Another deal on the Samsung 980 Pro 2TB - Cheapest ever price from Amazon US

These are very fast M.2 NVMe Gen4 drives, a little slower than the WD SN850 but also apparently run cooler.

Should be fine for the PS5 but you will have to source your own heat sink.

  • I'd buy one but I'm out of M.2 and PCIe slots.

    • Time to get a Thunderbolt 3/4 external housing! (40Gbps isn't too bad).

  • I have a Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Elite motherboard, specs on website says: Dual Ultra-Fast M.2 with PCIe Gen3 x4 interface

Does that mean I have to get a Gen 3 m2 drive and this Gen 4 won't work?

    • +2

It will work, just at Gen 3 speeds

      • thanks, guess it'd only be good for future proofing then if I got a gen 4

I'll have to research the speed differences between the different generations

        cheers!

          Gen 3 caps out at around 3500 MB/s, Gen 4 at around 7000 MB/s.

@dogsryummy: shit that's a massive difference, damn my mobo sucks…

            • +7

@Lionheart: However, in real life usage other than transferring a huge file from a Gen4 to a Gen4, or reading a 100GB raw video file into editing software, there is very little different in loading speeds especially for games.

              • @Sleepycat3: oh thanks, I didn't know that, that's excellent information

            • +2

@Lionheart: While the difference is big on paper, you are HIGHLY unlikely to see a difference in day to day use. Normal use depends on random reads/writes not sequential, which have reached a point of diminishing returns.

Sequential speeds are only good for copying 500 GB of files and showing off in benchmarks.

@dogsryummy: yup.. but for content creators who work on large assets like photo or video, it does help shave some waiting time off the clock.

@gizmomelb: Yeah of course, but there's a thing with tech where if you have to ask whether you need it, chances are you probably don't need it.
