both the OS and apps have gotten heavier. The BoM weather app uses a good 300mb…

  • No more unlimited original quality storage on Google photos.

Maybe you guys are thinking of this the wrong way - yes Google has dropped support but it has a factory unlockable bootloader - Custom ROMs will keep this going and mostly up to date for years to come. Good for kids.

But the battery? With a phone this old, don't expect much from it.

Just traded mine in for $70 and good riddance. Crap build quality, major bugs that take months to fix, and Google is shit to deal with. No more Google devices for me.

    • You lost money, could've sold it for way more.

      • Not if he can get $450+ trade-in bonus for Samsung Phones :)

  • Pink Only.

  • Any recommendations for $350-300 or under budget mobile. Thanks in advance

    • +1

This Pixel 3 is a good recommendation. If you read the comments on custom ROMs and the uselessness of Google updates and understand this phone has the same OS as the latest PIXEL phones you'd see it as a bargain.

Go to GSM arena and use their compare tool to compare the pixel 3 to any current phone you choose and you'll realise what a bargain this deal actually is.
