Will Ryzen 9 5950x go under $800?

Does anyone think that the 5950x will have further discounts to get it under $800?

Or do I buy now with the 10% off deals on ebay, which take it to about $810?

Price will definitely drop when the 7000 series is released. If you need it sooner then I don't know.

  • It will eventually.

    How long can you wait?

  • I am in no hurry.

tech always has a curve, at some point that lowest price will turn and it will become expensive again.

I just want to catch the wave :)

    • It'll become expensive again when it's an antique in 50 years.

No way it'll go up in price from now, not when it's slower than the 12900K and next gen is just around the corner. It might wobble around that $800 point for a bit but it won't see any significant increase.

What do you even need that many cores for? You were talking about building a 5950x rig last year, it's the kind of chip you buy because it can save you significant amounts of time having that much CPU power.

      • From that last post I did buy the Coolermaster case. I put everything in it with current parts, I have a 3600 in it right now.

I have some development VM's running off it. Depending on which environment I am working on, I will turn the VM's on or off. (copy of production, copy of test, copy of the software in its OOTB state. I then have a small duplicate of the work environment with a DC and a couple of clients. DC is on main workstation and client VM's run on an old optiplex (KVM))

Just to save me the hassle of jumping backwards and forwards when I need the compute power.

        • Makes sense! IMO the next potential drop will be when the 5800x3d comes out, anyone not actually using the cores will gravitate to that as it's better for gaming than the 5900x/5950x.

Rumours on Ryzen 7000 have it anywhere from July to October release and likely the first chips out will be the 16 core and 8 core ones (especially since they just released a pile of new 4 and 6 core ones) so definitely a price drop then.

@freefall101: Yep, I need cores, not single-threaded performance.

I am invested in AM4, that is why buying the 5950x will keep that workstation going for years.

I do also have enough parts to put that 3600 into another workstation and retire that optiplex 9010 VM host. The i7 3770 in it is showing its age.

I can then sit back and watch Zen4 and Zen5 and 13th series intel and not feel the need to jump platforms.

    • With gift cards?

      • Afterpay.

        • Can you use the afterpay code without using afterpay?

  • Or do I buy now with the 10% off deals on ebay, which take it to about $810?

Nobody has a crystal ball - with tech, you're always better off buying for what you feel is a reasonable price and actually enjoy using the thing. What's the point in continuing to wait?

  • April update: Yes.

I'm seeing deals with Scorptec, PCCaseGear and CentreCom for $799 recently.

Scorptec, for example has any order over $200 with free delivery. PCCaseGear is +$15.00 eParcel. CentreCom is free delivery for over-$79 online orders.
