It doesn't state the vintage. It probably isn't the same vintage The Wine Advocate gave 93 points to or it would probably cost a lot more.

    • You're telling the story… if you want to take this to the ACCC for false advertising go ahead.

I brought a case, I even made a $2 donation with it (I must be getting soft). I'm just saying that people should have realistic expectations.

I don't know enough about it to make any more comments on your judgement or GWD's ad details. Only know it's a bargain. I bought a case too ofcourse. Cheers!

        • You mean you "bought" a case? :)

But to the port.. in this case it looks like the quoted review was talking about this particular port. Other times I've seen them refer to awards or scores for different vintages or the whole vinyard instead of the advertised wine, so in this case I'd give them the benefit of the doubt.

        • I bought this Port a few weeks ago. I like it and will go for this deal too (or one of the others currently at GWD (eg buy 12 bottles of some wines and get a dozen Port free). I also did the $2 donation last time, that guy from the Sunshine Coast has had a rough time of it.

See those little letters "NV" in the description? They stand for Non-Vintage. Not a single vintage wine.

Subsequent releases of NV wines rarely differ in any meaningful way. See Moet Champagne for one example.

  • great bargain.

  • Bought one! My previous carton of Jonesy is finishing soon mmm.

Anyone tried this port? Or is it for cooking only. Love a good port and cigar.

    • The Wine Advocate says it's a 93, they're the world's most respected wine publication, their opinions strongly influence the wine market. I've never had anything that they've given a 92 or 93 to for under $15, which is what made me suspicious about the implied price of UNDER THREE DOLLARS (taking away the value of the Crown Lager slab).

INTERESTING READ FOR ALL Get Wines Direct BUYERS:

    http://torbwine.com/funnies/gwd2.shtml

    • Finally, as far as reputations are concerned, some part of this commercial chain of events owes other people in the chain an apology; I wonder if it will be forthcoming? From my perspective, I was very careful when I wrote the original article and (very quietly) put it on TORBWine, to ensure I did not slate or denigrate GWD, however the conclusion and comments I came to were incorrect and accused GWD of not being careful enough with their advertising. And for that, I do owe them a sincere apology, which is now freely given.

Yep…. seems they are a company you can trust…..

That article should be of interest to any wine buyer…. not just from GWD

  • i have some of the port. dont drink it but use it to make beef cheeks :) its good

    • Can you share the recipe?

  • How many bottles in a slab of Crown Lager? And how much is it generally for a slab of Crown Lager? Thanks

  • slab of crown is about $40 normally. so with 12 ports and delivered for $65 is a very good deal. nothing better than sitting in front of the fire with a port and a cigar and having a beer on the hot days. I ordered, thanks OP for the post.

On hot days, you sit in front of a fire with a port and a cigar and a beer?

      You like to party.

  • beer is saved for the hotter days and social gatherings, port and cigar for most of the winter :)

  • Cheers, grabbed it!

  • How long does port like this keep? Unopened.

    • From the sale link: "We've cellared this wine in barrel so you don't have to - enjoy now! Alternatively cellar for 10 plus years."

  • awwwww, i missed it, i love a good port on those cold winters nights …

  • Has anyone tried Penfold's Grandfather? What other ports are comparable?

    • Yes, got it as a gift once, LOVED IT, unfortunately have not found a cheapie that compares. Was going to try this but missed out!

      • im sure they will bring back a good deal on this port, it seems they have alot of stock they want to clear. it was going for $3.99 each just recently. it costs around $10 in the US and from reviews I have read they found it very enjoyable, so this is a real bargain with a free case of beer.

  • Got my delivery this morning. the bottle says it is "fine dessert wine" yet some labels I see say "old tawny port" such as here http://www.snooth.com/image/trevor-jones-jonesy-port-nv/

hopefully this really is the stuff that received a 93 score

  • Definately a wine rather than a port… not much kick. Very sweet, reminds me of those 5Lt bottles of creamed port you can pick up for $5… "meh"

  • so have we been ripped? I have not tasted it yet, will try some when I get home. I wont be impressed if they were advertising it as something great with a 93 score and they just wanted to clear their crap.

  • Drinking my third tipple now of port… very nice :)

    • you got this deal too? does your bottles say "dessert wine" or port on them?

      • says dessert wine on mine, but it tastes like port to me. I notice they're labelled for the US market so perhaps "dessert wine" is a more common term there. I would definately not call it wine!

  • Enjoying it very much. Will definitely buy it again when it comes on special like this deal.

  • yeah I have tasted it, its pretty good. Its not the same as a true tawny port but for the price cant complain. Will probably gift a few bottles to some friends to try as well.
