What Is This Nut Called?

I am trying to chase up this nut locally, I can get it out of the US from the supplier but the per piece price is expensive(also need to factor in the delay and freight) so I'd rather buy it locally. My local fasteners shop haven't seen it before/didn't really have a idea on what it was called. They said it looked similar to a Sex Nut however mine is counter sunk and is also open on both ends for the bolt to pass through. It is a M10 thread. To me it is like a barrel nut.

Here is a screen shot from the suppliers website, they call it a "PAPILLON NUT"

  • Not a clue but a marine shop like Whitworths might just have it. They tend to stock tons of unique parts for American boats and trailers etc that you won't find at Bunnings.

    • @brendanm

    • According to suppliers description is a car part..yes?

      "Papillion Nut for M10 Bumper"

This is a customer nut made for a specific purpose.

Then the only place to get them is from BMW spare parts

  • It's not as there's a few difference but almost looks like a shear nut. I'd say if you contact a fastener specialist they should be able to help. I usually use Lee Bros Engineering in Parramatta for fasteners.

    • Thank you, gives me somewhere to start.

  • Slotted countersunk sleeve or barrel nut?

    • Thank you but that one has a Hex drive on the end which is no good, need the bolt thread to pass through.

      • Ah, fair enough. Is it not possible to use a shorter bolt, rather than have it come through? Or is that a necessary thing?

  • Deez Nutzzz

    • There's something in the mail

  • Contact these guys, they're local and they're very helpful. https://www.boltandnut.com.au/

I've used them for sourcing specific fasteners for our business. Very fast service.

    • Sent them a email, they replied pretty quick however have tried to source them before but had no luck.

Came to see deez nuts, was not disappointed.

Really thought it was going to be a pistachio.

  • Depending on your application you might be able to get these 3D printed in a dense plastic, like PETG or ABS, with 100% in-fill.

    • They are used on go karts so I wouldn’t have much hope in 3D printing. We currently use 4 prong tee nut as a replacement sometimes but they just sheer off from the impact.

  • Cone nut bumper

    • Interesting, that’s them also. Doesn’t appear to be much in Australia online for them.

Mention of nuts..and no antivaxxers here yet…

    • Rent free.

  • what is the us price per each.

you might have to get them made.

    • $3USD each. Everyone I have spoken to can't source them.

  • Fred. it's called Fred.

  • If I needed it now and noone had one, maybe screw it all together in place with some JB Weld or Devcon in it, clamp it and let it set.

  • It's part of a shear security nut. The top hex part is designed to break off when tightened. The cone part stays to hold the job in place and is very difficult to remove.

    • It isn't a sheer nut, it doesn't have a hex part in it. The thread goes straight through for a long bolt to pass through.

  • Are these holding your aftermarket headlights on your 4WD?

    • They are used on go karts

      • Not only on Go Carts, they are used in several situations, in one maintenance job I encountered them here and there and they are used as security nuts, some light fittings in one hotel I worked in to stop guests tampering with them in hotels, Urinals are held onto walls with them and some aftermarket bolt on headlights come with them, why do those need to be used, any M10 suitable strong nut can replace them?

        • M10 is just the bolt size setup. They need to be counter sunk.

      • Yes on Italian made OTL go karts in my case.
