Which Carbonara Sauce Do You Recommend from Coles

Looking to maybe make some fettuccine pasta and then just add a premade sauce to it after the pasta is cooked as a new change from just doing convenience microwave meals.

Might work out cheaper and tastier.

But which carbonara Coles sauce do you like or advise to avoid.

I have woolworths in the area also but Coles is closer and cheaper to deliver so in my next delivery I can add maybe a pasta sauce to give it a go.

Looking at https://shop.coles.com.au/a/lithgow/everything/search/carbon…

There looks to be about 4 ready made sauces to choose from and 1 recipe base.

Any favourites or definitely avoids?

As an example I tried aldi roti paratha and a few woolworths and Coles roti parathas and the best one by a long shot was definitely the Katoomba brand and the roti paratha variety.

It just tastes the best and not as oily as the aldi one.

So anyone tried the premade carbobara sauces? If so which one did you like.

How did the mac n cheese turn out?

Didn't get around to it just ended up tasting more convenience meals I think.

Eating twisties right now because I did not plan my week right.

Just buy eggs, diced bacon and Parmesan

Will go way further dollar for dollar

      What about the cream?

      • +11

You don't put cream in carbonara…
Italians have killed people for less ;)

      • Legitimate question.

    • +1

      And taste better

    • Trying to go for less prep and ingredients to prepare because reasons.

A traditional carbonara actually only takes as long as the pasta takes to cook. It’s surprisingly quick.

  • I find all carbobara sauces need added bacon to get ensure you can taste the bacon in the sauce. One or two rashes is all you need.

I live in a meat free household so everytime I cook meat I feel the shame and guilt from the household.

Basically I only "cook" meat when they are out or don't feel as guilty.

That is why microwave meals work well because it is more stealth.

      • Just smear some lard as the pan base for cabonara. Won't smell like bacon to make it obvious but will come with the great pork fat flavor. I'm guessing eggs is still good because a real cabonara egg sauce is miles ahead of any bottle stuff and not too much of a stretch in terms of effort.

Why don't you try all 4 and come back to us with your findings…..

    • -1

That is the plan just thought to ask to get ahead of myself.

Kind of like checking the weather before heading out.

      That's all.

Doesn't hurt to ask or does it?

What happened to community feedback lol SBOB.

      Had a hard day?

      Tell us about it.

      • +2

Well, you asked for food advice last time and based on above…did nothing with it

Pasta sauce jars are like 2 to 3 bucks each, go crazy and try them all in one binge comparison meal week.

        • -7

Just because I did nothing with it so far does that mean I won't use this info in the future?

I am sorry I did not know there was a time limit on this.

Seriously dude try think positive and not so pessimistic that is my advice for you.

Think better of others they might just think better of you.

If you are always so negative how can you expect others to be not as negative as you.

Well the logic here is I ask the community they can say yes or no to certain products I read that information digest it then make my own decision before I go buying every variation out there.

This is ozbargain we ask others about what they think you and I have been here awhile yet you still choose this path. why.

You should know that pasta sauce jars don't last forever they expire so if you buy all the varieties out there there is a chance they will expire by the time you get to the last one did you know that.. if so again read above if not well now you know.

I am not binging one item for a week.. done that a lot and variety is the spice of life.. but if I do find a good item well then we shall see.

As always if you got nothing good to say or offer just try stay in the shadows but I am always up for a spar.

The idea is you create the question then someone next week or next year or next decade from now gets to read this we are creating content and it is not like you have anything better to do with your time or life I mean we are both here on ozbargain lol on a sunday.

So we can keep talking and wasting our time or you can make this a good thread to actually read and post relevant information to the topic that is up to you man but just be ready for the reply lol :) hey its not me its u

            It's pre made pasta sauce…
You could have made the sauce from scratch in the amount of time it took to post that.
            But you do you.

            • @SBOB: i have some limitations and restrictions where I live that prevent me from using the kitchen how i would like to

share living can be a pain and even more so when there are dietary fanatics in the building etc etc

basically tl;dr it is what it is i wouldnt be this difficult if life had not chosen for me to be so think about that

Kind of like checking the weather before heading out.

The weather is not based on personal taste or preference btw.

        • True but if an overwhelming majority go one way or the other that can sway my decision.

  • As above, home made is excellent.
    Yolks - carbonara
    Whites - pavlova
    .

    • I would not even be on ozbargain if for some special reasons.

I know homemade is best but household is uh special.

Could you please elaborate why you can't cook a simple pasta sauce please? Genuinely very curious.
I understand the no meat in the house of vegans etc, but what stops you cooking what and when you want?

      • Oddly my fussy household - the home made carbonara (see my other comment below) is always a winner

fettuccine = good choice. But try to make your own sauce/base, it’ll taste way better. Leggos jar sauces are not very good but there isn’t much to them - I grew up basically on the tuna bake sauce of theirs

    • Regardless I guess with the main brands you can’t go wrong. However they are full of fillers and sugar. But if you don’t mind go with Leggos.

  • Jeez guys. Don't use carbonara sauces or any cream or egg whites for carbonara.

In fact don't even use bacon. You can go fancy and use guanciale which is the traditional protein but easy mode is pork speck (easily bought from aldi or woolies).

    https://www.recipesfromitaly.com/spaghetti-carbonara-origina…

    • Maybe I need to go to Italy for a bit to try the real thing.

    • I've never heard of pork speck before. Unfortunately… I got a "Unfortunately, we couldn’t find results for “pork speck”" message from Woolies — might have to go in-store / deli for that!

I apologise and am sorry for the state of this thread it can be misinterpreted as a shitshow but I hope some good comes out of it.

No harm in asking! <3 - always give cooking something new a try

      • +1

        Amen Sir!

  • +1

All pre-made white sauces are really bad, packed full of sodium and yet still somehow either bland or sour. Just make your own its super easy and tastes a million times better.

    • Well I am hoping the ones that come in a container not packet are pre cooked then just frozen.

  • First thing you should do is go to a reputable Italian restaraunt that has a reputation for Carbonara, at least that way you can taste what a real carbonara tastes like from an authentic standpoint.
Then you should try a few recipes at home, or watch a few youtube videos for inspiration.
    DONT buy a prepared sauce.

    • +1

Yeah I have a local that sells it for $19 comes in a good sized chinese take away container.

delivery is like $5-8 I forgot.

      minimum is $25.

      so this is my staple.

If you are not going to diy it -
I personally prefer Dolmio pasta sauces better than leggos and other brands from the supermarket. I think it has more tang.

Nothing beats homemade though - you could use vegan/veggie bacon if using meat is an issue, otherwise you could just add ham so you don't have to cook it and stink up the kitchen with delicious crispy bacon smells. It won't be as good, but I think you will be less likely to get caught eating it.

    • +1

Well hopefully I get to this and don't forget or sidetracked like I usually do and can report back which ones I liked best etc.

  • +1

make some fettuccine pasta and then just add a premade sauce

Make the pasta, and not the sauce?
From purely a convenience factor, the opposite would be better.
A carbonara is probably the easiest and quickest to make.

  • If you want to make something similar and even easier you could make Alfredo.
You only need the pasta, butter and parmesan cheese. I always add bacon and mushrooms but you don't need to and it is delicious. Even the kids eat this. This is the link for the original recipe

    https://www.curiouscuisiniere.com/authentic-fettuccine-alfre…

  • If you want real/cheaper sauce, try a non-duopoly brand. They sell shitty sauces for high prices with pretty marketing, after buying them in bulk.

  • +2

Basil pesto is another quick and easy option… just stir through cooked pasta and season with salt/parmesan. Add cream/light cream to make it more filling.

    • Good idea; I forgot about that. Perfect fridge clearout meal: baked suitable veg mixed in too - it’s a winner

    • I actually tried this it was the coles basil pesto jar.

Cooked some penne pasta then heated up the basil pesto in another pot.

      Added them together.

Not for me it was ok but would not try it again.

  • one of the quickest and easiest meals you can make and very tasty, traditional Italian carbonara (use bacon) or just follow the carbonara sauce instructions
