  • That's an absolute ripper deal, well done! That's the new 'U' module offering better functionality (incl. changing date display to DD-MM (instead of the American MM-DD) and other tweaks?

Edit: My bad. Confusingly, despite the name, it seems like the 'U' module is the 3459, so these watches at Costco are a new model, but not a new module. Still a great buy though!

See here for 'U' module changes.

    • +1

Agree the U is really confusing. Wish there were more models of the square. But if anyone is looking for a basic, reasonably new model square this is a good deal. Not sure about stock availability on other Costco though as I couldn’t find anything on Costco online.

Sadly, there are very, very few Casio watches (both current and past) with the ability to display different date formats other than the American MM-DD (funnily enough, the Japanese also use the YYYY-MM-DD format too, hence why Casio probably see nothing wrong with it).

The GMW-B5000, WV-200DE, DW-8800, G-2200, G-7800 are some of those models. Weirdly enough, this feature is absent on virtually all of the higher-end, Casios & G-Shocks and seems to be only available on cheaper, sub-$200 dollar watches, which is baffling to say the least. Casio have shown this feature is trivial and cheap to implement and yet only a random assortment of their more pedestrian models have it.

If you want to compile an exhaustive list of Casio watches with this feature, the WatchUSeek forums have covered this topic quite a few times.

There's a (partial?) list in the article I linked. The U module adds this feature, along with others (also listed in the linked article), and it seems like many legacy modules are progressively getting updated with U versions over time. This is well after discussions on WUS from ~2008 or so.

Not really. It's just talking about the 6 new GW-5600 variants. If you want a Casio watch outside of a GW-5600/G-Shock square that has the ability to show the DD-MM date format, that is very hard to pin down and is actually becoming less and less common if anything (other than these GW-5600 refresh models you've linked and the GMW-B5000 I mentioned, I can't find any other recent releases that have this feature).

Again, other than in the G-Shock square/5600 range, I haven't seen this 'U' designation on other notable Casios (G-Shocks or otherwise) nor any mention of Casio refreshing any other classic model lines with the ability to display a DD-MM date format.

This topic comes up on WatchUSeek constantly, here's a thread from last year.

And the reason it comes up constantly is because A) it's a baffling omission by Casio and B) it's damned hard to figure out which Casios have/had this feature.

  • "expired" according to the title, anyway, got one at Lidcome Costco over the weekend, not sure if the deal is still going or not.
