I got it at around that price in a Myer sale, they shipped it to me wrapped in what was literally a taped up plastic bag. Box was damaged on delivery, not terrible but definitely not what you'd expect for a $400+ item, I ended up negotiating an additional 20% off to keep the damaged box set as they were out of stock in store. They also gave me a $50 voucher for their online store.
If I count the value of the voucher, I got the set for <$300 but obviously not something you could replicate.

Given I still have lego from over 40 years ago that still fits perfectly with today's stuff, I reckon its decent value. The precision and quality control over that amount of time seems pretty impressive to me. I'm no plastics expert though..
