Save the money and buy Mario Party Superstars. This one is limited and boring with no DLC.

    • Yeah this one kinda sucks. Only works with joycons too.

    • I heard that Superstars drags on a bit and some find the original more fun. What exactly is limited?

      • +3

If anything, Super Mario Party is the one that drags thanks to slow mechanics, CPU players and 'allies' rolling dice. Mario Party Superstars has speed control so you can speed up text and CPU turns so the games go much faster.

      • +1

Nah it's much faster. Personally I think it's still too much time spent on the boring board parts but you can choose shorter games, AI turns are pretty quick etc

      • +2

We have both. I think for family play, Mario party is much better. The joycon mechanic games are really fun and level the playing field with non gamers. Superstars has some old dud minigames (also great ones) and it's all gaming skill so newbees just lose all the time.

Just my experience. Superstars is great if you have a switch lite of course. This is what I suspect its for.

        • This makes it all the more harder to decide, although it makes sense that all the reviews I've seen are made by enthusiasts and therefore lean towards Superstars.
I think the biggest decider might be this good price.

      • +1

Only thing that sucks about it is that they should have included more classic games, but especially more classic boards. You have 2 sessions with mates and you’ve already used all the boards. Kinda bummer

    • Thanks for the heads up, just recently got a switch and was looking to buy this for the GF.

Came in to post the same thing, the newer one is much better value

      • Does the newer one have alot of games with motion controls?

        • nar, the newer one (Mario Party Superstars) has zero motion controls.

        • New one is a compilation of the "best of" the older Mario Party games

    • Thanks. I will wait for the price to come down a bit $68 is still too high.

    • Wait… does Mario Paryu Superstars have DLC??

      • Not at present, but given they've abandoned Super Mario Party, if any game is going to see further content it would be it

  • Thanks. Really good to know - I cancelled my order.

which one is better for young kids? (5&7) i figure motion controls would be a touch easier, so would this be better than superstars for younger kids?

    • +2

Yes , i enjoy the motion controls more as well. So would say this is much better for kids

  • +1

Don't listen to the people who say that this is a bad Mario Party game. It has its own qualities and the minigames are mutually exclusive to the new Mario Party.

These minigames are mostly focused on motion controls, and may be more assessable for those who don't play video games much, particularly younger or elderly audiences.

    • +5

I wouldn't say it's a bad game, we had some fun with it, but with only 4 boards we got sick of it fairly quickly. The newer one has a lot more variety, and it's not like the minigames are super complicated in the older games either.
If it had been supported with even a few more boards after launch it'd be a lot easier to recommend.

    • I agree. We prefer this in our house

  • +1

This is excellent buy for your kids. Guys make them happy and buy them

  • If you play all the time, like most games u will get bored. At this price shouldn’t complain

  • +1

Mini games are great. However boards are boring and turns take way too long.

I havn't played superstars. But the series desperately needs some options to speed things up

Edit: just saw the above post, nice, i will go get superstars

  • My 2 cents. Played this one, it's quite fun.

Got my nieces and nephews Mario Party Superstars and they loved it. A bunch of classic games from when I was a kid playing on my mates N64 + Game Cube. Good times. Well worth the price

This was such a massively disappointing addition to the Mario Party series. As others have pointed out, there are only 5 stages and they get very old very quick. I do not like the addition of allies either. Once I bought Superstars it was apparent very quickly it was far superior. I really can't quite put my finger on why to be honest.
