Looking for a Recommendation: Desktop for Kids

Hi,

looking to get a desktop for my kids who are starting high school.

Plan to have it last the duration of high school (if possible) so am mindful of perhaps some upgradability over time..

Will prob want to be able to play games on it over time, but won't be at competition level, i.e. doesn't need to be like super frame rate..

Budget - say $1000-$1300?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Desktop or laptop? A lot schoolkids are taking laptops to school these days and no need for both.

    • Desktop.. saw that one from bpc. Is that any good?

      • you mean this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/683888 ?
Good entry level. Last generation intel cpu. Latest gen most basic Nvidia graphics card: ok for 1080p monitor.
Mid size SSD for Win 11. 1TB HDD should be enough room for a couple of years. Enough RAM.
I think it should keep a child happy through high school.
Can upgrade gpu if wanting to move to 1440p monitor.
Can upgrade cpu to say 11600 but really shouldn't need to.

Needs will change, gaming may change, etc etc

Buy a basic pc now (optiplex etc), upgrade the tower in a couple of years if need be

    • Couldn’t play any online games on this though right? Specifically Genshin?

Try to find a $200 gpu?

        • It's a SFF, that will restrict the options for a GPU, right?

Might also need to add more storage. 128GB SSD isn't very big.

Using an old Optiplex 990 with an i7 2600 and an aftermarket RX 570; can run practically any game you throw at it.

Get a graphics card (will need a smaller one) and a new SSD or HDD, and gaming should be a breeze on it. You won't be running Cyberpunk or RDR2 at max graphics everything, but it'll be a very capable machine.

Look on Gumtree/FB Marketplace or some really good promotions/sales for the hardware.
