Help with Fonts That Have Been Changed in My Chrome Browser

Hello all,

Newbie user here. A few months ago, I noticed that my fonts on certain webpages on Chrome have changed. I've tried messing around with the font settings in the browser itself, and also within the Windows 10 settings to see if I somehow changed the default font to a different one. I've done numerous searches too, on the web, to try and find a solution.

You can see this issue here: https://imgur.com/a/wSXfukZ (most of the text is in the 'different' font)

I sometimes download fonts to be used within Photoshop and Premiere Pro. Not sure if that stuffed something up.

I thought I'd reach out here to see if anyone, by odd chance, happened to come across the same issue in the past. Thanks for taking the time to read, and happy ozbargaining!

UPDATE: To all of you that took the time to reply - thank you. Thank you thank you thank you. The issue ending up being "Helvetica Neue". Shout out to Peter Enis for the solution.

BUT: You're all absolute legends. Shout out to every single one of you. I was honestly hesitant to post, I had this nagging doubt that this was a REALLY simple fix - that I was overlooking something super simple, and I was going to get grilled for it.

You've all gone above and beyond to try and help me solve this. Hopefully you all see this - thank you for your suggestions. Absolute legends. You've solved this issue that's been plaguing me for MONTHS. Am super appreciative and thankful - keep being awesome, all of you 👊🏻

Check the Chrome Inspector for the font-family being used by that text and try removing that font from your font library in Windows.

Here you go i just grabbed the possible fonts. I think it's Roboto in that SS but i'm half asleep.

      'Market Sans','Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Roboto,

I think anthpls is saying that they have "decoded" the web page you showed, and the section that you're having trouble with is asking for that section to be displayed in the fonts that they have listed. Chrome (or any browser) looks down that list in the order shown and uses the first font on the list that is installed on your computer.

The web page author is really saying that their first choice is that they would like your browser to display the text in the Market Sans font. But, if you don't have that, use their second choice (Helvetica Neue), or their third choice, and so on. If you don't have any of the fonts in their list, display it in the default font.

Peter Enis (see below) says that they have seen the same thing as you are seeing, and it was because of Helvetica Neue. I think you should try removing that font and see if that fixes the problem for you.

        • A completely wasted opportunity to say P. Enis. (Yes, I am 12 years old)

I've just done a Google search for Helvetica Neue problems, and that font seems to cause a lot of issues. I think Peter Enis may have your solution.

          • @pjetson: Ahh, legends!! Yes, this has fixed the problem. I started up my computer, had this page open, and attempted to delete the font. It said it was "in use". So that was my first hint. Closed all my Chrome browsers, deleted the font. Re-opened, and the problem has been fixed!! So grateful! I much appreciate your thorough reply though - and everyone else that replied with suggestions. You guys are part of what ozbargain is really about.

Thank you thank you thank you.

      • Thank you !! It ended up being Helvetica Neue! I've deleted it and I have my browser fonts fully back, woohooo

Eesh I can see why you want to change the font. Does it just happen to that website, or a few?
You can change chromes default font in Menu > Settings > Appearance > Customise Font
Do you have the default font in there or has it been changed?
Also do you have any overarching theme being used for Windows (like a third party themer).

    • It happened to a WHOLE bunch of websites! Some of them, only part of the text - but a bunch of websites the entire thing was like that! It was hurting my eyes to try and read them. I had to "highlight" the text with my mouse, just so I could attempt to decipher it.

As far as I could tell I had the default fonts there: https://imgur.com/a/bX9gfeT - so I was baffled why this was happening!

No overarching theme or third party themer. But all very good suggestions!! Deleting "Helvetica Neue" has solved the issue, but thanks so so much for your suggestions, so appreciated!

I don't have Chrome so can't check if the setting exists but in addition to a default font setting, make sure you haven't disabled the option to allow the site to specify it's own font settings (or perhaps conversely that you always had this turned off in the past and have now turned it on).

    • ahhh yes that could have been a possibility too. I went through soo many of the Chrome settings over the past months - I don't recall seeing an option like that - but I may have missed it. Thank you for your suggestion!

Absolute life saver. I have just started work, (I work from home), first thing I did was uninstall the font. I open eBay - and poof. So happy I could cry happy tears!! Have been trying to solve this for MONTHS. Don't know how to thank you!!!!

I'd like to propose that a badge be awarded to the OP - so few people report back to let us know that their problems are resolved (or not).

    • This is way too kind! My problem was happily, HAPPILY resolved. Still so grateful!
