Black Diamond Storm 400 Lumen Headlamp Graphite $69 (Was $104.99) @ Anaconda (Club Membership Required)

90

Hi fellas ,

Was looking to buy a decent and midrange headlamp for camping and outdoor activities. Did bit of research and found out this is a good value at this price. So, i decided to buy one for myself and i though it may help for someone looking for a decent Headlamp for outdoor. Likewise, i used coupons welcome10 to drop the price $59 and did click and collect from nearby anaconda. Furthermore, i had paid $50 and $10 through swapped giftcard purchased through shopback on 10% cashback few months ago. If anyone had one before, i would also like to know your experiences and thoughts down on the comments thank you !

More details and reviews of the Headlamp here.

Terrible value. The Sofirn SP40 is way better value: cheaper, brighter, waterproof, can be charged directly into the torch, has a magnetic tailcap that you can take out of the head strap.

I personally prefer having a cache of AAA's at the ready for my headlamp when camping, but each to their own.

        Rechargeable I hope?

      • A powerbank is usually more practical and versatile than a stash of batteries.

Having said that, I got the 160 lm version of this Black Diamond for $15 and it's of very decent quality and gives enough light for my needs.

A powerbank is usually more practical and versatile than a stash of batteries.

With a power bank, if you're halfway through a nighttime hike or camp and your battery dies, you can't just swap out the battery and get 100% power immediately.

        • 3 spare AAA batteries take up less room than a power bank, and can be swapped faster than the bank can charge your headlamp.

The Sofirn SP40 is way better value:

It really depends on how and where it'll be used. I have a few headlamps, two of which are the Nitecore HC30 and Zebralight H600 which is the same design as the SP40.

For camping and hiking, I find them far too bright and bulky. I prefer using my small light Black Diamond. Having too bright a light ruins your night vision and annoys other people as you'll ruin their night vision too.

The rubber loops on the headband are a weak point. The loop on my HC30 has broken. If I was hiking halfway up a mountain or camping somewhere and the loop breaks, that can be inconvenient or dangerous.

For doing tasks e.g. working on something or searching for something, I prefer the brightness of the HC30-style torches. However I prefer the balance of the Olight HS2 where the emitter is small and light and the battery pack is at the back. I don't have to worry about loops breaking on me too.

Headlamps like Black Diamond and Petzl are designed for specific tasks so they won't be good value for the general public. They're for people who want or need high reliability that will just work in a compact package.

It's also easier to pack a few spare NiMH AAAs or primary lithium AAAs, and you'll never have to worry that your 3-year-old 18650 has degraded so much that you're unsure of its runtime. And if you're somewhere in Nepal and lost or damaged your 18650, you can just pick up spare AAAs at a corner store.

      • There's several brightness settings on the Sofirn. I'm not usually running it at 1000 lumens for long.

I've also got a Nitecore HC30 and have used it for quite a few years and the rubber loop looks good as new.

The 18650s last a long time as well and if I'm doing something where light is very important (caving, night hiking) I'm bringing several torches and several batteries.

Yup so does the HC30, but if I hardly ever use it at full brightness then I'm just carrying dead weight on my head.

Do you insert and remove the torch from the headband much, or does it normally just live there? I think inserting and removing it stretches and twists the band too much.

The 18650s last a long time as well and if I'm doing something where light is very important (caving, night hiking) I'm bringing several torches and several batteries. The Zebralight has a similar design but the band is twice the width.

Yup I also carry a bright handheld torch which would live in my backpack or pocket. For me there's no point having a powerful but heavy torch on my head if I'm only going to run it at 150-200 lumens since my second torch would be bright and powerful as well.

Yes i agree, would rather the Sofirn any day. And if i had the urge to buy a AAA torch there's no way i would pay $70 for this and i'm someone whos bought $500 torches.

  • 400 lumens isn't much either imo

Also prefer torch at front and battery at back, they get a bit heavy on the head/neck imo especially when they're front heavy

    • 400 lumens isn't much either imo

That's a good thing in some situations. I usually run my 300 lumen headlamp at medium brightness when camping so I don't ruin my night vision or annoy others.

    • Sometimes you just need something compact and lightweight to see short distances, ie. fishing, setting up fixing up camp shelters, etc.

I have one of these, it's plenty bright enough as a bit of illumination to see what you're doing and where you're going, and you barely notice it on your head. If you need to see further just take a torch too.

  • I just got one of these if any one else looking for a cheap unit:

I'd recommend a potential buyer also consider the Nitecore NU35. Where some of the above discussion is about AA/AAA battery vs. rechargeable models, the NU35 offers both (and chargins is via USB Type C).

The NU35 offers high-CRI and white LEDs, and even red modes. I've found it fantastic and used it regularly for months now. The only criticism I have is the rotation adjustment could use a better mechanism.

You don't need to shop around to get one of those for this price, and you could probably find one for $55 delivered.

That looks ridiculous, also "18000 lumens"?………. yeah right

Or check out the black Diamond revolt ($65 for aqua colour, $79 for the other colours) which is rechargeable but also can take AAA batteries In needed, but it's only 350 Lumens. But that's plenty enough for me

    • I have a revolt and am a bit disappointed. The batteries it comes with are just NiMH, and don’t last very long, and charging them through the headlamp itself only results in a partial charge. If I take them out and put them in an external charger the headlamp ends up much brighter and running for longer. I think I’ll go for a cheaper Chinese brand next time, I’m not seeing the value in Black Diamond like there used to be.

      • The new revolt comes with a Lithium-ion battery. Also the old revolt is 300 Lumens vs the new 350 lumen

        • Thanks for the update, are you happy with it?

I read a bunch of reviews late last year, and ended up buying a Black Diamond Spot 350 Head Torch, which Amazon have for $52.45.

It's got three separate lights - a beam, a flood (for reading etc) and a red light for night vision; all of them adjustable for brightness, and they remember their levels after they've been powered off.

It goes pretty easy on Eneloop AAA Pros, too - mostly because I find half power is enough for me wandering around in the dark.

  • Similar looking to the Duracell one i bought from costco sells for 39.99 for a 3 pack (was onsale for 29.95 ) very happy with it very bright. https://www.costco.com.au/Sports-Fitness-Leisure/Camping-Hik…

I have a similar black diamond in grey (lol grey diamond) since 2013 and still use it for camping. Works fine every time.

  • I'm about to go night hiking which do you think is more specified for use?
