250W / 36V / 10.5ah Folding E-Bike, The "Garzon Compact 2022" $999 (Was $1999) Delivered @ Garzon Ebikes, Bike Exchange

80

I've been on a week-long search to find myself an E-BIKE for a decent deal.
Very much contemplated buying 2nd hand but people were, in my opinion, perhaps out of line with their expectations, selling 2nd hand over retail.

I've dug deeper and found this bike on BikesExchange, its a "brand new" model for Australia but probably cycled around for a bit elsewhere, I've found this video taht shows, essentially , the same bike performing very very good, so I bit the bullet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpvhHwf5H5Y

This bike folds into a more compact version, I think its super sleek and nice especially with its integrated lights.

I was actually on the phone today with the seller, wanted to check if I can also purchase and extra tire but they already dispatched my order.
I took that opportunity to ask regarding stock before posting, he said they assume atleast 20 in stock :)

Since this isn't a price error and seems like a terrific value, here it is, lol.

This is their website, most information can be found on the Terms and Conditions page. When purchasing through BIKESEXCHANGE they have their own terms on that website.

  • How does this fare against the HIMO Z20 available on Costco for $1200? Or the Qdos/ Infusions ones there for $850?

    • +2

Seems like the QDOS has a significantly smaller battery: 24v 7ah
Battery is exposed and assumably of cheaper quality in comparison to the Samsung one on the Garzon.

The Z20 is poorly reviewed so I'll let that speak for itself.

Besides that, I would say that the 2 bikes you mentioned have a more casual common design, which will result in easier repairability and sourcing parts, batteries, and so on without relying on Garzon to potentially assist with any problems.

      edit;

Also appears the Garzon is atleast 5kg lighter than the both of them.

      • Thanks mate for the helpful response. I am more inclined towards Leitner ones now.

"14 DAY REPLACEMENT WARRANTY" Is that it?

    • +1

      The seller did respond to my WhatsApp question;

      12 Month Warranty.

While its a nice promise I suppose a laid out "agreement" to meet expectations is needed.

  • anything folding ends up janky in my experience unless your going for top of the line.

  • 14-day warranty on a $1k product. I don't know how anyone could call this a deal. I year would be the minimum expected. The fact they give 14-days shows the lack of faith in the product on the seller's behalf.

    • I think it's meant a 14 day replacement guarantee Incase turns faulty.

Seller will have to clarify tho
      edit; (i've asked)

      • -1

If you have purchased one, I would ask them this if you get the chance prior to shipment. There is no other warranty info just "Garzon Ebikes offer a 14 DAY REPLACEMENT WARRANTY". They also offer no change of mind, which is there right, but that's another turn off. Also, statement like "do not offer a satisfaction guarantee". Basically these could be total trash and you are basically stuck with it. Add the fact the only have a 3.2-star rating on Product Reviews is just a red flag to me.

I'd also suggest anyone thinking of buying one to also check local state laws if you plan on riding on public land.

Garzon is a private company posting on there, so their policies may differ.

          but that's also limited

I purchased mine yesterday and tried to add a tire today, is when I also asked about posting on OzBargain.

They have a whatsapp number so I texted with the question.

It doesn't look much better than the Kogan 14" ebike which I paid around $400 new a few months back….

Kogan have a similar spec bike but 700c wheels, etc. https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/fortis-700c-36v-10ah-hybrid-com… for $769 atm….

I'd still be looking at used ebikes - there are tons listed on facebook marketplace or gumtree in the $5-700 range…. I bought an NCM Moscow Plus which had done maybe 1500kms for $550, and a Merida Espresso 200 mid drive for the same - yeah they needed a little TLC for that price but for not much more you can get a something fairly decent - obviously ex uber eats bikes and such should be avoided if possible…

  • It appears their ABN was cancelled years ago, buyer beware

only the handle bar stem folds? hardly a folding bike.

  • +2

I got two secondhand Leitner folding bikes a Libelle for $500 and a Super T for $550.
Spent $ on a service and new brakes although they rode ok. Batteries seem still ok longest ride a few 30k up and down hills and made it back home. Even with a overlimit fat guy riding it :)
Got the first to see how it went then brought another for the wife.
If you keep an eye out you get some hardly used.. Even if I need to replace the battery in the next year I still be better off $.
My thoughts where if we used it enough I might upgrade to something better we get the $ back s/h

    • +1

rode my Leitner Tirol - which is a proper folding bike - every day for about 6 months, charging about twice a week and i don't think i noticed any degradation in battery performance or range yet, except for maybe on some rather cold nights. despite being looked down on by many bike shops, their customer service is great and they sell replacement batteries/chargers.

      • Why the attitude from the shops?
Are we considered scum of the earth because of our comfortable choices? Or?

        • +1

no idea…perhaps it's not a brand they've heard of or sell. other ozbargainers have reported being laughed at by bike shops when they brought their aldi bikes in to be assembled so i'm not surprised about the elitist snobbery at some places.
TBE (now renamed Trek) told me on the phone they flat out refused to service any ebikes they didn't sell, but also, i could bring down my bike to any store to get sent to their servicing workshop to have a look. yeah nah..

          • @tdw: That's a bit sad… wth.
Always imagined the community to be wholesome, I suppose thats on me.

    • That's awesome, I saw one for $950, that's why I didn't care for the 2nd hand ones.

      If it was $500? Easily!

      • facebook i keep thinking I swap to a full size one instead..
Cheap ones do not last long was a full size for $550 last week.. thought i might buy and then swap over later was gone in a few hours.
Yes the ones that are $1300 for a bike you get new for $1400.. They still up there :)
Watch the ones with uber eat bags :)

Service I took mine to somewhere recommended by Leitner close to me..
They did not really want to do it. I bet if it was the brand he sold, they be fine

  • Interested to see how this turns out, hope you'll update this post with a review after you've got it!

    • +1

      You got it! Gladly.
Hopefully the sale will still be ongoing by then.
If their estimate shipping time is accurate, should be sometime during this upcoming week if it did arrive and dispatch from the Depot yesterday like I been told. :)

      • +1

I drunkenly pulled the trigger and bought it but at 6’2 and 125kgs it’s probably a mistake. Wonder if cancelling tomorrow is a possibility.

        • So, those bicycles are 3 things

Pedals only - your feet only
Pedals assist - engine alongside you pedalling
And Throttle Only - engine only

You can get away with throttle only on flat terrain for sure.

Pedal assist on all, and pedals…depends on you, lol.

          Their representative number is:
          0435 604 076
          The name is Victor.

I suppose you could question him and I hope he'll have more accurate answers.

          God I love drunk shopping…lol

@The Milk Man: You’re a good man, Milk Man.

            Let’s see what tomorrow brings!

          • @The Milk Man: After waking/sobering up, I’m gonna give it a go! How bad could it be!

            • @nuts: Yeah! literally what I was thinkign when I bought it, checkout this video, its essentially the same bike, seems pretty capable;

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpvhHwf5H5Y

Also, it does FOLD alot more than it shows it does, so I'm kinda happy about that, saw a production promotional video showing it basically folds like any other folding bike

              • @The Milk Man: Yeah that video was very helpful, appreciate it!

                • @nuts: I just got it today and I'm a bit iffy about it.

                  • @The Milk Man: Yeah man I feel the same, about to put it together but not sure it will be around long. But keep us posted and I’ll do the same!

                    • @nuts: I was mostly disappointed once I realized it actually DOES NOT have a throttle.

                      I misled you and myself.

It does feel alright and sturdy

The attachments I've purchased for it barely fit tho, phone holder, lights , and so on

                      Eh, we'll see.

Sorry about that king, I hope it'll turn out as nice as I thought it was.

The Manual is terrible, if you need help assembling it-

                      I did the wheel first:
                      https://youtu.be/jKdDADdKL4k

                      And then the fork:
                      https://youtu.be/HPBNVd6-vU8

This video is not affiliated with them however the steps are identical.
When I called to ask about how to, I was told I could take it to a professional to put it together 🥲
                      Yeah nah.

                      To operate the screen
Battery needs to be in, and just press the power button, front right button.
                      Long press to turn off

It has a 6km throttle, it'll kick in if you hold the MINUS button

If you want high stronger light, long press PLUS button

The rest is a mystery for me, haven't taken it out yet 💀

                      • @The Milk Man: Yeah I did realise quickly there was no throttle, bit annoying. I’m assuming there’s no refunds which is fair enough, I’ll give it a go for a week or so, it’s definitely got some zip when taking it out so let’s see and then think about upgrading or converting an older bike perhaps 🤷‍♂️

                        • @nuts: hopefully!

Alteast $1,000 isn't the worst investment.
It does feel well made and it looks unique, already a plus in my book.
                          Gonna take it out soon.

The throttle was probably taken off due to common australian state laws, in vic you can't have a throttle higher than 6km/h, which is in line with what's on it.

                          ayeee enjoy yourself
is it carrying you around? :P

                          • @The Milk Man: Yep carrying me around, it’s alright, it’ll get some use. Pedals, whilst small, don’t seem to be an issue. Just rode it into the city, there was a lot of pedalling but I arrived in minimal sweat.

My mate wonders is maybe we can source a throttle from somewhere else. I’ll do some research.

                            • @nuts: I would believe the motor is just digitally limiting itself, there may be a way to unlock it.

                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12ifbdLegvw

I think this is the same display and technology! (while the button layout is different, it still seems to be 1:1 on the firmware)

                              edit;
Well, its a similar firmware, not the same, very wrong of me.
Not sure how to even save the settings.

You can access the simple settings menu by pressing the button next to the power on for a long press, and not sure how to save or advance from there.

                              • @The Milk Man: Interesting. I’ll sus that out tomorrow!

                              • @The Milk Man: Haven’t got the bike in front of me but I was told the code is 1919 if that makes any difference.

                                • @nuts: There was a place to input a code, just not sure what's the equivalent of "Enter" to submit is. gonna have to fiddle with it.
                                  edit;

Aye! Code is correct and works!
Once you set the code you can then press the same Menu button to move forward, if the code is correct, it reveals additional settings. No Throttle settings, you can change pedal assist to add more levels and change speed limit, I believe?
Long press the menu button to save changes :)

                                  Thank you! ♥

                                  • @The Milk Man: That’s very helpful! Thanks milk man!

                                  • @The Milk Man: Just rode it to work for the first time and 2 mins before I got to work the screen has shut off and won’t stay on for longer than one second. I have texted victor and assume he’ll get back to me but not sure what kind of solution I’m after really. Had any troubles?

                                    • @nuts: Haven't taken it on a long ride yet, just gave it a spin, the battery did drain rather quickly and been contemplating reaching out, but wanted to give it another go.

Is your battery full and seems to work fine?

Also, is it just the screen that isn't functioning? does the pedal assist still work? :(

                                      • @The Milk Man: No pedal assist, the screen must control it all, which is not good.

I actually had the opposite experience on the first ride. It was a short one, maybe 14km round trip but when I got home the battery indicated it was full so I took it out for a longer trip the next day knowing that if it died I’d have to walk it or whatever and I definitely stepped the levels down on the flats a lot but it survived. The battery flashed low at me as I arrived home but all up I’d say it went about 30/35kms, I was pretty excited tbh, now I’m worried. A lot.

                                      • @The Milk Man: I took the battery out and rode it 7kms home, it was mostly flat so just a bit of extra leg work required but still, I’m pretty peeved. I’m going to ask for a refund because I don’t believe this is a minor issue. The whole bike will need to be sent back to Perth and I don’t want to go through this again, I hope yours is better.

It is a shame because I do enjoy riding it, it gets me up hills I would normally have to hop off the bike for. Getting it back to Perth will be a pain in the arse.

I should say I don’t think it’s a minor issue because the battery still indicated 3/4 lights full and was able to charge a phone so it must be a bike internals issue. Sigh.

Edit, I’ve been offered a new display, I will chat to Victor tomorrow.

                                        • @nuts: This whole ordeal really sucks.
FYI, if its faulty and you want it returned, its at their responsibility to either arrange a return considering its size, or reimburse you all transportation costs.
I do know what you mean by it'll be a pain too.

I wonder if I should also be worried, had a double knee injury for a while which prevents me from enjoying the bicycle. Will have to keep an eye out for the bastard.

Let me know what ended up happening with it

                                          • @The Milk Man: Oof, yeah, now I can see why you wanted one with a throttle. Knee wise - I think you might struggle if you’re trying to get somewhere as fast as possible, the small cadence just has your legs going around and around quickly without much resistance, which is probably better for your knees but you’ll still feel it a bit the next day, and once you max out speed you can’t really go any faster but I have enjoyed it so far, although I’m not exactly sure what about it I’ve liked the most. Probably the fact that it’s battery assisted and feels like cheating? I dunno…

Victor said he’d express post out a new display and I’m willing to give it a go, so I will hopefully have that by the end of the week. If it’s not that though then I can’t think of anything else it could be, I can’t access the wiring, nor would I try, so it’s going to have to go back if that is the case…Let you know what happens!

                                            • @nuts: Sounds great!
You reckon it'll be easily to replace the screen?

                                              • @The Milk Man: Yeah you use an Allen key to get it off the handlebars and then disconnect it on the cable, should be a simple swap. I’m hopeful but not completely convinced that will solve the problem though but willing to try it.

                                              • @The Milk Man: Got the replacement screen and all seems to be working ok, spoke to Victor and he recommends I don’t keep it on 5 all the time, I wasn’t really anyway but fair enough. He also thinks the motor will only get 8000-10000kms out of it which wasn’t really stated anywhere which makes me wary and want to sell it on at the 2000km mark. I assume that’s based on my weight though.

One problem I have is locating the wheel size option in the menu even after entering the password, it just does not seem to exist and speaking with Victor about it he’s not sure at all.

All in all, I probably should have passed on getting this but I’ll ride it to and from work again tonight and see if I change my mind.

                                                Happy riding mate.

                                                • @nuts: I'm glad it's operational
I hope it lives up to our reasonable explanations.

So sorry to having you entangled in all this.

                                                  • +1

@The Milk Man: Nah mate, don’t blame you at all. If anything this ad got me moving again and thinking about converting my other bike. Getting moving was the hardest part!

                                                  • @The Milk Man: Hey mate, been for a decent ride yet? Keen to hear what you think!

                                                    • @nuts: I was only able to take it out once, and that was definitely a regrettable moment too. Definitely worsened the wounds on my knees , there's alot of KNEE-WORK on this badboy.

It was entertaining but it felt very…unsecure? too sensitive?
Not sure, it could've also been the fact I didn't touch a bike in 10 years.
Its a bit heavy but I bet so are others.

My knees are now actually in a good enough condition, so I thought today i'll take it out again if the weather permits.

I'll definitely give a followup if that happens

Screen arrived? was it an easy fix?

                                                      • @The Milk Man: Yeah definitely a lot of knee work, especially if you’re taller because it requires more leg movement.

The screen was a very simple swap over, you’ll see where it connects on the cable that connects the screen to the motor that you can just pinch and the connector will come out. Of course if you’re not having any trouble then there’s no need to do that.

Keep me posted with how it’s going!

I found that when it’s in level 5, it doesn’t really matter how fast you pedal as long as you’re consistent and the motor will just keep working. Of course completely different situation when tackling a hill.

It does feel a bit unstable at first but as long as it’s put together solidly, you’ll hear some ricketing but I haven’t had any other problems. I’m not hopping curbs with it and just treating it relatively safely. Also haven’t fallen off it, yet but I’m sure there will come a time.

                                                        Stay safe out there!

@nuts: I had google tell me I'm going 35km\h while the screen says 19 💀

                                                          • @The Milk Man: Yeah I'm definitely still tinkering with the settings, there's no option on mine to change the wheel diameter like the books says so I guess I'll just keep changing numbers until it finally becomes accurate?

                                                            • @nuts: Soooo…the bicycle

They're great - But I had a bit of battery problems with the battery draining too quickly and the display not communicating its levels, Victor wasn't the kindest about it and things got heated - but then they cooled down and we got back on "good" (neutral?) terms.

ATM awaiting a new battery to arrive.

I don't know, it feels like too much goes wrong too quickly for the both of us, you know?
Like this was a poor choice.

                                                              • @The Milk Man: Oh man I certainly don’t like hearing this. I haven’t had any battery problems…so far… but the fact that we’re both having issues right off the bat is quite concerning. Unfortunately I doubt there’s anything we can do about it now unless something else goes wrong?

                                                                How come things got heated?

                                                                • @nuts: I bought the bike to use for daily commute, expressing the urgency of the battery replacement.
He took it as me being pushy, and made some pretty aggressive comments, to which I too responded with a similar response.

I took a 3 day break from the Bicycle drama , wrote up again and we sorted that part.

Regardless, in my experience he just wasn't professional.

                                                                  • @The Milk Man: Wonder if he’s been having a few ‘unforeseen’ problems and having deal with them all. anyway, hope it doesn’t take too long to get the battery, keep me posted!

                                                                    • @nuts: I wonder if its old Seller's Seconds that is being passed onto us as "New" , idk about yours, but mine is branded with "ZZAP" instead of "GARZON" like the first 3 pictures suggest.

Can't help but wonder what did we get, since ZZAP Bikes as a company cannot be found.

                                                                      • @The Milk Man: Yeah mine also is branded with ZZAP I’m pretty sure he’s bought a bunch of these from a bike wholesaler and just ‘renamed’ them or whatever. I guess we’re stuck with it now, not that I’m not enjoying, I just probably wouldn’t buy it again, oh well.

                                                                      • @The Milk Man: Out of interest though, the only thing that folds on yours is the handle bar bit right? I'm not missing something and it becomes really compact? If so I think calling this 'compact and folding' is pretty rude also.

                                                                        • +1

                                                                          @nuts: Well, I hope you've had a better experience.

My inner tube tore on its own, no puncture or anything, it just gave up.

I bought 2 BIGW Repco 20" Thick tubes, listen, the difference in quality is night and day.
The tubes in the bike are so paperthin its crazy.

But all in all for $1000 it gets the job done, its just a shame to notice how many corners were cut.

Also I f***ing hate that ZZAP print, lol.

                                                                          • +1

@The Milk Man: oh, yeah, so by the way because the quality difference was so obvious, i went ahead and bought ANOTHER repco tube to replace the front wheel.

Not gonna gamble and wait for a sudden flat on my way to work. that's stupid.

replacing the tubes is a pain but definitely worth the work

                                                                            • @The Milk Man: Wow ok, haven't had any problems like that but I'll swap the tubes asap, haven't been riding it as much as I want lately, gotta get back into it or sell it and get something better.

And yeah, the ZZAP, its an …interesting choice, that's for sure

                                                                              • @nuts: Yeah, I too would.
It tore right at where the valve connects to the tube, which is crazy imo, barely used it.

For a few days I was feeling something is off about it. Glad I found out at home instead of on the pavement.

                                                                              • @nuts: OH!
By the way, the settings to change the WHEEL DIAMATER is; "HD" , just set that to 20 :) <3

                                                                                • @The Milk Man: Ah I had that set to 20 and I felt like it was misreporting…

                                                                                  • @nuts: I'm pretty sure it takes aligning the Speed Limit and other Password Protected settings to get "accurate" readings.
Its a shame he didn't bother setting them up, literally his only job?…

  • How does this compare to the fiido? The prices in Australia are so inflated though.
