Neighbour Keeps Letting Their Dog Crap Everywhere and Lets Them Run off-Leash

I’m writing to the council right now to hopefully get her to stop.

I wrote a friendly letter asking them to please stop, and returned the poop back to them. But across myself and 2 other neighbours, this is about the 4th or 5th time this has happened.

Has anyone successfully kept dogs from doing this?

Also - my kids are a little scared to play out the front now because as you can see from the below videos, she just lets them run off-leash.

Wondering, can anyone identify the breed?

Has this scenario happened to you? What did you do?

Videos

EDIT:

Got a very good look at them tonight. They were again running up and down the street and they came up to me. Unfortunately, didn’t have my phone on me so couldn’t take a photo. They look like American Pit Bull Terriers to me. Fully grown. They weren’t aggressive, but more inquisitive but it was quite intimidating as they look like very powerful, solid dogs that could tear me to shreds.

Report to council after failed civil chat is the correct process. If you want to be petty, there are dog repellant devices you can employ. Either as sprays or ultrasonic gadgets.

    • +2

      ultrasonic gadgets

Do NOT work on most dogs.
      https://www.dogster.com/lifestyle/ultrasound-dog-deterrents-…

Although if you are aware of any devices that do seem to work on most dogs, please let us know.
I bought one from Amazon (reasonable ratings), and did not do squat.

Sticking with sprays. They are pain as you have to reapply every time it rains.

      • The ultrasonic devices work for me. I think you just need a lot of them? I got 3 usb rechargable ones off aliexpress and a 9v hand held one off amazon.com.au

The rechargables ones beep every time the neighbors dog barks, the handheld one I wedge into the corner of a window or hold it with the button down.

Sometimes it works really well but I think the dog is actually going deaf or something.

  • To identify the breed you need to get a closer shot of one of the dogs. They could be one of the dogs that councils don't like being off leash, so in the letter say that you do not know what breed they are but they are small and muscly like a bull terrior body with a different face. This should get the council interested.

    • I think the procedure is usually you report to council, fill out a diary with the behavior, the council then tries to collect evidence and takes them to court eventually.

        EVENTUALLY is the key word

  • +4

That's some fine lawn you have there. Shame the the dog owner is letting it get messed up. You've already tried addressing it with the owner so I agree with the top two posters, report to council.

    • +1

      Thanks :)

It has taken me nearly 2 years to get it sorted.

    • +10

All dogs look harmless until the first time they bite someone. We have no idea if they have a history of biting either.

    • +8

That's a terrible attitude and sure way to get someone really hurt or dead.

        • +1

          ooohh lame…

          • -7

@subywagon: Not really. How often have you bitten by a dog in your life, on your property?

            • +8

@EightImmortals: I've been bitten twice. Once as a kid in my yard and a second time a couple of years ago when the off leash dog busted through my fence.

Just a few months back a dog was lose at night and came at me as I was getting into my car and scratched all the way down the door. The same dog a few weeks later was chasing down the postman. That dog is now gone luckily. I've seen multiple dog attacks, dog on dog.

It's idiots with your attitude that end up getting people hurt and kids killed.

And it's mostly Karen's that think they are entitled enough to have their dogs of lead or let them wander.

              • -7

@subywagon: Actually it's idiots that keep aggressive animals that get people attacked and killed. But hey, if you need anyone else to blame I'll be here all week.

              • +5

@subywagon: Me too, bitten by my grandmother's dog unprovoked (I was just playing with some toys on the floor in the same room) when I was about 3. Ripped the side of my face open and I still have a long scar along the edge of my jaw. Just another dog that "would never hurt a fly" until the day that it did.

                • +3

@Quantumcat: Apparently your grandmother is an idiot for keeping aggressive animals…
When I reported the neighbour whose dog bit me to the real estate agent who was leasing the property (and turned out to be their friend) said they find it hard to believe as they've been around to the property many times and the dog was harmless, "would never hurt a fly" they said as well. His tune changed when I showed him the video of the dog smashing aggressively through the fence desperate to attack me, completely unprovoked.

    • Then why do they bark like mad when you walk past her place?

    • So, what breed is it?

At least this person wasn’t that gutless and actually wrote them a letter before going to council.

How about actually talking to these people to see if they are reasonable?

      • +2

How about actually talking to these people to see if they are reasonable?

Because they seldom are. They are letting their dog loose to shit on other people’s yards. I highly doubt they will be receptive to requests to stop their dog from shitting where it shouldn’t. (Usually followed up with “mate, it’s just a dog, I can’t control where it stops to shit.”)

It would be like asking them to get their children to not do something. People are very one-eyed and defensive of their pets.

        • -8

sounds like you've had a lot of -ve experience…which would suggest you look at yourself and your approach. " People are very one-eyed and defensive of their pets." , nothing like a bit of generalization…

I'm sick of this sort of cop out response.

You really think someone who let's their dog do this is a reasonable person? No, they aren't. You'll likely get into a fight with them at worst or at best get screamed at.

        • And you might even get the result you’re after. Not even attempting to mediate the problem is the ultimate cop out.

          • +1

@Tee Rex Arms: There is no hope talking to her. She is utter scum.

She is again letting her dogs do whatever even after seeing my note.

          • +1

@Tee Rex Arms: You can infer a lot from non verbal communication. You don't have to talk to someone to know how they are likely to react, and make it not worth your time and risk.

But sure, go ahead and attempt to "MeDiAtE" the problem. Literally zero chance that someone who does this is going to turn around and go "you know what, you're right, i'm sorry". Zero.

    • Bit like that ay'

"Omegerd some dog owners don't pick up their dog's poo"

"Yes, some peeps are dorks, now you know"

  • +7

Absolutely disgusting letting her dogs shit anywhere and not cleaning it up. If it was me I'd be posting it through her letterbox

  • +5

(profanity) hate when neighbours do this. This was one of the reasons I got a security camera in my front yard because some shithead was letting their dog crap on my lawn.

Eventually found out who it was, and delivered some bags of shit on their doorstep

  • +13

Go shit on their doorstep after a big curry, repeatedly.
Did this after neighbour was talked to many times, even got drunk friends around to shit on his doorstep hehehe
    Never happened again.

    • +1

      that is brutal

    • +1

You’re lucky they didn’t have cameras or your photos would be plastered all over Daily Mail whilst bearing down.

    • That is absolutely feral, and beyond disgusting.

  • +4

Warn your neighbour that you are using snail bait on your garden, that it is known to be toxic if ingested by dogs and you won't be liable if her wandering dogs enter your property.

    • I use "Multicrop Multiguard Snail And Slug Killer" and it is not toxic to dogs or lizards.

      • Neighbour doesn't need to know that.

        • I had dead skinks and lizards until I changed.

  • +1

I'll come over and piss on them for you.

  • +11

The pooping probably bothers me less than the fact that the dogs are roaming around unchecked.

Having small kids, one of which is very wary of unfamiliar dogs due to some past trauma I would definitely see this as an issue.

I was riding my bike many years ago when a 'very friendly dog' who 'loved to sit out the front and socialise with people' ran up to me without making a noise and latched onto my calf. No matter how many times they can say it is out of character I was happy it was me and not a child in the same circumstance.

  • +2

Treat them like "freedom" cats, trap them and give to council. Ask council if they have a free cage.

  • +2

    Slingshot solve your problem

  • Wow 2 years…what a terrible neighbour…you're probably going to have ongoing issues with those people. Maybe could think about moving to a 'better' area?

    • +1

2 years getting the front yard nice is how I read that comment.

      • Oh…possibly, hopefully that's the case!

      • +3

Yep, that's what I meant. 2 years to get the lawn fixed

  • +1

I totally feel for you, OP.

I am currently dealing with a new tenant who have moved into the property next door, and have their dog off leash all the time.
Randomly going into other people's property, and barking non-stop at night. The sound of anyone walking past will set the dog off.

Going through our local council to deal with the issue as the owners seem to be quite irresponsible.

    • +2

I really sounds like you live in my street, lol

The dogs also bark late at night

    • +3

If it goes into your property, catch it, and take it to the pound. They'll have to pay to release it, and extra if not registered and even more extra if not desexed. That might make them pay more attention to their fencing.

  • That actually looks like the owner has trained them to run to your nature strip to poop. You could try some sort of dog deterrent (just not one that would harm the dog), but council is pretty much the only option.

    • +4

So, you’re happy to just have a neighbour’s dog come over and cover your private property in dog shit? Or are you the type that lets their arsehole dog shit on other peoples lawns? Delightful neighbour you would be either way.

  • +1

Yep write to your Council, and keep complaining until they do something and it stops, barking, crapping and off lead. The council should have a notification, then written warning, then court summons process for the dog owner. Council may ask you to keep a log off what’s happening. You will also probably get a small break after the council first contacts the neighbour and trust me the neighbour will just go progressively back to the same behaviour, they can’t help themselves, soon as it does go straight back to the council. Nip it in the butt.

  • I had the same experience too with my neighbor who let his dog roamed around giving us its poos here and there. The neighbour ignored our complaints. I just returned all its poos to that shit neighbour‘s driveway who just ignored my action. It even went into our lawn to offload its poo.Someone suggested to return its poos to neighbour’s letter box but I didn’t do it due to civil minded. After few years God took it away as it died from cancer.By the way I did use all sorts of repellent aids but they were immune to this particular stray dog.

    • +1

better would have been to leave their dogs poo on the owners door knob or car handle

    • Poo jogger party?

  • +1

Catch the dog. Take it to a shelter. They'll have to pay a release.

Every time it poos on your yard throw it at the neighbours windows.

    Fight fire with fire.

Generally people who let their dogs do this are not nice people. "Talking"to them does not work. They're dogs themselves.

    • Put the poop in a paper bag, place the bag of poop on the neighbours doorstep, and then light the bag on fire as you ring the doorbell and run away. Then you watch them stomp out the fire. xD

  • +2

and returned the poop back to them.

How could this possibly go wrong?

Seriously though, I feel sorry for you OP. I normally shrug off dog pooping, but they are crossing the road to use your nature strip as a toilet.

  • The only effective solution I could offer involves negative outcomes for the dog, rather than the owner. Unfortunately the law focuses on the person who fixes the problem and not the person who causes the problem. You are stuck unless we get a justice system to replace the ineffective legal system currently in place.
Council won't or can't fix it. Toothless tigers.
Be it illegal parking, dogs off leashes, dogs crapping - they have no skin in the game.

  • Hello suburbia !
    Hell on earth.

OP, thought about putting a fence?
If not those dogs in particular, anything else could present a danger for your children wishing to play in an open front-yard.

Life is cruel but fences exist for a reason. Far far away isolated acreage is the answer to avoid fences.

    • Yeah we're probably going to get some hedges, not as good as a fence.. but prettier

      • +1

not as good as a fence.. but prettier

Get a full "wire" fence and plant climbing hedges/plants along.
With care, they will cover the "wires" in less than 12 months.

        100% safety, 101% pretty. :-)

  • +2

Print an A4 size colour photo of the dog squating on your lawn, then stick it to your tree. Maybe they will feel some shame.

  • +1

Leave some chocolate on the ground. Or collect the Pooh, put it in a paper bag, leave on the front door, set it alight, ring the doorbell and bolt back to your house. F, ‘‘em I say, sick and tired of people doing this shit. No pun intended with their dogs.

    • Are you honestly suggesting that OP should poison their neighbour's dogs on purpose?

  • +1

    An update:

One of the dogs is loose as I type. It charged at my neighbour and the council animal management team is looking for it.

They’re Staffordshire Terriers, and “not friendly dogs” (this particular dog, not the breed), according to the dog catcher.
