if looking to upgrade your CPU.

You'd also likely need to upgrade your motherboard.

    • My mother is old, how often do I needs to upgrade her ?

        Once per lifetime.

  • Motherboards can be pricey but if you look closely for deals they do pop-up. Got a basic Asus Z690M motherboard on ebay on sale a few weeks ago for $224 (before taking into account discounted gift cards) that runs the 12700K perfectly. MSI Z690A-Pro with Wifi 6E and decent VRMs was also $276 in that sale.

A current reasonably priced board is the Z690M Aorus Elite for $242.1 after discount from Shopping Express

Nice even better. It doesn't mention anything about the games on ebay unlike their website listing but should be still valid as well I'm thinking

    Get the non-F version

    • Eh it's an extra $70. I'd just drop a crap ol GPU in if I absolutely had to and save the money.

      • why just another component generating heat and taking up space, why would you get this if you have a dedicated graphics card… If anything id say GET the F version, so you dont have crappy onboard graphics.

unless there is something im missing?

it just stuffs up windows selecting the wrong graphics card and getting no screen in windows occasionally and can be more trouble than its worth.

        • +5

Having the non-F version comes in handy when troubleshooting errors, selling your GPU for example before a new launch and just using the PC for general browsing etc.

        • It's a pity hardly (if any) motherboard maker actually maxed out the iGPU resolution as technically, the iGPU in 12th gen is capable of display 4 x 4K display. Most motherboards will only offer 2 x 4K@60Hz with HDR.

However, agree with you. Anyone building Intel Core i7-12700 based system really shouldn't be using the iGPU.

Difference between K and KF variants for someone coming from AMD?

    • +3

K has integrated graphics processor while the KF has the integrated graphics disabled

      • so KF is better

    • +2

K has integrated graphics whilst KF does not

      Performance wise, the exact same

    • K means unlocked, so you can overclock. But coming from amd, this shouldn’t mean much because all of them can overclock. Just a difference from the standard 12700 which are more likely to be used in oem systems from say Dell.

Even if you have a graphics card integrated graphics can mean a computer that still works when you remove it for any reason (e.g. if you upgrade and keep using the mobo and cpu as an 'old computer). I would always pay the extra $20 - $50 for the flexibility of a non-F processor.

I like it that Intel makes their F and non-F versions the same in terms of CPU performance. Unlike AMD, which gives you a weaker version of the CPU if you want integrated graphics.

    • but their integrated graphics have always been way better than Intels iGPUs.

i think AMD have too lower the power envelope of the CPU because their iGPUs are much more power hungry.

      • AMD screw you currently with their APUs. You lose PCIe gen 4 support. I don't believe Intel does that to you (but if you buy the cheapest Intel chipset based board… then um… I think you lose PCIe gen 5 support so you are left with just PCIe gen 4 support).

        • +1

no pcie 4.0 support, and only 16mb of l3 cache means a 5000 apu gets comparable frames in games as a 3000 series, and in essense an unlocked laptop chip in desktop form.

imo AMD APU are much more suitable for dgpu less PCs but one do need a bit of gpu processing power, whereas intel non-f cpus' igpu are more akin to 'hey i already give you a display output, what more do you want from me' kind of vibe i reckon.

          • @Brrrrt: It's a little bit pro AMD I reckon. Why can't we get a 5000 series AMD desktop CPU with iGPU? With Intel, at least you can wait a bit to get the GPU, with AMD, you pretty much need to decide which route you want to take.

Also, perhaps it is because Intel supplies the Thunderbolt 3/4 chipset to Apple, Intel has now added up to 4 x 4K support to the iGPU. It's just most m/b makers don't care (because they know most people who can actually afford 4 x 4K will probably buy a dedicated GPU). It's just puzzling why AMD is doing what they are doing. For PS5 and Series X APUs, AMD is NOT doing that, so clearly AMD is capable of doing it right for at least 2 years.

The iGPU from Intel since 11th gen is slightly better now so AMD cannot just pretend they don't need to beef up the iGPU. It's just annoying that when you look deep into AMD, you find AMD is not doing their best.

Need a massive promo on an itx board :(

    • if it makes you feel any better i dropped $469 on an z690i aorus ultra

  • Any substantial benefit coming from Ryzen 9 3900x? I hate my current Asus mobo Crosshair Hero VIII Hero wifi and had issues with running full XMP memory profile!

    • +1

in productivity taskes, I believe the gains are pretty small. Its in games will you see the true improvements

    • I've got the same MB and CPU, but I don't game much at all. Still wondering if I should upgrade at all. Was thinking of getting either a 5900X or switching over the Intel with something like a 12700K /KF and a midrange MB.

What RAM are you using where you can't run your memory's XMP profile? A new BIOS was just released in the past week, have you tried that yet?
