  • Can we TRS items from Amazon at the airport?

    • Yes, but new rules means they will be enforcing if you return item to country.

      • i thought it has always been like that?

      • +2

sorry I dont understand this. How would they know? Wouldn't they legit need to check everyones smart watch when returning and be asking for proof of purchase?

        • +3

There was a post about it. My understanding is that you could claim a refund when you left, but on import, the items fell under the 10k limit, so they didnt care. Now, you pay GST on import, no matter what the amount was. citation

As for enforcement, could link it to your passport. There was also a border security ep a few years back where the lady was wearing the earrings back into AU she had already been refunded. The amount was pretty high so it was flagged.

Much like most of crimes in AU, the chances of getting caught/enforced is very small, but if you did get caught, they can rake you over the coals.

Tbh - you're probably going to be wearing your smart watch on return, especially if you were wearing it to get the TRS refund in the first place. I suspect most people would talk themselves into getting caught.

          • @Davo1111: Partner is gonna give it a go in 3 weeks time. Will try to report back.

            • @Nalar: It would be very interesting to see how much more enforcement there is. Keep us updated!

          • @Davo1111: I would imagine it would be really hard to enforce this. Say I have a Galaxy Watch myself and find it to be quite good. I buy one for my cousin overseas because I found it on special on Ozb in Australia. I claim TRS on my way to see my cousin and give it to my cousin overseas. On return, there is no way ABF can tell for sure which Galaxy Watch is the watch that I claimed TRS on.

I am in no way encouraging people to break the law, but sometimes I find lawmakers make laws that cannot be practically enforced, just my 2c.

            • @geek001: going in 3 weeks time too - will report back

            • @geek001:

On return, there is no way ABF can tell for sure which Galaxy Watch is the watch that I claimed TRS on.

Like I said, the chances of getting caught are small, but not impossible.

The show border security is a deterrent tool for ABF and encourages compliance. It happened on that, so you can make of it what you want.

              • @Davo1111: Ooo.. Is it a recent episode? It is one of my favourite shows. (Don't judge me! :P) I haven't watched normal TV in quite a while.

                • @geek001: It was quite a while ago. Asian lady wearing the expensive earrings. Admitted those were the ones.

I had a look online and couldn't see it

                  • @Davo1111: I just realised that my question was silly. Of course it was not a recent episode. Australia has been closed for 2 years. :)

            • @geek001: It 100% is tough to enforce, but you get the right kind of officious (profanity) at the airport and they are searching your stuff looking for an excuse. I don't know about you but I'm not in the habit of lying to border patrol, and I'm not sure I'd withstand a ton of scrutiny.

Also probably related to how often you get "randomly selected" for things.

          • @Davo1111: "You border securities are a f**ing joke! Do you know how long I've been waiting!!!"

            points to watch

Guard: "Excuse me sir, is that the same galaxy watch you've claim of TRS?"

      • What happens if you lost the watch?
Only a few hundred dollars I wouldnt bother to file a report.

Great watch. I bought one last year.

    • is there google assistant now ?

      • No confirmed date as of now but recently they formally announced that they will be adding it "in the comming months".
Ive have one since release and even without Google assistant its been worth every dollar.

    • How long the battery lasts?

      • I bought the 44mm version (or whatever the one is above 40mm) and it lasts me over a day on full charge after about a year of owning it, takes about an hour or so to charge back to full but i havent had a major inconvenience from it

        • That is not good! We need somethings that can last at least a few days, a week.
          Thanks for the info.

          • @ky1975: I mean smart watches wont last long simply because of the smart bit. If you want a longer lasting watch, buy a fitness-oriented one as some of those can go 4-5 days between charges (sometimes more if you turn it to a normal watch i.e. backlight off, monochrome screen etc etc).

In saying that, I have the 44m cellular version and can easily do 2 and a bit days on BT only mode (with NFC on as well) and about the same on cellular-standby mode (the watch only uses cellular connection if its away from my phone); on pure cellular mode so the radio is on all the time, it may go a day to maybe a day and a quarter before needing a charge.

            • @stigsphilocousin: Yes you are right, I need a fitness-oriented watch such as a Garmin or Fitbit.

  • Possibly targeted but its offering a further $50 off with code:VIP50 bringing the total to $279

    • Targeted

Came here to post this. I put my watch on at 7:50am and by 8pm battery is down to 9%.

      • does this depend on which screen size u using or if its LTE vs Bluetooth?

      • i put my watch on after fully charged at 8pm last night, used sleep tracking, heart rate intervals, steps tracking, amongst other things and its still at 67% now..

what are you using on your watch?

        • you put "always on" on ?

      • Wow..that is wayyyyyy worse than my Galaxy Watch Active 2

      • I have had the 44mm LTE variant of the watch, I barely use LTE so i usually keep it off. I have always on display but i use a watchface that it quite minimalistic.
I usually get a full day and some with a full charge. LTE use is definitely the main factor killing your battery

        • It's not even an LTE watch, just bluetooth/wifi and the wifi stays off.

    • I have the watch4 classic and battery is truly awful. Doesn't last through a single day of hiking if GPS tracking is on.

      • heard the new update about a week ago fixed the battery issue?
Also is there google assistant now ?

        • Google assistant isn't here yet, as far as I can tell.

I haven't gone full day hiking since the latest update so I can't say. Day to day use it doesn't seem like it's improved at all. I have the 'always on' screen turned off.

But I did remember it was a pain to get it to update. It kept asking me to log in into my samsung account but when I click on the link to login, it'll launch a browser on my phone and says the browser is not compatible. No matter if I use chrome, firefox, edge, or even samsung's own browser - it just says its not compatible.

After tapping around endlessly, somehow got it to update without logging in.

Thinking of selling and going to Garmin. I bought samsung for google pay and the app store. Was less useful than I'd imagine.

Even google maps was less useful than I imagined - for some reason, dark mode only, and bloody hard to see in bright daytime.

Unsure why this is considered the best WearOS. I have it and can say after having it since it was released, I barely use it. Battery life is horrible BUT my biggest issue is how new it is (OS). Barely any apps making it basically just a watch for me.

Would recommend people wait for the next iteration as it should have more functionality then.

    • thanks for the advice ill wait

    • Which apps are missing from the new OS that were on the old?

      • Not sure, I did not have the old OS but I can definitely say that on the new one there is next to no apps. I'm guessing due to how new the OS is.

    • I had the Tizen version and apps yeah they weren’t plentiful but OS was pretty stable. I have the Watch 4 classic on WearOS now and I can confidently say there are more than enough apps…what do you need specifically? Tap and pay, rewards card (via Stocards), remote camera, google maps, outlook and normal mail, messages…the list goes on.

      • I use Stocard and am thankful it is on the watch. Due to work, I require a boatload of messaging apps eg. Whatsapp, Signal, Discord and Slack to name a few, none of which have an app yet. 1password would also be great. Sony headphones etc.. The list goes on.

        Maybe I'm in the minority…

  • I wouldn't say best WearOS watch. TicWatch Pro 3 maybe takes that crown with the battery life. That said, the competition is pretty sparse honestly.

  • Is this the same?
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-galaxy-watch-4-r860-40m…
Seems quite a bit cheaper on Kogan.

Edit: Ah, it's the international version so that has some ramifications there but seems like it would generally work.

    • saw this too - was wondering if anyone has used the international version?
Also is there google assistant now ?

      • there announced recently but release is still months away.

I believe you can sideload google assistant tho.

    • Just FYI to those who bought the international version. I have Note 10 that i bought from Kogan and I cant install samsung health monitor on my phone which is required by the watch to take ECG and blood pressure data.

Samsung health monitor requires both the phone and watch to come from the same region. if it's different it cant be installed. heart rate, etc will work.
      https://r1.community.samsung.com/t5/wearables/samsung-health…

  • The phone keeps beeping when the watch is out of bluetooth range.
No amount of googling has come up with a way of silencing it.
    Anyone?
