I am tired of lugging around my DSLR just so I can capture shots with the zoom lens. My camera phone is so good nowadays that it takes care of anything close by. I was looking for something in between and settled on this. Amazon have the Canon Powershot SX430 IS for $70 off for $229 This compares to good old Harvey Norman at $389. Most other places have it for $299. I noticed that Officeworks has price matched but no stock anywhere near me. From the Canon website "The PowerShot SX430 IS is packed with features to capture your best images ever. The 24mm Wide-Angle lens with huge 45x optical zoom gives you amazing versatility to capture wide landscapes on your travels and zoom in for impressive close-ups of the kids on the soccer field."

    24-1080mm lens

    • thx..was too lazy to look it up (the conversion)

  • I think what you need is a travel camera. Even this too heavy compared to a travel cam, which easily fits into your pocket.

I have the SX540 and the pictures are terrible. If you have a recent smartphone I wouldn't bother.

    • What iPhone is “recent”?

      • Hard for me to judge because I went from an 8 to a 12, so I'd say if you have a XS or better then the pictures will be noticeably nicer than a P&S.

Overall you are correct. Due to the pace of phone camera technology development, affordable pocket sized travel cameras that are significantly better in most scenarios than the best mobile phone cameras basically don't exist anymore.

However, the OP specifically mentions zoom, and that is one area where this kind of camera still has a significant advantage over phone cameras. A bulkier lens is an enormous help when it comes to capturing detail in distant objects. That said, I have no experience with this particular camera and can't comment on its performance.

720p video recording will be perfect for 1995.

My wife got it to replace her old Canon Powershot S110. She said it's inferior to S110 despite the seemingly better specs. The problem is Canon no longer makes good compact cameras so this is probably the best you can get at this price.

  • This is a 5 year old camera, really not worth even $200.

I wouldn’t buy this if it was free. If it was sitting on the shelf in my house, I’d throw it away.

Everyone here talks about how your iPhone takes better picture but no one talks about how if your phone is out, you’re gonna get sucked into scrolling and checking out your notifications.

Having a camera and your family with you keeps you in the moment to capture everything with both your eyes and this single function device.

If you ask me and youre on a trip overseas and you are glued to your phone enough not to notice the scenery. Then you are certainly doing it wrong.

Sure by all means check your twitter feed and your other notifications in your downtime in the hotel but when you are out and about. That sh*t should stop.
