  • Guys can anyone tell me the substantive difference between nasal and saliva tests?

It obviously reflects how the product was tested and approved, but I am wondering if there is any fundamental difference.

    • Having had both used in the past week I can safely say the saliva ones are a real PITA to use (which surprised me) , although the nasal ones are a tad painful and i THOUGHT the saliva ones would be better you get bubbles of spit in the vial, its harder to mix, and made a bit of a mess with my 10 year old doing it. Test wise they both seem to be the same once you drop the solution into the circle but the saliva one was even tricky to do that as it was thick and phglem like and didn't drop into the hole easily, more smeared all over it and eventually sunk

my 10 year old slightly vomited when coughing the 5 times you have to too.. If anyone who used these actually did have covid there would be a much greater chance of spread just because of the saliva

We paid for our nasal ones but got the free saliva ones because of my kids. (qld) We now have so many we should just be testing for fun!!

      The biggest issues are
1)The sensitivity is based on manufacturers data, not independent testing
      2) The sensitivity is based on knowledgeable usage (i.e. by a trained professional). Which us plebs aren't, so you gets lots of false negatives.

But if you believe the professionals the nasal RAT's are more accurate.

Here's a lengthy journal article about comparing PCR type deep nasal swab, nasal & saliva.

TLDR: PCR type deep nasal ~>80%(even with low viral load), RAT nasal ~80% (at peak viral load, but much less when not), RAT saliva ~54% (peak viral load, drops off then not).

Anyone still need to buy these tests? I believe if you don't have any symptom then most likely will show Negative anyway and may show positive after showing symptom for a day or two.
I bought the pack of 7 and only used one, a bit of waste.

    • Same I bought during the panic of late January, how silly was I! Got a 10 pack from Amazon and a 10 pack from this company, used one just to actually try it, other then that have 19 sitting there and will prop expire before I need it. Waste of over $100

    • A friend of mine had noticeable symptoms, sore throat runny nose high fever etc, used a RAT negative, then got PCR next day was positive. At this point I don’t even know if it’s worth using these at all

      • I knew few people they initially tested negative then after a day or two of having symptoms they tested positive, so guess would be waste to just test if you feeling well.

      • Just had exactly this. One kid positive. Wife & I did 3 days of RATs. Very mild symptoms. Followed instructions exactly, quality samples. 2SAN quality nasal test. All negative. More people from our gathering (first in 3mths!) got positive RAT & PCR, so we got PCR to be sure. I’m positive, she’s not.

I trust science, and what’s we’re all trying to achieve. But there’s obviously a lot of wiggle room in the numbers.

  • My 14 year old used this and tested positive but negative on other brand and PCR. Following week, again tested positive but negative on the other brand (no PCR tested). Very confusing and kind of wasteful. No covid symptom anyway.

  • Reminder that if you’re a pensioner or have a healthcare card you can get a 5 pack of RAT and the chemist for free.
