Issues Connecting Asus TUF-AX5400 Router to Telstra F@st 5355 Modem/Router Combo on nbn FTTB

Hi all,

Recently bought a new router (Asus TUF-AX5400) as a long awaited upgrade to my old Telstra F@st 5355 modem/router combo. Currently using Superloop and we have FTTB to our place so I knew I would have to keep the 5355 as a modem and use it in bridge mode. So far, I'm just having no luck getting internet…

I'm very unfamiliar with this whole thing but I'm able to get the 5355 into bridge mode and have the router connected via the WAN socket to the WAN socket on the modem (is this correct?). The modem shows all the correct lights active and same with the router, except the router also has a red light for the WAN indicator. Router is completely set up (with updated firmware) and I can access it's gui in a web browser but it says "Your ISPs DHCP does not function". It's set to automatic IP and Superloop don't have any other requirements looking at their website.

I have also tried the router plugged into the LAN socket of the modem/router and I can get internet acces from the Asus router that way, but I don't think that's the right way to go about it….

Any help would be appreciated!

  • Okay so this could be wrong, but I think you have to disable DHCP on your Asus setting.

Other way around if they want the Telstra equipment to act solely as a modem, in that config the Acer would be doing the IP address allocation.

  • I would have thought that the "WAN" socket on the modem/router would be for WAN IN. To connect to your LAN, use the LAN sockets (especially since that seems to be working!).

The wiring diagram here seems to support this.

      • Thanks! Will try this when I get home

I have also tried the router plugged into the LAN socket of the modem/router

This is the easiest way. Going another direction leads to headache.

You need to connect the Router "WAN" port to a standard "LAN" port on the modem …
Put the modem into BRIDGE mode and disable DHCP (it may disable DHCP automatically), in BRIDGE mode you will lose VoIP phone though …
Operate the Router as usual, have the ROUTER manage DHCP … just don't double up DHCP …

router connected via the WAN socket to the WAN socket on the modem (is this correct?).

Should be Modem LAN socket to Router WAN Socket

Any LAN socket should be OK, If not try the socket closest to the Modem WAN Socket, if that still fails, try the one furthest from the WAN Socket.

Superloop use DHCP only, so router should be in DHCP mode

    • Love the help. Will try when I get home and report back.

You had it configured the right way for bridging a VDSL2 modem to a router on FTTB.

    Telstra F@st 5355 modem LAN——Asus TUF-AX5400 router WAN.

    Disable the Telstra F@st 5355 modems Wi-Fi.
