Hisense U7G vs Sony X90J 65"

Hi All,
I am looking for a 65 inch TV for my living room, there are two models which I am looking at to buy:
1. Hisense 65U7G
2. Sony 65X90J

Sony is a bit more expensive and I could save few hundred $$$ if I go for Hisense. Both models have mixed reviews online. TV will mainly be used for movies/videos and not much gaming. Please share your experience if you own any of these models and recommend which one I should go for.

there is no comparison between these models. The X90J is far superior in every aspect. The U7G is a budget orientated model. The X90J is an upper mid level.

    Rtings comparison X90J vs U7G

"The Sony X90J and the Hisense U7G are very similar overall. but there are a few minor differences between them. The Sony has a better local dimming feature, and the unit we bought has much better accuracy out of the box. The Hisense is a bit brighter in SDR, but not quite as bright in HDR. For gamers, the Hisense supports FreeSync variable refresh rate technology, but this is also supposed to be added to the Sony in a future update."

Also be aware if you did opt for 75" the U7G will have an (awful) IPS panel so that review is only valid for 55"/65" which have the VA panel

You have to be careful with the Hisense models in Australia and the ones in the US which rtings.com review. Apparently there are significant differences even though they have the same model numbers.

I'm not sure about the U7G, but the searching for the U8G brings up discussion such as: https://www.reddit.com/r/4kTV/comments/ouuzgc/hisense_u8g_au…

  • Different Hisense model reviewed in the link below (A8G) but I think the U7G is also quite different for Aus - OS for example is not Android…..

Having said that I spent some time looking at all the 65" model options and went with the U7G about two weeks ago.

I just felt the difference in contrast (when viewing in my local JB's mega store) wasn't that much of a step up beyond this model - notwithstanding OLED models outside of my budget. To me adequate blacks are my priority.

Compared to the model down A7G it was easy to notice that this set has grey-blacks compared to the U7G, which is why I went with this set.

    Good luck!

Hisense's own website says the Australian model differs, but doesn't give any useful specifics.
It does say "Does not feature HDMI 2.1 input and 4K@120Hz through HDMI. All HDMI inputs are 4K@60Hz" and I would assume it's also an IPS panel based on other user's reports.

Hard pass on Hisense - will be terrible for movies

      • Why would it be terrible for movies?

I'm tossing up between the U7G and A7G.

The U7G is $200 more and seems to be QLED with better brightness / nits / hdr. They otherwise seem pretty similar in features.

IPS panels present blacks as more of a blueish grey, which becomes very noticeable in a dark room and when watching movies (especially the letterbox bars). VA panels are far better and OLEDs best for this purpose.

I made the huge mistake of buying an IPS Sony X85 a few years ago and regretted it every time I used it. Luckily for me, the TV had a warranty issue after a year and Sony replaced it with the (then) current model X90H which has a VA panel and it is significantly better. In terms of brightness and colour range they are very similar however.

Here's the example from rtings on what they each look like:
          Sony X85 IPS
          Sony X90H VA

And here's a photo I took when I had both side by side

    Wouldn't touch a Sony TV.

Myself and two other family members have had running troubles with these devices with freezing and failures of the remote receiver within the TV.

I happen to have a Hisense TV that is about a year old (maybe a bit more) and had no troubles with it.

Whether or not the Hisense is best bang for your buck with your budget I'll leave open, but never again on Sony for mine.

  • Does difference between 8bit panel and 10 bit panel noticeable? Hisense is 8 bit whereas sony is 10 bit

  • X90J

U7G in Australia is not the U7G in other countries, don't be fooled by reviews. It's a IPS panel with much worse contrast, and stuck at 60hz

If you want something cheaper then the Toshiba Z770k is the Hisense TV to get (Toshiba uses their panels)
