Help with Router Selection for nbn FTTP

Hi all,

We are moving into a new place soon, just a single storey, 3 bedroom place. I have checked on the NBN website and the address has FTTP.

I'm going to sign up with Superloop or ABB. But need help with recommendations for a router.

Just key bits of information

We are just going for the basic 25mbps plan.
Most demanding thing we will do is watch Netflix/Prime or zoom calls
wifi coverage across the house would be great, but it doesn't need to be really strong in bedrooms.

Not after a premium solution, just low to mid-range but reliable! I have no idea what to get or do.

I thought maybe something like the TP-Link AC1200 Whole-Home Mesh Wi-Fi System 2 Pack (Deco E4) might be sufficient, but no idea if that is the product I need.

  • If you have a 4K TV you may want more than 25mbps.

If you can run wired back-haul between those two APs it'd be ideal, placing them about 1/3rd and 2/3rd across the house, depending on layout etc. I've done that with an original Google WiFi 3 pack, though one dead centre of the house and the other two at the outer rooms.

If you're relying on the wireless function, they may not get a good enough signal unless you have them pretty close to each other, like adjacent rooms or at most one room between them. Also, those units don't have a dedicated wireless back-haul channel, so any device hanging off the "repeater" unit will have limited bandwidth - not that that'll be an issue on a 25/5 plan.

Seriously though, aren't the 25/5 plans only ~$5 cheaper than 50/20? 50/20 is usually the bang for buck sweet spot & faster than that diminishing returns. As mentioned above if you have a 4K TV you'd want the 50/20, otherwise other traffic could ruin your stream

Future proof yourself a bit and go with wifi 6 router.

E.g. https://www.pcbyte.com.au/p/tp-link-archer-ax1500-wi-fi-6-ro…. Posted by someone a few weeks before. Not the cheapest but you get idea.

    • There would be no point if they’re only on a 25mbps plan.

  • I got FTTP 25mbps connection and using a Archer C3150 (old tech) in a long house. No issues in 4K streaming even at peak time. I probably have like 20+ wifi devices attached to it as well. Just set a budget and get a modem, you cant go wrong with TP-LINK under $200 modem or something similar.

TP-Link Archer AX1500 that @avoidfullprice mention would do.

Why not try using your current router in new house and see how its goes?

    • We were with Kogan NBN and FTTC. We got a Kogan modem/router as a part of the deal. Assume that won't be suitable for FTTP? Or will it work?

Unfortunately all our stuff is still with the removalists so I can't check what modem/router they gave us.

      • Does that modem has a yellow (usual colour) network input? Then you can just use it as router.

      • It is suitable for FTTP.

I just purchased ASUS RT-AC68U, based on the reviews. Not the cheapest but under $200.

    • This is a good choice.

    • where did you find this under 200

      • It was at that price on Amazon when I bought it

  • Deco E4 is suitable for FTTP under 100Mbps. For anything over 100Mbps you need to replace the Deco E4 with a faster router.

  • Deco m9 is probably good enough. not wifi 6 but is tri channel

yes you can get faster ones for more money but, really, you dont need them to be faster given than NBN probably wont get above 100Mpbs anyway.

Or you can get a longer range router/modem like some of the Nighthawk. Probably much the same price overall, maybe slightly less.

  • Deco M5 (3 Pack) seems to be good value. As cheap as $212 with the Good Guys Commercial.
