Mirror's Edge Catalyst is one of the most laborious games I've ever tried to play. After the first few levels any novelty seems to wear off and then just becomes a super repetitive running/leaping/sliding simulator set on constant rinse and repeat. And that's when you actually get to play - the long videos nearly bored me to death. I had bought it as a fan of the first game, but this one is a chore IMO. Each to their own.

Good to know. I was considering this, having played and enjoyed the first game.

    • I never finished the second game, but the first one was fantastic

I still enjoyed it and finished it, but agree with your points - after a while it was just running the same routes across the city to get to places. I didn't bother with the random delivery or race quests either, just seemed to be mostly pointless running against the clock, which you're doing mostly in the game anyway! I actually enjoyed the story, and the final mission (climbing to the top of the Shard) was worth all the effort for me.

    • That is so disappointing to hear! I was such a fan of the first one, and I've got the sequel sitting there on my pile of shame to play soon. But I'm not hearing many good things about this one. :/

I think most people would agree, but the first Mirror's Edge was tons better than Catalyst, in terms of gameplay and story. Gameplay in Catalyst is a lot more repetitive (result of it being open world), and the world doesn't feel as polished and as intricately designed as the first Mirror's Edge, which, again, is due to the fact that it is quite a generously sized open world. The first Mirror's Edge utilised levels, though they were quite spacious too. Agree with @Phreebee; there are lots of rinse and repeat elements in Catalyst which made it feel boring after 15hrs or so playing the game.

Completed the first game 4-5 times, finding it hard to finish Catalyst. In saying all that, the graphics are beautiful and the combat isn't terrible. If you haven't played it yet, you might enjoy it as much if not more than the first, due to the more open approach to the game.

I actually think the open world is a detractor for me - I like the story to be clear, and side missions can still be available but optional. I also find spending most game time travelling between places to be annoying after a while, and takes you out of the story unnecessarily.

I'm seeing some negative reviews of MEC so ill chime in with the opposite view:

As a huge fan of the first game, I enjoyed MEC almost as much, if not more. But at $3 does it even matter? Try it and make up your own mind.

Same. Mirrors Edge Catalyst is one of my favourite games of the last generation, but it's not one of the 'best'. Worth $3 absolutely.

    • I think it's worth playing if you enjoyed the first game, it has some great missions and similar gameplay. If you take nodes so you don't have to run to every location, that helps as well.

  • Thoughts on Mass Effect: Andromeda? I have never played any games in the series. I liked SW:KOTOR if it is anything like that?

    • I've only played ME 1 and 2 but yes it somewhat reminds me of the KOTOR (which I only played #1 not #2)

Looking forward to playing the newer SW games too though - they're on my pile of shame.

I loved Mirrors Edge catalyst, very interesting story, likeable characters. Yes its open world and combat is a bit blegh after a while, but it is still a lot of fun and a very unique game.

Some of the best parts is climbing to the top of buildings and just looking out at the city. The story and music is great too.

The first Mirror's Edge was literally life-changing for me, inspired me to get more active and I actuially started parkour classes. I was unbelievably hyped for Catalyst, and while the visuals and gameplay feel great, the characters and story were dull and lacked that stylish feel of the first game. I actually preferred the comic-style cutscenes in the first game over the more generic ones in Catalyst. Another great soundtrack from Solar Fields though! Definitely worth checking out for a couple of dollars, even if you don't play it all the way through - the series is so unique and you won't find any other games quite like it.
