20% off + Delivery @ Spectra Baby Australia

970

Too late for me as I just purchased our S1+ via Amazon but I just got this email announcing a 20% off sale starting next week.

"We couldn't resist…
👋 Hey !

So we don't usually have sales in March. There's a reason for this one. We need to push our prices up in April due to rising shipping, fuel and materials costs. It's the first time we've put our sales up in 10 years!

We thought we'd run a sale before prices go up so that you all have a last chance to buy at current prices AND on sale! Details:

👉 Start: Monday March 21 Midday (Sydney time)

👉 Ends: Friday March 25, 12 Midnight (Sydney time)

We would LOVE you to come join us in our Facebook event (https://fb.me/e/1woZpG7XE) and be among the first to know when the sale starts. Spectra sales are CRAZY so now's the time to ask questions & be ready to shop!"

a bit confused. Amazon showing $266. This with 20% ends up $300..?

    • +1

That one is UK stock and the Q&A says that Spectra Australia won't handle the warranty, so basically a grey import

      • Of course they do not handle the warranty. It wasn't sold by them.

Needs to go back to where you purchased it from.

  • Great device. On par with Medela IMO

  • +7

Best brand of pump. It is hospital grade and has a closed system which is very important to avoid any mould growing in the machine. Can attest to great service (having bought an Australian model). The consultants will skype or FaceTime you within 24 hours and directly help troubleshoot the issue and arrange for replacement parts if needed. Highly recommend!

  • Got this for $270 at Amazon awhile back.

    Great device

  • Great pump. Saved my sanity with my first baby, halved the time I was spending pumping compared to Medela. I got the S1 with the inbuilt battery (full price! When you need it you need it), the convenience was invaluable.

  • Perfect timing. Need to get some new accessories for our pump!

  • Any issue with buying it from Amazon AU via Amazon UK for much cheaper price? I know it is grey import, but how likely it will break down?

    • +1

We've had one for nearly 4 years now, used with 2 kids, no issues at all.
A friend got one under a year ago for their first bub and had to be sent back…it wasn't working but they were still a PITA to organize a replacement. If it broke, you'd get Amazon to refund it and then likely purchase one locally

My personal recommendation is to buy the S1+ from the Australian store.

Buying from Australian store you'll get:
    - Quick response time regarding warranty issues and local support
    - Temporary replacement when your machine is getting fixed (critical if you use the machine daily)
    - Current sale price of $303.20 for the S1+ is only $37 more than Amazon (bigger difference when it isn't on special)
    - Australian plug
    - 24mm breast shields

Buying it from Amazon (grey import via the UK):
    - You'll get it for cheaper - Amazon $266 vs Spectra Australia $379 ($303.20 with 20% discount) - up to $113 saving when comparing to Australian RRP
    - Warranty issues don't require video evidence and usually trigger an immediate refund (once the item has arrived in the UK with postage fully paid by Amazon)
    - Can be delivered for free within 2 weeks
    - UK plug (adapter required)
    - 28mm breast shields

We've used the Medela and Tommee Tippee pumps and the Spectra comes out on top. I'm amazed Medela has such a large following but suspect marketing is at play here because the Spectra was miles ahead of the Medela.

Source of information comes from having purchased an S1+ from both Amazon and the Australian stores.

They are within their rights to reject your request for a discount. Don't really see how you could be annoyed with that response.

    • +6

It’s nice you tried but the business was under no obligation to honour your request. Will you go to Coles or Woolies on Monday night (when their next catalogue is out) saying that you want Nappies on special as they will be on sale on Wednesday anyway? Seems bizarre..

If you're part of their Facebook group, there's a 10% code that's always valid I believe. It's been a year since I stopped using it but was helpful when I needed spare parts etc and couldn't wait for their sales.

  • +1

Cheers, just in time to get some new parts for my S1 for #2 :)

  • i love spectra but i have bought from ebay usa shipped to australia and it was only ~$120 brand new (bought it twice as i sold my 1st one, and then i bought another 1 four years later)

    • Link?

      • you have to do a search on ebay usa for keywords "spectra S2 new" and find trusted sellers. it took me a while to do comparisons and research

  • +3

Spectra bottles and flanges are sucky..

Better off buying maymom flanges and bottles from Amazon, made in Taiwan and also the flange sizes are more diverse…

    • +5

broadly agree. also worth to know that it is compatible with Philips Avent bottles.

  • Great pump.. but had to replace the duck bill valve with the philips variety

  • Paid $210USD for S1 plus a year ago on eBay from an international seller, have prices come down? Never seen it for cheaper than that previously.

No issues, great pump, better than the models from Medela we used.

  • +1

Pretty good deal for local. We bought ours from Amazon UK last year works better than Mandela we had. We replaced the duck bills with the maymom ones after about 6 months usage as they started falling off.

  • Thanks OP! Credit card price match added to the diary to claim back.

Been extremely happy with the pump itself. However the bottles are a bit average so we use Maymom adapters from Amazon (to fit to another brand of narrowneck bottles).

  • +2

As first timers, bub isn't due for another 8 months. I'm trying to stay ahead of the curve. Should I buy now, the AUS version, or wait till next year?
Can these things by bought 'used' or 2nd hand?

    • +1

There is so much to get…. prams, car seats, capsules, etc… it adds up and none is cheap. Youd probably do better on all if you take advantage when you can. We're first time grandparents and Im so over researching it all. Everyone cashes in on first time parents

You hire the proper hospital grade Medelas, so 2nd hand isnt exactly crazy. Id replace everything outside the pump itself though even if it claims to be sealed. Thats how the Medela is hired, you buy the kit to go with it new.

      • So take advantage when I can, gotcha. The 2nd hand market values these around the $200-$220 mark, so may as well just go brand new to not have to buy everything 'outside the pump'.

I would be very grateful if you could dm me with any links, resources, guides, bargains, etc on what you think will be good for me. :)

        TIA TUBA

Oh yeah, prices had me choking… $2k for a pram (theres no way theres 2k worth in them)… capsule, then seat, then another seat… easy over $1.5k if youre paying full retail… or compromise and get a seat with a longer range from 0-8 but again its pricey. Video monitors, monitors with pads that read breathing etc… how can I not get that? Its got me freaking out. And theres sitll the furniture, toys, spare bottles, teats, I dont remember it being this hard.

Yeah its a no brainier at this price. I think that preferring brand new is why many mothers like these. Medela Hospital grade unit is hire only. I didnt see much in the way of performance reviews on the Medela battery units over time, at least they didnt specify. At $400 retail… with batteries like a phone that cant be replaced… they used to have a AAA model but its discontinued. I did read one review, she said she liked it, but they have so many variations and not all are sealed at the bottle. Not sure how advantageous a battery portable is in reality.

Spectra have a double pump model too.. can adjust to each breasts comfort… is there a need? is it that complex? Not sure sure what a future model might offer over it.. but Im guessing not much nutrient wise.

          I will DM…

I never found this cheaper, locally. Its about $70 off on the 2 Hospital grade units. Not really sure how useful the portable units are… Ive read since using double express units will increase milk energy levels, its also long been understood to relax sitting in quiet helps too. I have no idea if the quiet and relaxed place is old thinking. Cant imagine the gym is a relaxing place (yep saw that as a reason for battery models). Busy Mums I guess. There are bras that have connections for the hoses for expressing while up and about I assume… no idea how they work. It was getting surreal. But hoses would make proper cleanup awkward. I think the same with portable… sounds good, but reality is probably less convenient.

          • @Tuba: sorry for eavesdropping. We are having baby this may. Want to buy this one, what about the bottles and milk storage bags? Do we have to buy from spectra or other generic ones are fine? I saw some discussions about 24 mm or 28 mm parts, don't know about that.

            • +1

              @Pokharabluez: Congratulations for May!

The pumps come with Spectra bottles, but they're not especially good and often leak. From memory Philips bottles are a straight fit with Spectra pumps, and with adapters you can use bottles from most other brands.

I probably wouldn't get too deep in adapter territory until bub is born. We tried a few bottle brands (both single bottle purchases and with the various sampler packs) before settling on one that worked best for our child, and only then bought adapters. This model comes as a four pack - useful and works with Dr Browns / Pigeon / NAN premix / the hospital disposable bottles / most other narrow neck brands. The third party adapter is slightly better for us than the Spectra-sold adapter. From memory Tommy Tippee wide neck bottles need two adapters, but most other brands should have an adapter.

You can use generic milk bags - either by decanting from a bottle post-pump, or by buying various straight-to-bag adapters (don't have any practical experience to share).

The 24/28mm thing is about breast shield size. The machines are compatible with multiple shield sizes (i.e you're not locked in), but one size will probably fit better than the other and might be more comfortable or efficient. They're cheap enough to replace (either Spectra branded, or third parties like Maymom on Amazon) if you need to swap them out. A midwife or lactation consultant should be able to assess fit and let you know if a change is needed.

Wait. They usually do a sale twice per year (around May and Nov if you check their facebook history) otherwise there's a 10% friends code on their facebook page that you could use at other times. I say wait because you want the warranty on the unit in case anything goes wrong and you still have a long time until needing it.

You can buy Spectra used/2nd hand as it's a closed system (i.e. the milk/water doesn't make its way into the internals of the machine which can cause mould and you wouldn't be able to see it and end up feeding baby mould would be the worst. This is the reason that I didn't purchase Medela even though it's more popular and widely available as they use an open system (i think the ones at the hospital might be the exception but their retail models are open system when i was researching this 5 years ago). I've since lent my machine out to friends as I knew it could be trusted - just ask them to buy a new kit that comes with the tubing, flanges, membrane and bottle (mine fit to avent bottles which i found 100x better than the Spectra bottles - those leaked soooo many times and if there's ever a time you cry over spilt milk, this was it).

Good luck with the new bub!

      • The hire Medela is closed… but at the unit from what Medela explained to me… but it also has a membrane at the bottle end too, but its not properly sealed there. If used incorrectly (no idea how cumbersome that requirement is) milk can get in the hoses. With the hire unit, you also need to supply your own bottles and lines etc. The more portable battery Medela units some are same, some are not closed at all.

Spectra is closed closer to the bottle end so even the hoses should not get contaminated.

  • website ozbargained?…

  • when people say "great device" "better than Medela" what does that mean exactly? Does it get more milk in a short amount of time? Is it easy to clean?

    • Over Medela, it wont pull more milk down. They both do that. Stronger milk too… same goes for double pumping, it results in stronger milk.. whodathunkit… again both do this.

Yeah its cleaner, Medela is sealed at the pump. There are also membranes nearer the breast and if used right, the Medela allegedly wont get milk in the lines either, but supposedly it can. But the Spectra cant get milk there. From what Ive read, not all Medela are made the same in this regard.

Its comfort and fit of the parts on the mother… and the battery units from Medela seem like toys to me.. I wonder if part of the love for Medela is linked to the hospital grade mains unit, not so much the battery units.

The Medela, is $30 a week, you dont buy them I phoned Medela they said you cant buy them. But there was one on Amazon, $2000, US import. There is not 2k worth of machine there.

Id suggest price (or not hired), cleanliness, and performance.. and fit have left a lot of Mums loving Spectra.

    • Medela uses an open system which means milk/water condensation can travel up the tubing and into the internals of the machine which you cannot open and see. This can result in mould and the last thing you want is to feed your baby moudly milk. That's why people prefer Spectra as all their models use a "closed" system where the moisture cannot reach the internal of the machine.

In terms of getting more milk, that's very subjective as every mother will produce different amounts at different times of the day so it's a hard one to measure. As for any pump, there are a few parts but depending on frequency of pumping, you don't always have to clean out every single part after each pump. I think Australian Breastfeeding Association or something might have some good info or advice.

  • anyone experienced getting charged but the Order was not completed and is still in the cart?

Cant even get that far… site is borked..

We got one of these and it didn’t work out. Ended up giving it to a friend who sold it…we weren’t impressed haha. Breastfeeding unfortunately doesn’t work out for everybody; if it’s your first baby see how you go, we ended up having to switch to formula very early

  • Thanks, was hoping for a sale like this!
