US$299 (~A$415) Refund & 40% off Discount Code @ Fitbit Ionic Product Recall

800

Saw this recall notice and thought it could be a deal for people who own a Fitbit Ionic. Basically you get a full refund for your used smartwatch plus a 40% off discount code, for use in the official Fitbit Ionic Discount Store. I don't own a Fitbit Ionic so cannot provide more details about the process.

What are the defects?
The lithium-ion battery in the Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch can overheat.

What are the hazards?
If the battery overheats while a user is wearing the device, it can pose a burn hazard.

What should consumers do?
Consumers should stop using their Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch and visit https://help.fitbit.com/ionic for information on how to obtain a refund and to receive a discount code for 40% off certain products from the Fitbit store.

  • Re: the discount store.
Was going to get the Sense. Only colour options available at this point is lunar white/soft gold or sage grey/silver and even these are on back order. No Carbon/Graphite option which is my desired choice.
No sport band accessories available in Carbon/Graphite either.

    • I ordered my Sense last week, the unit and the bands etc were all available to put in my cart but were slated as as back order until April.. but still available to back order.

I ordered 2 x Charge 5 units as well, both of those arrived yesterday.

      • Thats great. Wish I had been quicker. Carbon/Graphite option there when i first looked. Does not come up at all now. Same with sport band

  • +1

I wonder if you will cop a 4% fee for choosing Paypal, or they factor that in to the refund… kind of regret choosing PP now.. i feel like a visacard snailmail will take for ever though.

  • So many reviews saying they got 3,4 replacement but still getting issue with fitbit, but there are many that still buying this brand… weird..

    • Fitbit’s software is great…most intuitive that I’ve experienced in a fitness device.
Their hardware though, pre-Google takeover, was iffy.

I bought 3 fitbits, plus 2 replacements along the way.

Then decided to get an Apple Watch, which I think is great except for the fitness software. Maybe I just haven’t read the Apple info enough but I wish they’d just show me steps and flights climbed like Fitbit does, instead of those stupid rings. Sleep tracking also not as well tuned or presented.

  • If I own one of these but have never taken it out of the box and don't have the receipt, would I be able to claim the refund?

    • +1

You would likely have to register it to an account first maybe worth checking with them.

    • That would be a question for Fitbit. I would think that if the unit had not be synced/setup to your Fitbit account before the recall started then it might be a no, but it would be interesting to see what happens!

    • No receipt is needed.
But they do want the email address you have synced your watch to.
So maybe you should do that now first.
      Then try for the refund.

  • people still buy these garbage fitbit? Get the real stuff, get Garmin. I went from the fitbit to garmin fenix, and it was a huge difference.
i guess everyone buys a fitbit 1st to try and see if they really want a fitness watch. Then when they figure out they do want one, proceed to sell the fitbit and buy a garmin.

    • What Garmin do you recommend.

I have a Fitbit sense and versa 3

    • So you are another fanboy. Fitbit has better sleep tracking system, that might be important to some.

      • i owned the top of the line for both brands so i have experience. I am speaking on my experience. makes me a fanboy that i choice the better option? what kind of psychopath are you that you would choose the inferior one out of the 2? MOST people buy a fitness tracker to track fitness. there steps, total distance, heart rate, different modes of activity.
if you are a fanboy for fitbit because it has a better sleep tracker, go for it. its funny that the inactivity of sleep is what they are "good" at, lol.
it fits the mold of inactive people that buy fitbits, lol. you can tell the more serious athletes with gamins vs people that might workout once a year and quit when they barely break a sweat, lol.
go to any marathon, triathlon, etc… everyone has a garmin. garmin is expensive though, so if you aren't serious you buy fitbit so it gives people an impression you are active.

        • +4

Jeez you seem like a nut job. I don't use any smart / fitness watch, I'm just pointing out you are an obvious fanboy but also seem very odd by calling people psychopaths for preferring things you don't and just laughing out loud who you perceive who buys it.

      • if you're just after the sleep system, then just go with the cheapest fitbit as they all have the same functionalities as the more expensive ones.

    • Instinct is great. It's tough, with physical buttons, great battery life -up to 2 weeks or 2 full days with GPS running.

  • Filled out the form for refund, but haven't heard back for 10 days now.
    Has anyone received their refund?

    • +3

They said can take up to 3 weeks there is now a dedicated hotline

      1800 960 851

      • Can also try: 1300 998 704

    • Mine was disabled on the day of filling out the forms but the emails I received said the refund would take 3-4 weeks. You can use the code you got in the email to order the new fitbit right away though.

      • What happens to the watch face that let you notice it was disabled? did it disable heart rate or just not sync to your mobile anymore?

        • +1

It just doesn't sync to mobile anymore, mine is still working after a week fine. Just remember to keep charging it other wise the time will be different. bare in mind when daylight savings changes the time will be different as you wont be able to sync.

  • Yep put in a claim a couple weeks ago, no refund yet but ordered some discounted watches and they came last week. Haven't used the watch in a while but still had it connected to my account, pretty happy with a full refund that's for sure!

    • what do you mean some discounted watches? Did you file a claim for more than one Ionic?

      • From the email I received:
Thanks for verifying your eligibility for your discount. To keep you as part of the Fitbit family, we’re offering you the following:
        • 40% off up to 5 Fitbit devices–that’s 1 for you and 1 for up to 4 friends! Check the store to see which devices are available for purchase.
        • Up to 5 free accessory bands–1 for each device you order
        • 1 Fitbit Premium subscription for a full year (new members only)
        • Free expedited shipping (where available)

        • Does it stack with any sales

          • @AussieMark: It uses a special storefront, so I don't believe so no. But there wasn't any sales when I bought anyway

        • From further reading in device deactivation says, if you have more than one device please wait for more than 30 minutes before making a new claim.

      • One ionic device gives you only one refund but You can purchase up to 5 devices at 40% discount through the process they email

        • Further reading in device deactivation says, if you have more than one device please wait for more than 30 minutes before making a new claim.

  • Im eligible for this. Cheers.

  • Has anyone received the refund (those who claimed 2 - 3 weeks ago). How much was it?

    • It's $299 USD so $400 aud

  • I bought one of these when it came out but no longer have it after it broke.

I still have the receipt though. Is there a way to lodge a claim by relying on the receipt?

    • If its still linked to your fitbit account, you can. Or if you can prove you still own it somehow, providing them the serial number may be. Just ask them.

      • Thanks

  • +1

Anyone buying Sense or Versa, make sure you buy screen protector. Its extremely fragile and in some cases, can just fall off due to weak glue, in others can easily get damaged due to raised design. Read posts on their support forums. I have one Sense sitting in the drawer after a few weeks of use. NOT covered by warranty as its user fault to damage the screen. Replacement screen have started to show up on Ali express for around $100. Fitbit does not offer repair.

  • What exact details do they ask to give the money back? do I just give my bank details, Fitbit account and that's it? If I just pair a Fitbit ionic now would I still be eligible?

  • How are people going to receive their refunds? I filled out a form and chose Visa/MC, but there wasn't a drop down for bank details? Do they request that later?

    • Dont believe that is an option. Refund to your Paypal account or receive a Debit Card.
Not sure if they offer Bank Deposit if you call the hotline

      • Oh receive a debit card, okay that makes a lot more sense. I thought it would be a direct refund via bank.

  • When I click on the verification email I get a 404 page, anyone else having the same issue?

    • From memory it takes an hour or so after you first fill out the form before you can verify

      • Thanks mate but I did it yesterday and I still keep getting a page not found

  • Thanks so much for posting. Could have missed this otherwise.

  • I went through the refund process, didn't see anything about a 40% discount anywhere in the process.

Mine was a replacement as my original ionic had the issue where it got really hot. Was wearing it at the time and it was a slow increasing getting hot. Got to around 60c. This was around 2 years ago. Took them a long time to decide to recall.

    • You'll get an email about the discount within 48 hours or so

  • have registered for refund almost 2 weeks ago. my ioniq was disconnected from my fitbit account a couple of days after.
yet still not getting the discount code as some of you do. online chatted with fitbit support but they just say you will receive it without any timeline, and even end the chat when i am asking when shall i expect to receive the code!

by the way, i have a replacement ioniq a year ago.. the battery was drained from full charge in a day after a firmware update! they sent me a replacement (without band) after contacting with the support.

    • Same, I'm coming up to three weeks and still no discount code/link. Fitbit support keep telling me to wait (but do absolutely nothing about it).

  • Submitted claim through this but also got an email from JB hi-fi as I bought it off them. Does anyone know if I need to claim it again with them or is the one through Fitbit enough?

    • Claim through Fitbit is all you need to do

    • Try both, I once got a refund from JB and also a replacement from Fitbit directly. Both for the same watch. I guess they didn't communicate between themselves very well lol.

  • If anyone has a discount code they are willing to share that would be much appreciated!!

  • Does anyone have trouble with adding more bands to the cart? One was the limit but I have 5 Fitbits for the bands? What's the go?
Oh it says Fitbit reserves the right to change the ts and cs. ok.

  • Did anyone actually receive their refund?

    • +3

Received the refund today US$309 (Paypal Conversion AU$398.73).

      • Congrats, how long it took?

        • +2

          25 Days

      • Also got mine yesterday via Paypal. Registered on March 4 so 27 days

  • Yet to receive my Visa Debit. I got an email a few days ago for a Virtual Debit Card but everytime I clicked on it, it went to "Your Gift card is on its way. Wait 24 hours". This is already nearly a week.

    • Got it today. $406.67

      • @Blackfox got AUD 398. Exchange playing up or PayPal charging any fee??

        • Paypal exchange rate was lower than the actual exchange rate.

  • Got my refund. Same issue as others.. had to wait a few days and reclick the same link to get a virt visa card.

  • I received my refund as a virtual debit card to the value of $402 AUD.

Although I did elect for a bank transfer. Ah well still $400 I didn't have.

I guess now I can just transfer the entire amount to my PayPal and then deposit to my bank account anyway.

    • how do you transfer the VISA amount?

  • 27 days passed, still nothing

    • Received today!! 309 USD converted 401 aud

  • Nothing has hit my paypal yet… Might have to follow up with them

  • Does anyone know how to check the balance on the Virtual Visa Cards?

  • I applied on 5Mar and now almost 2 months I have received nothing on both the discount code and refund!!! Contacted fitbit a couple of times via email and phone and no help!!!

    • I got my claims paid in about a month.

    • I applied on 4 march, still waiting for the virtual gift card..

      • +1

I've made a few calls to them and I finally got the discount code after telling them my next call is going to consumer council…….

        • Did you receive the gift card?

          • @WHYSOFOMO: Not yet

            • @mspaint: Every time I called them, they told me they would escalate the case. And they did nothing. This is a joke! We have to seek help from ACCC. Bro

              • @WHYSOFOMO: Exactly what I've got from every call. I asked to speak to the manager in my last call. they always unclear about what I am asking.. they just thought I was asking for the gift card but I needa tell them I missed both discount code and gift cards every time….

                • @mspaint: Gees! After 12 weeks, FINALLY heard back from sedgwick regarding the bloody gift card they promised today. It says it will take 24 hours to show the details. I will keep you guys updated.

                • @mspaint: hey mate, my virtual gift card has been activated for $416.69. Good luck mate for yours. it just takes time.

              • @WHYSOFOMO: I was told they tried to pay me through PayPal but failed. But I’ve used my PayPal for years! PayPal said my account was perceptual fine. Don’t know why. And still waiting.

                • @echocs: I think they were lying to you. You should ask them to escalate your case.

                • @echocs: @echocs I have the same problem. Was told the payment was declined due to my paypal account not allowing international payments. I called paypal who said my account has no issues and they can't see a declined payment. Called the fitbit line again and was told my case will be escalated but it will take about a month to see if the result is any different. Did you have any luck?

  • My Fitbit FB503 is not turning on. So I am unable to connect it with my account.
I couldn't find anything online for that. Has anyone had the same issue?

  • I applied back in April and have had to wait a few months for Fitbit to finally get back to me - I had already thrown away the watch because it was heating up and had a non-responsive screen. Fitbit are refusing to provide a refund, saying that they're wanting me to provide a picture with the Ionic + my reference number, and that to be eligible, you must have the Ionic device in your possession.

If anyone has been in a similar position - please let me know if you were successful with a claim in the end.

    • +1

If you've thrown out away you should still have it on your fitbit account

  • Applied successfully but according to the customer service they tried to refund me through PayPal and failed ……. I’ve contacted them tons of times but still waiting for my refund. Anyone has the same problem? My PayPal customer service said my account was perfectly fine.

  • +1

dont give up guys i called both fitbit and Ionic Recall line every day for 3 months

    I was finally successful

  • By the time I received my refund, my store code had expired. Wondering if anyone has a valid voucher that they are not intending to use? It would be much appreciated

  • Does anyone know at what part of the process you choose what debit card to get refunded to??
