Upgrading from Apple iPhone SE 2020 to Apple iPhone 13 Mini. Is It a Good Idea?

Hi

I am currently using Apple iPhone SE 2020 128GB. I like mobile phones with small size (which gets fit in the pocket) and not very big screens. And I don't want to move away from Apple. So I am considering now to move to Apple iPhone 13 Mini 128GB.

I am just a basic user and nothing fancy. And I am with Boost so no 5G coverage as well which I don't mind.

Do you think it is a good idea to upgrade to Apple iPhone 13 Mini? Are there any other options available in Apple?

Thank you.

It's a nice phone but the battery life will be rats

      lol, who told you that?

iPhone 13 mini beats the iPhone 12 in battery life. And by extension, demolishes the iPhone SE. If you have the cash to spend and you really want to I don't see why not. I doubt we will see another truly premium compact flagship for a while. Grab it while you can.

Yep the 13 battery has been upgraded so the 13 mini will be decent.

I have the 12 mini and battery health is down to 82% which is almost unusable now! At 100% it was OK. When it hits 80% Apple will replace it free.

Other than the battery problem, I love the 12 mini form factor and the screen is actually big enough.

The rumours are there is a new iPhone SE 5G with the same home button design coming soon and Apple are cutting the Mini from the iPhone 14 lineup. I prefer Face ID so I would pickup the iPhone 13 Mini.

  • High chance of an apple SE 2022 with 5g in the next few months, I would wait for that.

Nope. The SE2020 would do everything you need it to. Why bother?

Do you need to upgrade? What improvements are you looking for, if any?

If you don't need to upgrade (you don't have any gripes with the SE), then don't.

Agree with above two comments. Based on your use the current phone should be good. I'm writing this off the 2016 SE.

My partner has the 2016 SE and I have a 12 mini. I can't tell much of a difference between them, mine obviously has a bigger screen (in the same size body) and a much better camera but if I grab hers to do something it's not like phones of 10 years ago, where a few years out of date meant they were laggy and terrible, it still works fine. I find the screen a bit on the small side (4" vs 5.4" is a big difference) but it's perfectly usable.

      • Yeah I also have considered a new Mini, as the screen on the OG SE is rather small. But otherwise it's still pretty good. The price of a mini is just not what I'm willing to pay though. Instead I replaced the battery (which literally died), bought a new case and screen protector and it's like new again :)

The best part was she took it to an Apple store to replace the dying battery about 18 months ago. No one in the store knew how to replace it so they just gave her a new one. Might be a few years old but brand new out of box, not a scratch on it and perfect battery means it'll last a while yet.

I only bought the 12 mini because of work salary sacrifice on the 12 mini when heavily discounted meant it only cost me about $500.

@freefall101: Exact same thing happened to me! I went in to buy a battery replacement and they just replaced the phone, no charge. My phone was, at that point, almost 3yrs old.Fantastic service, have to say.

            • @ThithLord: @freefall101 @ThithLord what did that end up costing? I have a 2016SE and might need a new battery soon. Otherwise works fine and love the small form factor.

@doddles: They replaced the phone at no extra cost, lad.

The price I found was about $79 at Apple but yeah, Apple just gave me a replacement phone. Try your luck, you may not be so lucky though

i just got a 13 mini last week and so far it's pretty good. i came from a oneplus 7 pro so the battery life is not nearly as good but it's serviceable, just make sure you turn off bluetooth unless you need it as it seemed to be draining a fair bit of my battery which was fixed when i turned it off.

i switched for the same reason you want to; i just wanted a smaller phone that could fit in pocket easily. still use the oneplus when at home over wifi to read in bed or whatever as i'm too used to big screens.

i would only recommend it if you know you'll like the smaller screen, i know you said you are a basic user but that can mean different things to different people and if you are one of those people who is on their phone all day you might not be happy with the mini as i doubt the battery would last a day if you are using it constantly.

it does feel nice and polished, doesn't feel laggy at all.

If you're happy with the SE capabilities (I know I am!), why in the world would you go the iPhone 13?
Don't do it. Wait and see what the new SE brings… I bet it'll suit you (and me) to a tee!

  • And I am with Boost so no 5G coverage as well which I don't mind.

Fairly certain Boost has 5G now

  • Thank you everyone. Sorry I forgot to mention that the 4.7” screen of my current phone has started feeling a bit small. That is why I am considering to upgrade. 🙏

  • I went from the 2020 SE to the iPhone 12 Mini because of the battery life. Loved the form factor but the battery life wasn’t that much better. The 13 mini is meant to have a much better battery than the 12. Work has since bought me a 13 pro. The bigger size took some getting used to but the battery life is incredible. Don’t think I could go back now.

  • Thank you everyone.

  • Apple event next week, maybe new SE ?
