  • Pi-hole and never worry about ads anywhere again.

    • But sometimes i like ads, I hate when pihole block google search results ads 😒

      • +3

I purposely avoid those so that Google doesn't get paid

    • +8

Pi-Hole doesn’t block YouTube ads due to the way they are delivered coming from the same servers the videos are streamed.

Waiting for YouTube to write a copystrike / takedown request to Ozbargain for the YT Premium via India VPN deal (nervously checks my email)

    • Inevitable they'll shut down that loophole too. Netflix started clamping down on it but then seemed to have forgotten.

      • +2

I think they make it hard enough that 99% people won't bother then its diminishing returns on investment against tech nerds and stingy ppl

    • +1

I think YouTube should be paying OZB for funneling people into the service. Get them addicted to YouTube now on Indian prices, force them to pay regular prices later. Besides most of us would be using adblock anyway and just avoid the YouTube app entirely otherwise.

      • The only people that YT pays is to their content creators, as their content is what draws people to visit YouTube and consequently generate ad revenue. I'm not sure YouTube needs to pay us a cent to keep people watching when the YouTube app is already preinstalled on everyone's smartphones.

The Ozbargain demographic is also quite internet savvy and tech-savvy, and are the most likely group to be using apps like Vanced to block ads.

Going by some of the past legal threat emails that "big corp" has sent us like a certain popular anime streaming platform, they usually view Ozbargain as a threat to their revenue stream.

Wow, a sad day. I'll keep vancing till it stops, then newpipe, then maybe finally stop wasting time altogether on yt. So maybe thanks are in order to google.

Yeh, if I am forced to watch 2 ads, I would rather go outside

if you have an android, download firefox for mobile and install the ublock origin extension on it. problem solved. doesn't work for apple, unfortunately, as you are unable to install extensions on the iOS version of firefox for mobile.

    • Or just use free or paid Adblock extensions for Safari on iOS? I used to use Adblock Plus which I got for free, but now I use Wipr which is $3 but works great, I forget that YouTube even has ads most of the time. I have Wipr on my Mac as well.

      • +2

Wipr doesn't block youtube ads anymore for me anymore since mid-last year when youtube changed the way ads work.

    • +4

Or Brave browser with youtube ad blocking built in

    A sad day.

Their downfall was the devs getting into the NFT market with their logo is what I'm reading on Reddit. I'm sure they were already known to YouTube/Google before this though.

    • Yeh looks like their downfall was trying to make a profit

  • oh well…i got to enjoy it for 3 months at least. how long until it stops working altogether? weeks? months?

I don't understand the mentality of forcing ads on people. All it does for me is make me no longer want to use your service and boycott whatever company is advertising. Are these ads just for the weak minded who are easily brainwashed?

    • +6

well the mentality is that you are getting content for free, so they expect you to watch a couple of ads so that they get revenue from the companies instead of you, just like television, i hate ads as much as the next person but i understand it, its a fair trade off really, this ad revenue is also used to pay creators for their content, no ads, no revenue, no money for content creators, no content

      • If it was ads like television, I wouldn't have a problem.

My problem is with my data being bought and sold on the open market. It can be pretty disturbing how targeted they can be with their ads these days. And you don't even need to have an account with Google/Facebook/et al for them to have a profile on you.

    • +1

I think that often the point is not for you to drop what you're doing and buy the company's product/service after seeing the ad, the point is to familiarise you with the brand so that in 6 months or a year down the track when it comes time for you to choose a product/service in that category you go with their brand because it's the one you know (and because by this point you've forgotten your momentary annoyance at their YouTube ad)

or smarttubenext. android only. sorry fruit lovers. https://smartyoutubetv.github.io/

    • +2

Not great for phones but good for tvs

    • Thanks! Not sure why I put up with the shitty YouTube ads on my Android TV for so long.

  • +1

    Guess it's back to Newpipe

  • It's sad that there's only one video site

  • Don’t worry, there will be a fork of this or one of the guys will branch out and do their own version of what they want the app to be. I can see this being like XBMC that basically split into Kodi and then into Plex.

  • Not sure why u cant use adblock if youre using web?

Or download "musi" app on your phone, does the same thing?

  • Try a apk called Pure Tuber. Works good with no ads
