Really disappointed with the T7, slow once the cache is full and I also get the random disconnect issues that are widely reported on the internet which makes it useless for running software off of, which I would think is the purpose of an external ssd. T5 was a better drive.

    • RE: random disconnects, according to some, updating the firmware should fix the issue

    • I wouldn't run software off one, but I do run stuff like Lightroom Catalogues and storage of files.

      • It shouldn't be an issue running software off an external drive. Been doing it for years with Windows on a Mac using SSD enclosures. Beats having to BootCamp it

    • I remedied the long-standing problem of -all- my USB failing, dropping out, only during prolonged heavy writes (12+ hours) to one or more Samsung T5.

Scroll down for the really obvious solution that I'm not saying will be the answer for everyone - a last hope, to add, I haven't tried the risky move of an un-official update to T5's controller as some have suggested.

All of my USB interface devices (which can include the onboard Bluetooth controller among other "plug and play" things) would disconnect and reconnect. I was beginning to fear that it might be a symptom of the missing solder that fell off my ex-demo ROG MAXIMUS XII HERO (WI-FI) boxed mainboard (loose solder left with the mobo together in plastic bag, thanks PLE, and for the potential short-circuit…), leaving bearly a trace of contact with a capacitor or something.

Things I tried in order [to mitigate the USB-born problems]:

      • Tried using Samsung T5 on every other USB 3 Type A port (Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 2x2) except USB 2.0 haha, of course, even a 4 x USB A port hub connected to the Type-C port on the RTX 2070! (And I was so close to the magic bullet here, too.)

      • Tweaked numerous AHCI and USB power related settings in Windows and also BIOS.

      • Replace Microsoft's basic SATA driver with Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology) driver in its SATA mode.

      • Updated Samsung T5 firmware: Samsung Portable SSD software 1.6.10 read firmwares up to date. If AU model purchase, must use AU setup package version 1.6.7, that when installed, saw an update for itself to 1.6.9. Then and only then on 1.6.9 was there very minor firmware updates to all three of my T5. (What saw no improvement.)

      • Installed Intel Chipset drivers (which I neglected to do - it's usually just an inf file sometimes exposing more system devices or correctly identifying existing devices - first thing you're supposed to install but if everything's recognised and running great, don't install it now).

      • Updated to latest BIOS (next one after Win11 compatibility patch), purporting improved system performance, and stability, and [DRAM] compatibility.

      • Installed Intel ME (Management Engine) driver first, then updated Intel ME firmware (version number reflected in BIOS), patching a security vulnerability.

And the obvious solution is obvious all along was…

Just to use the Type-C to Type-C cables that came with the Samsung T5 SSDs… D'oh!

Perfect thing my PC has three Type-C ports including the one from the GPU - I didn't plan to use Type C for the T5 because only my new PC has it - portable drives and all. Now I'm even using these 50cm short extension cables (for the rear ports) with success as well - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09DYK8JFV

So clearly, in edge use situations, the power draw of Samsung's T5 SSDs are in excess of USB type A standard.

And now that everything's stable, I've created a 3TB pool out of my three 1TB T5 SSDs - not that I would recommend that if you value your data - only for special temporary use cases. Thankfully USB hasn't dropped since using Type C to Type C and it's been weeks of constant, random read+writes filling to the brim. I should mention that I am stressing Type A also, with SATA docks, no problem.
